My Dad had one for over 20 years. The one in the photo is a Series 2. It’s powered by a Renault engine. I was 7 when he got it and it was roomy in the passenger seat. When he finally let me drive it, 20 years later, I had to take my shoes off to drive it, and it felt like a coffin to sit in.

You have to see one in person to grasp why it’s shaped the way it is. The engine cover isn’t tall, it’s the passenger section that’s short. The roof of the car is 5 inches lower than a GT40. The whole thing only weighs around 1400 pounds

In ‘72 I lived along the beach hiway south of the emperors palace near Zushi Japan. It was a resort area, rich folks and tourists and I rode a 350 Kawasaki triple all over the place. That hiway followed the shoreline, it was twisty and had some spectacular views out over Tokyo bay.

There was a guy out there with a Lotus Europa and every now and again I’d find myself behind him. It was impossible to keep up. That guy was some kind of pro racer because he left me in the dust more than once. My motorcycle was known to be fast in a straight line but pretty terrible handling but I knew it wouldn’t have mattered, with that guy at the wheel I wasn’t going to catch up.

The Lotus occupied a big place in my imagination ever since. I never drove one, might not have been all that after all but I always wanted one.

I had to move ours in and out of the body shop as I was the only one that co uld fit in it.
Painted British racing green with a yellow stripe. Coffin on wheels is pretty accurate.
