In China, the A2 Jetta (produced worldwide from 1984-1992) remained in production until 2013, with three major facelifts dividing it into three “generations” of its own. This model (the Jetta Pioneer) is the 3rd generation of Chinese Jetta, and it was produced from 2010-2013. It still basically consisted of a just a new front and back end grafted onto a standard A2 Jetta body.

This is similar to post-communist countries essentially giving “modern” facelifts to soviet era cars.
It probably passed China’s standardized frontal crash test with [flying colors](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgjtSilW8yM).
“based”?
I’ve always wanted to see one of these in either white or black, slammed, on BBS RS or similar type wheels.
Drivin around in a kitted-up Jetta
China did the same with Audi 100 (or, in North America, known as the 5000) from the 80s. I believe they were produced until the late 2000s, though they usually had a clone of a Mitsubishi four cylinder under the hood, iirc.
Reminds me of the Volkswagen Santana, which is treated as the OG Volkswagen and became the symbol of an era in my country.
Was there a Golf version as well?
I used to live in changchun china and those were everywhere
