The EV Mindset, Why it may/or may not be the best for you!
Not at B&W Fort Washington once again in my basement and freezing as all living hell so uh I currently Dawning my wife’s wonderful super fuzzy blanket and uh coming to you today with a little bit of a thing where I’m going to go over some basic math of EV ownership as well as
Kind of the EV mindset and why it may or may not be the right fit for you so um as uh previously done before I’m starting to do these kind of nightly uh just overviews of questions answers frequently asked questions in the previous one today’s going to be a quick
Kind of overview obviously if anyone has any questions feel free to leave them in the comments below uh as we do this and uh yeah so uh welcome to anyone who desdes to be watching this while it’s going on otherwise catch it as a recording after
The fact uh in the meantime let’s go over some basic math as to why EVS are actually a fantastic idea so so um right here in Pennsylvania obviously it’s a little bit different depending on where you’re at but I can I’ll kind of round this out to make it as even numbers as
Humanly possible to make it super easy to digest so the idea and basically one of the main questions that gets asked um for someone who might be coming to EVS is is it a good idea for me to have an EV how much will it cost you know what’s
What’s the increase to my monthly uh electric bill to have an EV so I mean aside from the initial inst obviously you’re going to have to be charging your car at home or at least that’s the idea behind it and I’ll go over that a little
Bit later but uh the basic idea behind it is for instance uh let’s put it this way uh as of right now in Pennsylvania through Pico uh you can get uh all green electric for 10 cents per kilowatt so uh let’s do some basic mag theater so my I4
As of right now has 6 has let’s say 66 kilowatt hour hours of storage so charging 66 Kow at 10 cents per kilowatt is $6.60 that would be from a 0 to 100 charge the entire usable battery side the battery is actually 70.2 but that’s
Net not or that’s gross not net so I’m talking about the net uh usage in the I4 e Drive 35 my personal car right now obviously this will be a little bit more if you move up to you know an or an i4 non erve 35 the
I5 all those as well as the e Drive 40 for the I4 and M50 anyway sticking with the basic numbers so um 10 cents per 10 cents per kilowatt 66 kilow $6.60 to charge fully now if you take that over say 30 days that’s $198 in the course of a month for that
Here’s the thing if you say it like that it obviously turns into that is a lot of money or a little money depending on what you’re filling up but take to take into account the average I5 right now which will get you about 500 mil of
Range costs on current gas uh 91 octane $828 to fill up your average one not not completely empty but mostly empty maybe like 10 miles left to a full tank and if you take that out that becomes uh sorry $164 sorry I did a little bit wrong math um a so say you
Do let me take it back a step sorry brain’s right ahead of my the rest of me um what was I saying before right so 10 cents 10 cents per kilowatt 66 Kow $660 per kilowatt take that over 30 days is $198 to fill up um to fill up every single day
Of the month a full fill a full charge however that’s not how most people drive so the average person drives about 1,00 miles per month assuming about a 50 50 mile uh round trip or 50 m driven a day 6 days a week 5 days a week give or take
So about 100 or 1100 uh miles a month uh and what you have to do to make that kind of more apples to apples is you take that $6.60 to fill up an entire thing to fill up an entire usable battery uh divide that by 256 that’s the
Average mileage that you get in the I4 e Drive 35 which basically means that it costs um 2.85 cents per mile of driving so if you times that by 10 and or 1100 miles that means it costs $28.30 a month to drive an iPhone for e
Drive 35 and again that goes up a little bit more but that’s really not much especially when you compare that out um by the way just as a little side notes uh again basic math of driveing if you really did a full charge every single day did an entire battery in one
Month what’s the best way to get M5 which version of the M5 you trying to get are you looking for like the current M5 or previous M5 you’re talking about the V10 the first generation uh twin turbo pardon me my wife’s texting me while I’m doing that get that later
2018 it’s a very good question they’re really hard to come by a lot of people that seem to get these M cars are are very fast to continue holding on to them if they’re not automatically updating so honestly um cars and bids is a fantastic place to be uh bringing trailer is another
Fantastic one uh you might get a little bit overpriced on whatever it might be so uh do a little bit of research I do suggest looking at KBB and um everyone 2012 550 yeah the T12 550i is not a bad car uh that’s kind of one of the first
