2023 Vauxhall Astra GSe: Sporty Astra with plug-in hybrid power

Vauxhall has enjoyed a long history of making fast, sporty versions of its regular cars, and these versions have worn various different badges over the years. GTE. GSi. VXR. The list goes on. Fast forward to the present day, and Vauxhall still has a desire to make sporty cars, but the firm also appreciates that the world has changed, that it’s no longer enough to just shoehorn in a big, thirsty, dirty engine and not worry about the consequences. That’s why its come up with the new GSe badge, which stands for Grand Sport electric, which it considers a more sustainable and responsible approach to sportiness. It signifies what Vauxhall calls its new ‘electrified performance’ sub-brand, and it’s worn by cars that are packing a sporty attitude and, importantly, plug-in hybrid technology,

The latest Astra is the first car to get the GSe treatment, in both its hatchback and Sport Tourer estate forms. The Astra GSe combines a turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine with an electric motor to deliver 225 horsepower, allowing it to crack the 0-62mph dash in 7.5 seconds, and get up to a top speed of 146mph. All the while, it also manages an official WLTP fuel consumption figure of 257, and it’ll run on electric power alone for up to 40 miles, and at speeds of up to 84mph. It has the environmental bit of the brief nailed, then, but does the GSe convince and a sporty car?

In this CarGurus UK video, Deputy Editor Ivan Aistrop travels to the car’s international launch in Malaga, Spain, to determine exactly that. He takes a detailed look at all aspects of the GSe, assessing its quality, practicality, technology, value for money, and of course, what it’s like to drive.
