Plug-in hybrids have, for various reasons, been given a hard time by hardened electric car enthusiasts over the years.

They’re more complicated than conventional electric cars, are more costly to maintain, and until recently, only came with a range of between 10 and 20 miles per charge before their gasoline engine needed to kick in.

While there are more people plugging in than ever before, with rising plug-in car sales around the world, a large proportion of them are hybrid owners switching to electric — not ICE owners switching to a plug-in vehicle.

A new generation of plug-in hybrids are coming to market with ranges around the 50-mile (80km) mark. And it’s got us wondering. Are these the cars to get people plugging and dumping the pump?
