Kikuyo Taxi in Japan goes all-electric with Nissan LEAF

(Kumamoto, Japan) For people around the world looking for a comfortable taxi journey, riding in a taxi became a more enjoyable experience and better for the environment – starting in 2013 when a taxi company in Japan went all in and converted its entire fleet of conventional taxis to zero-emissions Nissan LEAFs.

Reduced emissions, significant savings, cheaper maintenance, plus a fun and comfortable ride are just a few of the benefits that come from operating an electric taxi.

Kikuyo Taxi is a company with a staff of 19 drivers, runs a fleet of 12 LEAF taxis. With the conversion to electric vehicles, the company not only cut down on its emissions but also reduced running costs by 80% compared to when it had its taxis running on fuel.

Kikuyo is a small farming town located in the center of the Japanese island of Kyushu and home to nearly 40,000 residents. The town set its goal to make the lives of the residents and visitors better in particular, preserving nature and the environment.

Kikuyo Town mayor Mitsuo Gotou stressed that zero-emissions mobility options were crucial to preserving the natural beauty and calm of the community. The municipality then joined hands with the local taxi company to replace it’s fleet of taxis to all-electric Nissan LEAFs.

With added incentives and support from the local municipality to improve infrastructure with additional EV charging points helped Kikuyo Taxi service longer distances to fulfill customer demands.

Kikuyo Taxi is a model for other towns that want to ensure a long-term future for their people.

Kikuyo Taxi president Takeshi Fujimoto says its Nissan LEAF taxi fleet helped define the company in the community as an environmentally-conscious mobility service provider guaranteeing a fun, clean and safe transportation.
Since then, taxi companies worldwide have also adopted zero-emission Nissan EVs in their fleet. Today, electric Nissan taxis – LEAF, e-NV200 or both – are in service on five continents, 26 countries and 113 cities around the world.
