Cars

1978 Sungri Paektusan, strange and obscure North Korean car that very little is known about.

This has to be perhaps one of the most mysterious cars, it’s existence is only confirmed by several North Korean movies where few examples are seen, meaning more than one were produced.

it bares a similarity to the Soviet Gaz Volga 24, which has lead to some people to believe that’s what it’s based on. Nothing is known about engine specifications, but if it is actually based on the Volga, 110 hp is a possible output.

No modern day documentation such as photos exist of this car, so it’s unknown what it’s fate is.

The design seems to be late 60s.
To be honest, I like the styling, maybe a bit outdated for the late 70s, but still a nice looking car.

The construction quality appears to be top notch. Look at the panel gaps, and how the bumpers are lined up. Lexus should study them.

  2. The similarity to the Gaz 24 is only superficial. The GAZ has wider C pillars and a rounder roof above it, not like the pics here with a slight edge. The Windshield of the Gaz doesn’t go as far up into the roof, the doors and doorframes are rather different. It might be based on its chassis, but there is too much difference in the body – amd the GAZ is a unibody.

But a very interesting (and mysterious) car indeed

I’ve met a few people who have been there. It’s incredibly destitute and underdeveloped.

Once I saw a film about North Korean defectors in which a military officer talked about being able to escape by sea – because the naval ships had no fuel to chase him.  And this is a country that is always spending heavily on its military, while its ordinary people are hungry.

I’m guessing about 4 of these were built. And never left the capital.

It looks like a Fiat 124 Special facelifted to look like an Opel Rekord C. Probably based on some Lada that’s in turn based on a 124
