Nail Biter Result: GM vs Tesla vs Subaru vs The World’s Toughest EV Range Test!
Hey guys today we have a super fun video because we’ve got four brand new electric cars and we’re going to take them over two mountain passes twice to see which one runs out of juice first Roman there’s a problem with that we only have three electric cars here no no
No case you are mistaken because we have the Subaru sutera which is also because of badge engineering the Toyota b4x all right well other than that we’ve also got this Tesla Model y performance and we have the Blazer EV RS so I’ve lost about uh 4 miles a range in
The last mile and a half that number just keeps going down and down so Roman I think you can go to the Mills right now uh we’re at the top of the hill you’re it’s home free now oh no we’re not Andre we’re not at the top of the
Hill I wish we were you are a brave man I feel very fortunate today because I’m driving the Tesla Model y performance of course it’s all-wheel drive car and it’s a crossover and it’s the quickest and the fastest but that doesn’t matter today but what matters is 303 miles of
Total range according to Tesla I’m driving the U toy buru or suot whichever one you prefer because this car is identical whether it’s a Subaru or a Toyota now it does have the slow charging rate and the least amount of range officially it’s just over 225
Miles and we’re going to try to go at least 250 miles on a charge so I’m certainly the most nervous but you know what maybe it’ll surprise me and I’m driving the Chevy Blazer EV RS all-wheel drive and the range on this is 279 I have the biggest battery but not the
Most range and I’m somewhere in the middle when it comes to charging speed by the way thanks to our friend Frasier for providing his person model y I am resetting the trip meter a so I can track uh my progress right here this car has 33,333 Mi on the odometer and basically
Full charge 96% battery near the beginning of this test so there are two numbers that I want to bring to your attention first this is a brand new saltera 257 mil just on the odometer and then this is an important number that’s how many miles the car thinks we can go
Or I can go on this charge 297 uh which is I think optimistic especially when we start going over two mountain passes twice but this number is pretty good 2.9 miles per kilowatt hour and that’s basically driving it just from our offices to here and here in the Blazer
EV I’m at 97% state of charge and 275 Mi indicated here on the dash and I will go ahead and reset my trip one so we can start fresh All right boys here we go we’re going to go up into the mountains make this one of the hardest range tests possible so first we’re going to go over basically the Eisenhower tunnel and then over Veil pass uh and then turn around and do it again heck yeah and are you guys going
To be using your um autopilot the rules are we drive the cars ourselves and we don’t put it in any special mode so uh no chill mode for you Andre no no but but I have only two options chill or Sport and this is not a
Race no we’re going to keep these car I’ve got you know in eco mode too but let’s just keep in regular mode I mean we’re going to approximate the way that people drive these cars um to get you know a realistic range number uh I should be the one who’s the most worried
Because you know this um and I was joking about this right I said this is a Subaru SL Toyota but they were developed jointly with basically the only difference being the badge on the front man we’ve got a lot of driving uphill ahead of us Roman yes we do but we also
Have a lot of driving downhill which you know helps regen so let me know Andre what size is your battery well Tesla doesn’t completely List It information but according to everything we know it’s approximately 80ish Kow hours maybe just a little bit less than that and I have between 450
And 500 horsepower at my disposal so and all will drive it to boot how about you case what size battery give me your numbers oh man Andre’s got a small battery cuz I’ve got an 85 KW battery and I’m also all-wheel drive with a combined power rating from these two
Electric motors of about 288 horsepower yeah you guys are making me uh feel very inadequate cuz this Subaru only has 215 horsepower it’s got a 72.8 see how specific that is uh kilow hour battery but I beat you guys on ground clearance I’ve got 8.3 in well if
There’s at any point a battle of looks I think this Blazer EV is easily the best looking car here well here’s the other thing ironically I’ve got the premium version which is the uh inexpensive one so this thing you know lists out right around uh starts at about
