Likely not the hottest topic in any Porsche community but I’m getting good range numbers with my Taycan and wanted to share some of my tips.
It all starts with choosing your options:
1. I got the RWD version, 1 motor is more efficient than 2. (note that by now they released an update that allows AWD versions to decouple a motor in specific conditions, that wasn’t available when I ordered, 4S has a lot more power, RWD isn’t very impressive).
2. Pick aero wheels, I’ve gone with the default Aero S, there are better looking aero options. Not sure if size is very important.
3. Skip electric charge covers, the mechanics for the electric doors block aero features in front fender/wheel arch.
4. Skip glass roof, metal roof has aero features, glass doesn’t + weighs more (you could think I’m hardcore at this point, could be money related though :p). However glass roofs gives you some extra features like roof rack, dash cam and a little more headroom.
5. Don’t forget air suspension since that isn’t standard on RWD (it is on higher models). This allows lowering the car.
6. Pick sport chrono package, even if you don’t want to track it. The chrono package allows for a custom ride mode and easier selection from the steering wheel.
7. Don’t forget heat pump option (was free in my case, not sure if that is always the case).
8. Range manager is another free option I got in a business pack promo. This could help though there are apps like ABRP that can do similar things on your phone.
9. Pick adaptive cruise control, this allows for self driving features unlock afterwards plus regen AUTO plus it helps with smooth trotthle control.
10. Obviously the battery plus option gets you more range on 1 charge but also slightly more HP and charge power. However those numbers are only increased to compensate for a higher total weight and capacity of the battery and the car charges really quickly anyway so you could totally skip that battery plus package for a lighter/less expensive car.
Then while driving there are some more things you can do to get that extra range:
1. Higher tyre pressure helps with range. Keep tyre limits into consideration though.
2. Drive in RANGE mode or in a custom mode with air suspension low and stiff. Airco in ECO mode if you so wish (I don’t bother).
3. Pick a route with as minimal stop & goes as possible, long highway rides at constant speed are the best for range.
4. Use adaptive cruise control whenever possible, this allows for a smooth ride. I personally have it set to 122 kph on dash (more like 120 kph on GPS) cause we have a 120 kph speed limit on highways.
5. Disable regen or use regen in AUTO mode unless you’ll stop ‘n go all the time. The issue with regen is that recovering lost speed takes way more energy than what was recovered. Thus everytime the car slows down because you miscalculated or just somehow let go of trotthle will result in higher consumption.
