I think if theres something americans are good at its making V8 engines. any. If i want an economical 3 cylinder or 4 banger -> i choose the japanese. If i want a refined V6 -> i choose the japanese probably again. If i want strong V8 -> theres only the flag with the stars and stripes imo

SBC was *the* engine for 50 years then they replaced it with the LS which became *the* engine.

AMC made the best V8’s. They had incorporated many lessons learned from the BBC motors and were fairly bulletproof. An AMC 360 with aluminum heads is a monster

you’d better specify what BEST means if you want even remotely meaningful answers

Depends on the purpose you’re going for.
Crate engine for modern cars or restomods? LS for GM or Crate Coyote for Fords
FROM FACTORY pre modular Truck v8? NO idea about Chevy, but one of the reasons I bought my 72 f250 (which I should have bought a different one but I digress) was it supposedly had the vaunted (but stupid thirsty) 390.
Car crate engines? The 350 sbc comes to mind for Chevy and the 347 for Fords.
Don’t know shit about dodges other than I’ve been rear ended by 2 in my life and I’d rather not repeat that experience.

pretty subjective question, but GM. As others are saying, SBC and LS engines are the engine to swap, and for good reason, decent power for pretty cheap. Sure a coyote might make more power, but it’s not the same old pushrod V8 that’s everyone’s had for years and years. As my dad and grandpa would say “more shit to break”.

For reliability – Ford
Big power – Mopar
Best balance of both – GM

GM. But I’m in love with the HEMI V8s

Depends on the CI of the block. The best American V8 is the GM small block.

GM, they have the triple threat the small block chevy the LS and the big block chevy

If you want reliable I own a 4.6L in my Vic and tbh I think that’s the best v8 made easy and reliable but not fast

Don’t know what the answer to your question is…but that engine block is absolutely gorgeous. I want one.

“Best” is entirely subjective. But I have to echo everyone here and say the SBC. That thing lasted for half a century in production, it’s still being used today for a lot of resto-mods, you can keep it stock or tune the shit out of it and either one is acceptable, it’s as reliable as the day as long, and you can fix it for pocket change if something is to go wrong.
Hell, I’d argue it’s not only the best V8 ever made, it’s probably the best engine of all time. But, that’s my opinion.

The LT6 5.5L in the c8 z06 is objectively a masterpiece of an engine. 670hp naturally aspirated out of a 5.5L, that rivals the monstrous 4.0 flat 6 in the Porsche GT3 RS in terms of engineering and power per liter

I don’t think it can even be argued, it’s GM. The LS is iconic.

GM SBC and LS-based platform before AFM/DOD was implemented. From then on Ford’s Modular V8 (late year Triton engines and the Coyote) reign supreme.