45ish give or take how about you Andre what’s that uh what’s that Tesla worth well before I tell you the list price Roman I have to ask you what in the world is wrong with your license plate yeah it’s a little crooked um the uh the
Rena car agency was very keen to get this into the fleet so they uh they took some shortcuts all right so the list price before any you know tax incentives on the Tesla Model wi performance is around $552,000 a little bit more than that currently but of course those prices can
Fluctuate you know week to week how about you case what’s your uh Blazer worth well the MSRP on this model starts around 53,000 but the way that mine is spec is right around 60 G but at least my license plate is on straight wow that
Is a lot that is a lot for basically the Chevy version of the Cadillac lyric well you know the good news about this car is it doesn’t qualify I’m I’m sorry did I say good news I meant bad news it doesn’t qualify for the tax Rebat all right gentlemen so we are starting at about 5,000 ft above sea level and at the top of the uh Eisenhower Tunnel we’re almost what 11,000 ft yeah just over 11 here’s something funny now this sutera started out with 298 M range we have gone 29 M
Almost 30 and I’m down to 195 M A Range well I think that car was brand new right so it had no idea the life it was going to live yeah and we are going uphill for most of it so I’m getting 2.5 m per kwatt hour since I reset back in
Boulder case what are you doing well for a while there before we started cranking up hill I was doing almost 3 m per Kow hour but now I’m at 2.3 m per kilowatt hour and I have 235 m of range left estimated so a little less efficient
Than you but my range is still better all right Mr Tesla I mean Andre what what do you got thank you um I I’m at 2.73 m per Kow hour still climbing um and I’ve got 221 is miles of range left so I’m relatively confident that I I can
Make the entire way uh we shall see so let me ask you boy this I’ll start with you case if you had to pick uh the prettiest let’s say the most handsome car here what would it be oh come on it’s this Blazer easily we got a low
Roof line a high Belt Line This is a sharp car at sleek and then look at this interior black and red I think this is easily the winner in that category Andre what’s your uh call I hate to say it but I I have to agree with case I mean I do
Like the model y especially you know a couple of small touches that Fraser the owner of the car did uh but the Blazer is sharp yeah I’m with you guys uh I have to pick the Blazer as well it’s a very good looking car you know it’s 4 in
Wider than that uh Tesla you’re driving Andre that’s a huge amount uh let me ask you something else Roman um who here has the biggest trunk uh trunk or front I’m talking about in the front a little compartment in the front of your vehicle to put things into that’s a good
Question I haven’t even looked at the frunk on this car I’ll help you out you have none and case has none winner Tesla hey guys we may be in some difficulty with my car really yeah yeah so I’ve gone about 65 miles yeah um and the car
Says I’ve got about a half a battery or about 125 mil left range how about you case well funny enough I’ve also gone 65 mil and I’m at 61% battery with 165 M range left how about you what yeah um my car is showing 15 53 Mi of range left so
You are showing the most range but I should be doing better shouldn’t I well I’m hoping that going down the backside of the Eisenhower Tunnel we can recoup some power and then going up Veil pass and down Veil pass but I may have to turn around uh at bail
Pass otherwise we’ll be Towing you otherwise and we don’t we don’t have a tow truck now it is cold right it is snowing but still that is a little no but we left on the perfect day it was like 65° in Boulder this is the world not quite 65 here the world’s toughest
Range test Andre Roman I think I see your problem is this your battery it’s not very big oh I’m too cold what the hell well there’s a lot more to look at under here than under my hood yeah yeah well you know easily replaceable belts but you guys you are
You are you guys missing something don’t touch yeah that looks dangerous don’t touch that but where do you put your you know your Christmas dish look let me show you so I’ve got a nice you know nice dish and I I can put like a carryon
Bag here you good how about you case what do you got uh nothing there’s nothing to talk about nothing to laugh about it’s just a Chevy logo you think for the Cadillac they put the Cadillac logo I would hope so that’s what you’re paying for oh look but you’ve got a