Iterations of that twin turbo V8 the hot V8 uh the hot vvh that came out so they’ve gone through two techacal updates since then um so it’s a good car is it the best iteration of that engine definitely not uh they were definitely known for kind of eating through turbos
Uh having problems with seals just because they were that was the first time they were really doing that hot V8 setup where you have the turbos in the middle of your V8 um setup so because of that probably not the best iteration of it worst engine no but I’d rank it in
Terms of like all the engines that BMW has ever made probably like right in the middle in terms of the best and worst engines that BMW has ever come out with um obviously anything’s better than that n series four-cylinder turbo I’m so sorry anyone from BMW North America or
Corporate if you were watching this and hear me say that but you guys did you really dropped the ball when that when the f- series uh three series came out yeah yeah yeah do that’s that’s pretty common uh for that I mean again all around for what it is it’s kind of
Like the middle of the road in terms of like Motors alog together um it could have definitely been better and obviously like I said they’ve come out with two technical updates to that motor since then and that’s actually what’s in the like like kind of a version of that
Is what’s in the current or I guess now just discontinued uh m550 which was fantastic and that was Al that same car was also in the 7 Series the 750 and that was a really really amazing car in engine and now they also have a version of that that’s currently in the
M760 which tally is getting they’re now getting actual D- tuned M engines but I mean that was the basis of it and when you looked at those the those Motors compared to what was getting put out in the actual M cars they have the same torque it’s just horsepower difference
Between the two of them and it’s not that much of a horsepower difference so I don’t think they’re a fantastic buy all around I mean again if you’re getting the older ones like you said you’re 2012 or would you say 2013 I already forget I apologize but great
Great motor um in terms of the V8s that are put out there um I actually prefer that over the E90 M3s V8 2012 thanks for the reminder um I just don’t think it was the best uh twin turbo V8 that B has come out with so if I was going to do
That I’d probably go with a 2021 2022 m550 uh version just for a the newer I drive 7 um interface which is still to this day probably my favorite uh interface for R drive so far I do like I drive 8.5 but I had some bugs when it first came out they’ve
Since fixed that so I do appreciate that um anywh who uh sorry for that little sidebar uh but back to what we were talking about before I was talking about right uh yeah oil and oil in that thing once in a mile but yeah 85,000 km is a good
Amount good amount of miles that’s not bad for 2012 actually how you get one so low miles do you get used I assume or have you had that since the beginning I mean either way awesome for you so keep it up obviously keep that keep that oil
Fresh as you can to make those turbos happy as can be because yeah dral bearing turbos are not a fan of being too hot when oil’s inside them um yeah I hope you had an oil timer added to that thing just to make sure it runs through there a little bit longer
When you turn off the car cuz that’ll make it last a little longer and might save you from uh some really nasty cold start issues that you could run into any who daily driving daily driving an i4 e Drive 35 um at $4 $4.95 a day um or sorry $6.60 a day
$198 in a month and that’s charging fully using the entire battery 30 days a month awesome but let’s just put that in perspective of how that is not really the reality for like 99% of people that drive every day because that is the equivalent of driving
7,680 m in a day or in a month that is just not what people drive like I said they drive closer to 100 so 1100 miles in a month so 1,100 miles in a month that is much more consistent uh with most people’s daily drives and again
Doing that on the more expensive style is $28. 36 a month if you do it on on non one so my current uh it currently costs me uh me personally 7.5 cents uh per kilowatt uh as I am right now so I actually if I was charging at home on a daily
Basis I probably uh doing my current mileage in a month it would only cost me $212 in a month to drive uh my current car my w car is even less cuz that’s 9 KW that she uses and she and she never even takes a tempt so hers is hers fills
Up for 35 35 cents it’s it’s in it’s insane but yeah our bills even with two electric cars one plugin hybrid one full electric our our entire bills have gone up basically nothing now U compare that that higher monthly cost so at 20 $20.36 a month that’s on the higher
Possible electric cost kind of it out to 10 cents per kilowatt that means that for an entire year an entire year of driving it would cost $340 that exact same amount of mileage on an X5 actually it’s less mileage on an X5 costs 2,000 a year in gas just
