I want to know the same. Its just a cheap small reliable car. They are considered decent cars here in some parts of europe..I guess the JDM boy racers are still mad Mitsubishi is actually building cars which make them money. Im sure people would cream their khakies if had a Toyota badge and would be called “Corolla” or “Starlet”

Those scooter wheels make the car look like it would get stuck in a pothole.

Its funny because it gets hated by the same weebs that would import some 30 year old “jayydeeamm” Daihatsu for 15k because they like small japanese cars.

i drove one as a rental.
My brain cant figure out how a car that barely has wheels can be that loud inside.

Hated by people who don’t drive them. I’m one haha but my friend bought hers new and it fits her needs quite well. Even got the manual transmission.

I just read this in Jerry Seinfeld’s voice.

My problem is that Mitsubishi Mirage has 78 hp. I am surprised that a modern car has 78 hp.

Mainly the problem is the ride quality, it’s pretty bad, if they softened the suspension a tad and gave it higher profile tires, it would be great

Yes, go drive one. It is the worst car presently on the market and it isn’t close. A Nissan Versa is a much better car and that is saying something.

It’s a modern day Toyota Tercel that’s built… fine. It knows exactly what it is, one of the cheapest cars you can buy new with little frills. Little frills = less stuff to go wrong. Small wheels and small engine means that maintenance should be fairly cheap as well.

Remember the PT cruiser episode? It’s like that

These were on my list twice in the last decade when I needed a little manual cheap reliable car. I got something else both times. On one hand, the Car & Drive magazine crowd will always snark about and dislike econoboxes. Its simplicity likely adds to its reliability and cheapness at the same time. It’s one of the last motors to not be direct injection, and I’ve heard mixed reviews about that whole direct injection thing being problematic as the car ages. They depreciate like a stone which is good for someone like me looking at 5 year old candidates on Craigslist. The US public should want more economical cars and fewer big SUV’s with stupid options and a 7 year $0 down loan.

OTOH, I could not get past it just not being a little better. 1.2 liters and 80 hp is fine, but it could be smoother with 4 cylinders (like 1997 Ford Aspires that were half Ford half Kia and half Mazda). They could paint the underside of the hood and trunk properly. Plastic switches and dash board components could be better than the plastic from VHS tapes. I drove rental Mitsubishi Mirages in the late 1990s that were just nicer than these, sort of Civic knockoffs that made more of an effort. The tires are of a size that no one makes for the US market. You will never get good, quiet Michelins; it will be some off-brand that is loud and worse and from Wal-Mart if you even keep the car longer than its tires’ lives. Meh.

They get an undeserved amount of hate. Was it a fun car to drive? No. Was it comfortable? No. Was it cool? No. But, they are dirt cheap new, pretty reliable, and have a solid warranty. If you just need a car to do car things, and you don’t care about anything exept it doing said car things, they’re great.

The reason people hate on them is because they want more out of a car but aren’t intellegent enough to realize not everyone does. It’s a braindead response to them not liking them.

It’s the definition of “an car” hated by anyone who thinks everything from Japan has to be a SOOPRAH. If you’re looking for 4 wheels, an engine and something that can go 100k miles new and cheap, this is the car.

It’s cheap, not cheerful, but it’s fine like that. Not everyone cares what they drive. It fills is roll perfectly and that’s why it’s hated

Small, underpowered, poorly built. What’s not to hate?
