2023 Toyota RAV4 PLUG-IN Hybrid – FIRST LOOK (Auto Messe Salzburg)

The Plug-in Hybrid arrives as the apex of the Toyota lineup and the flagship of Toyota’s hybrid models, offering an unparalleled combination of power and environmental efficiency in its class. The plug-in variant enhances and expands the model’s appeal.

Leveraging Toyota’s hybrid technology expertise, the Plug-in Hybrid not only boasts remarkable power, but also surpasses its competitors in emissions and fuel economy. Operating as a genuine electric vehicle by default, it can cover approximately 98 kilometers in urban driving on a full battery charge—well beyond the average European daily commute. Additionally, the hybrid can reach speeds of 135 kilometers per hour without intervention from the hybrid powertrain.

When extra power is required, the 2.5-liter Dynamic Force engine ensures class-leading efficiency. Charging the battery is simple, safe, and can be completed in 2.5 hours using a 230-volt connection. Standard features include remote scheduling and monitoring of battery charging, as well as cabin temperature control via the phone app.

Retaining the successful qualities of the fifth-generation RAV 4, the plug-in version benefits from the low center of gravity and high body rigidity inherent in Toyota’s GA-K vehicle platform. It also comes standard with all wheel drive intelligent all-wheel drive, complementing the existing RAV 4 Hybrid and solidifying Toyota’s electrification program.

Equipped with a more powerful motor, a larger battery, and an upgraded inverter, the RAV 4 Plug-in Hybrid offers significantly increased drive power, enabling greater distances and higher speeds in EV mode. The full powertrain output, including the 2.5-liter Dynamic Force hybrid engine, is an impressive 306 horsepower—38% more than the RAV 4 Hybrid. This translates to a 0-100 kilometers per hour acceleration time of 6 seconds, which is 2.1 seconds faster than its hybrid counterpart.

Designed to minimize noise and vibration, the RAV 4 Plug-in Hybrid features a transaxle with reduced gear resonance, polished tooth surfaces for smoother operation, and a damper system that mitigates shock and rattle during start-up and constant-speed driving. Further noise reduction is achieved with additional insulation in the wing linings and front pillars, as well as the use of acoustic glass for the windshield and front side windows.

The efficient air conditioning system incorporates a heat pump that extracts thermal energy from the outside air to heat the cabin, minimizing the impact on the vehicle’s EV driving range. The system’s S-FLOW control directs heating and ventilation only to occupied seats, adjusting performance based on selected temperature, ambient temperature, cabin temperature, and sunlight levels. The dehumidifier also features an “off” setting to conserve power when unnecessary.