340 2,00 000 340 2000 340 2000 340 2,000 it’s it’s not even comparable if you’re looking at that then you factor in extra things like the fact that um electric cars do not have the electric cars do not have oil changes they don’t have spark plugs they don’t have timing
Chains they don’t have all these other things that need to be tuned up either at 75,000 miles 125,000 miles whatever it might be they gets more things all in all now do electric cars still have things that can go wrong of course you can have your combo charge unit go wrong
That’s what converts AC to DC in your car that’s how what went wrong in my car I had it and it just suddenly stopped taking AC charging it could still DC charge but AC charging did not work so all that factors into uh just one facet of why
EV ownership could be fantastic for you and again you know if you’re not ready for full EV ownership p are a great way to go especially with you know 40 Mi of electrical only range on things like the x550e great way to go and a great way
Kind of dip your toes in the pool and see if it’s something that works for you now if you are going into electric electric uh driving and um plug-in hybrids if you go mostly Highway not super efficient uh when you go that definitely not inefficient obviously I drive 90 98% highway on my
Daily drives anyway and it works great I love every second of it um but this kind of factors into a different kind of mindset for Ev ownership so typical gas gas ownership you get in your car you drive it around second it says you’re low you fill
Up primary one k second my wife is texting me while I do this in the background here really quick terribly sorry for this moment and I’m back sorry about that um so EV ownership obviously gas you just drive around second it says hey you already have 20 miles left 50 m left if
Empty you go to gas fill it up and then you drive again until it happens again EV ownership and plug-in hybrid ownership is a little bit different um but chances are if you already have a phone you already live that lifestyle which I’m going to go on a limb here and
Say that literally 100% of the people that are going to watch this have a phone have a smartphone something that literally needs to be charged on a daily basis it’s the same concept and the benefit of this is again as long as you have a level to charger at your house
You basically get home you plug in charge it up if you want to you can do the Tesla style where you don’t charge to 100% if you’re not going to be driving that much on a daily basis PVS obviously plug in charge to 100% get your maximum range cuz it’s only going
To be helpful it’s never a bad thing and again being WS have a built-in buffer in their in their vehicles so whether you have the plug-in hybrid or you have the full electric vehicle 100% is not 100% 0% is not 0% there’s a buffer there to
Make it last a little bit longer so benefit there but again if you are someone who is hellbent on the noise is like you need to hear your motor EV might not be the way for you U obviously we have iconic sounds that’s something that can help with that but if
You do not like that or you think you know oh I hate pumpin Sound it might not be the way for you and that’s perfectly okay you know um but it’s all good it’s all good things because the end end of the day is one of the reasons why I personally
Am a big fan of BMW and why I have decided to come back to the brand after leaving temporarily for um for Porsche McLaren uh Lamborghini and Maserati great people not the best cars um but the reason I keep going back to B&W is again I am a massive fan of their
Portfolio and the fact that they my best guess is probably by the end of 2030 2035 at the very latest every single BMW variant out there will have not only a gas version but either a full electric version with it or a full electric and plug-in hybrid version so it’s only
Going to get better from here it might be a situation where quite frankly you might have too many choices because if I did my I did a thing on this um a little while ago where I actually counted out exactly how many variants are sold in North America
Alone and it was something like if you do every single um model trim and engine option it was something like 78 different variants that you could pick from BMW Alan which is again great lots of choices there’s kind of something for everyone we have everything as low as
$35,000 $336,000 starting all the way up to in this case $200,000 you know label red or you know an i7 M70 so bottom line is wherever you sit on the Spectrum B&W has something for you and you have fantastic German engineering knowhow decades and decades and Decades
Of experience and just really great cars all around which is one of the reasons why I keep coming back to BMW and mini myself cuz I just I love the brand and that’s one of the reasons why I advocate for it and why even though I’m off hours
I’m still advocating for it here on on on a in my basement which almost seems counterintuitive I feel like I should have a giant mansion behind me and follow that but no I I live in a MOS home with my family of five and five C five animals four cats and a dog
And it’s a lot but bottom line is for my particular lifestyle I found that EVS fit really well into my needs my daily drives my family’s needs their daily drives and and because of that it works for me personally if I was going to be driving if my daily Drive looks closer
To I mean then again you’re talking about the actual EV experience I have to say that because you have Electrify America two years of 30 minute complim charging even if you are driving long-term Highway drives like for instance if I drove from here to wilu Lake New Jersey Jersey on a
3-day 4day basis if I worked at corporate but lived here in Philadelphia it still would actually be more beneficial for me to have an electric car because of the comary charging that I get for the first two years and even if I move off that charging and switch to Electrify America
Um you have subscription Services you can get there which are really cheap about $5 a month and I can charge at all those on the way up and still pay less than I would if I was using gas only plus complim charging options for the first two
Years it it almost makes more sense to go electric for most unless you drive 500 plus miles 300 plus miles in a day on a daily basis that’s kind of the only situation where I can really say that I think electric cars are not the best for you because even if you’re
Looking at non all-wheel drive electric cars or even in this case non all-wheel drive gas cars obviously having a drive is fun it’s great and efficient in some ways inefficient in others electric car is great because you had two Motors that means more regen options and you know potentially slightly better range than
Otherwise you would have um with gas CS obviously all-wheel drive takes away a little bit of your efficiency because now you’re driving four wheels instead of just two so um factor that in two again electric R will be a little more efficient in that sense but driving longterm driving in
All-wheel drive in this particular area not really necessary for all-wheel drive that’s why I’ve never had all-wheel drive cars in my entire ownership uh of vehicles I’ve always had front-wheel drive or rear wheeel drive vehicles and I always it always comes down to tires for me personally so it’s
Just one of the many factors of ownership that you need to think about if you are even considering this as your um as part of your potential cars if you’re in the markets or in the future markets planning ahead whatever it might be but the idea here is still to
Just factoring your needs like first and foremost to make sure uh you have that oh soor I am so terribly sorry I didn’t realize that um I do semi another message here I have a problem with the front wheel bearing and it will cost me 400 Canadian to fix it
Is that normal honestly yeah it’s that’s about right for the actual part so uh the it depends on if they included labor in with it it is a little bit of a labor intensive piece if you want to get that fixed but um $400 Canadian for for wheel bearing is pretty pretty
Standard you know if if it’s $400 Canadian and that includes the labor to put it in extra bonus um if you have the stuff to do it at home do it that do it that way save a little bit of money um I basically do most of my own work work
Outside of full electric work at this moment although at this point I feel like I start looking into full electric work at home as well um but yeah I have a I have like a whole setup on that side of my basement just for this kind of stuff Hello 202 3 i7 after
Software update uh why self-drive and quit working ah so um after major updates uh if you did have a major updates uh for it whether that’s one of the over theair updates uh remote software updates or if you went into the shop and they did reprogramming a lot of
Things F go back to factory settings like when they came in for delivery so what you’ll need to do to fix that um all you have to do is go back into your uh Drive settings make sure that you’re logged in make sure that um everything
Is up to date you will get a notification saying that you need to uh relog back in or if you go to your BMW ID it might say um instead of all good it might say limited right next to your name let you know you need to Reign back
In to basically reconfirm that is your car and active after you do that you’ll probably need to go back in to your drive settings and um save and uh your drive settings and go into the safety safety and safety Drive settings so the option on the left side not the
Main drive one when you have your options for your regen but the one on the left and reset your driving dist your distance control reset your uh routes notifications and assistance as well as make sure that assist of driving is all the way on last but not least
Something that might have been changed back to factory setting would be your data privacy so go into your settings um system settings scroll all the way down to data privacy and make sure that that top option uh is selected so that is that is all systems uh including
Analysis or all systems with analys no all systems including analysis is what it’s called and then after you’ve done that go down one option in that same list and make sure that all abs and services are up to date that should fix that then take it back out and double check it
Um hope that hope that helps Mike no idea if you’re still watching when I said that but yeah hopefully hope that’ll help um obviously any questions feel free to leave any comments on any the on any of my uh videos uh you can also reach me at john. duny
Jn. d n py at my one.com and I’ll help you uh in any way I can uh you know over the Internet so best of luck let me know how it goes Mike all righty um I’m not going to lie I kind of I’m already kind of done my my
Spiel that I wanted to do for this particular uh run through with a couple sidebars there for uh questions that came in but um if anyone else that’s watching wants to have wants to ask any questions obviously I leave it uh leave this open to any of you ATA points uh
This isn’t like a scripted thing so obviously you can interrupt with anything you want um ask me any questions that you want about BMWs or any the other manufacturers I’ve been with I’ll happily answer I could talk about my experience with Tesla versus my experience with BMW uh versus my
Experience with my electric mini and you know I can go over any any and all things so let me know what what you guys want to hear um chances are uh this seems to be working pretty well with my particular schedule and how I’ve been putting these guys out there so I will
Probably be start doing a not nightly live show but but uh maybe like in every other night’s live show hi baby hi baby what’s up sorry while my cat’s coming down here to say hi hi baby Yara you want to come say hi want come over here say
Hi no you just wanted your toy okay bye-bye any who yeah that uh covers uh EV lifestyle why it might or may not be good for you and uh going over just basic cost of what it would cost to fill your car uh with us or with your particular electrician
Obviously um if you ever need uh you can kind of factor in your own idea of exactly how much it should cost you uh so the basic math I did let me let me throw this out there for you so this should be reverse for me but I believe
It’s straight up for you cuz I did this before and I checked it after the fact but um bottom line of it if you’re going to go through it yourself uh if you want to factor in how much it would probably cost you a month to actually um have an
Electric car charge it at your house and see what that would cost you the way I factored mine in here so I did my cost per kilowatt hour this is what it costs me at my own house uh obviously look at your electric bill figure out what that
Is then you’re going to uh take that see exactly how much your battery takes net uh for it to consider that a full charge then you’re going to obviously times two of those together that’s going to be your cost so again $4.95 is what it cost for me currently if I fully
Charge my car 0 to 100 and uh take that out for 30 days that’s your worst case scenario literally charging every single day uh from 0 to 100 that’s how much it will cost you uh but again people do not drive that much so the way
You have to look at it instead is at a add a full charge uh take whatever your you know expected range is or if you have it actually factored out exactly how much your range is take your range and look at that times that by what your
Cost per um sorry take that and divide your cost for a full charge by that that’ll give you a cost per mile and then times that by your average monthly mileage so that’s how I came up with all this guy this guy right here so of
Course I was me uh as you can see my not right here full charge of 256 mil for 30 days is 7,680 MI no one drives that much I L wrote that no one drives that much so instead at $4.50 for a full charge at 68 Co hour battery gets 256 miles and
The cost per mile is of course 1.9 times that by your average uh monthly Drive which in my case is 1,00 MIL a month and that brings us to $21 27 a month of electric ownership obviously you can do this math um for you personally and whatever car
You’re looking at this again is the e Drive 35 I4 um you can do the same factors if you want I can I can do for maybe tomorrow’s uh tomorrow night’s thing I can run through the basic cost um here in Pennsylvania with a rounded out number of 10 cents per kilowatt I
Can go over the cost for an i4 an i4 e Drive 40 an i5 an IX an i7 and even the plug-in hybrids to tell you exactly what your kind of expected higher cost scenario might be uh just in terms of daily charging over the month and uh I
Can give you a basic rundown of what that could be uh obviously if you guys like the idea let me know in the comments and I will will do so so uh with that I’m going to cut this guy at 31 minutes uh for today thanks so much
Everyone for watching there’s a little bit of rambling in the process and I apologize for that but you know that’s what happens when we it’s a live chat and we allow people to ask questions in the process there’s a little bit of side bars as it goes forward but all in all