Little flab here washer fluid wow oh look there’s your terminal or something oops I broke it yeah by the way why don’t we have like a MCH e Mustang Ford or a Nissan ARA here or some others next video Andre oh next [Applause] One all right boys I got to say the most disappointing thing about um the display on this Subaru is I got a little blue line that tells me what percentage of battery I have left uh and it’s very imprecise so the best I can tell you is
That I regen about 8 mil of range according to this computer at least coming down the backside of uh the Eisenhower Tunnel and funny enough I’m at exactly the same number 8 mil of range regenerated so far and that equates to 2% battery for me well I
Regained about 7 m of range according to my Tesla and approximately 2 KW hours put back into the battery so I think this could have been better I was expecting a little bit better results but I still have 152 Mi left of range how comfortable uh are your individual
Cars case how comfortable is that on a long uh road trip it’s not bad the seats are plenty comfortable and the interior is nice but if anything this car is a little on the stiff side how about you Andre Tesla comfy you like the seats
Yeah I’m a fan um I can get comfortable and I haven’t tried the back seat but I I I think it’s better than the model 3 that I took cross country with Tommy and Cole um so I’m pretty happy I’ve got a lot of piano black which you know
Collects dust and I’ve got these kind of interesting uh cloth seats but as a whole it’s a lot of gray and black in Here all right boys we made it to Veil but yeah we can’t go any farther why not because the point is to make it back to Golden where we have both test and a CCS charger to see how fast these cars charge and you know how much power
We’ve used and how much range we have but I’m down to get this 86 miles range which is just about how far it is to get to Golden if we go any farther I’m going to be at the side of the road what battery percentage is that uh it doesn’t
Tell you there’s a little blue line about that much oh that much here’s the full one and I’m I’m like there okay so you’re less than half yeah oh way less than half yeah it’s very precise it’s not very precise okay how are you guys doing oh I’m great I’m sitting pretty at
52% I’m sitting pretty nice I’ve got like 130 miles left that’s do you have a toe strap do you have a toe strap do you have a toe Point not with me all right no hitches no hitches do we have a hitch no no hitch no all right you got fans
Out here you can hitch a ride riches for snitches Andre all right well let’s turn around head back and see if I can make it back to the charger you’re in Golden how about you lead sure I’ll lead yeah all right I’ll go first so we know how slow
You’re or fast you’re moving yeah I mean look we got two more passes to go over and Veil pass that way is a lot longer than Veil pass this way yeah all right let’s Go so I’ve lost about uh 4 miles a range in the last mile and a half that number just keeps going down and down very quickly and that’s because I’m climbing at a very steep rate up fail pass at about 65 mph and of course the problem is this is
Why people are afraid to road trip electric cars because the potential energy in the battery especially when it gets cold and especially when you’re doing something like going up the mountain pass just goes away like that it’s a problem look I’m almost on a 60 M of
Range and um you know I’m driving at the pace of traffic around me and watching that number go down is just making me uh stressed out and of course I got a Mercedes pulling up behind me trying to get past me so I’ll move over and let him
By and watch my number drop some more all right gentlemen going up the I Gauntlet in an electric car and not towing anything Andre sorry I know you’ll be told with Tacoma soon but now we’re doing moitra car test and I got to tell you um yeah yeah I’m down
To 46 M of range I’ve driven 137 Mi so I’m I’m going to be about I’ll be lucky to break 200 mil on a full charge well um I’m doing a little bit better but I’m kind of upset I think case is doing a little bit better than me well I’m
Finally below 50% battery I’m at 39% right now but I still got 106 miles of range so I haven’t dipped into two digits so from my point of view the Tesla has kind of been where I expected it to be about 25% less range than you know stated by Tesla and the e
PA this has underperformed uh and uh the Blazer Eevee has overperformed very impressive so here’s my question boys once we get past Georgetown there’s still another big uphill and then we’re in kind of a fast charging uh desert in other words there’s no fast Chargers past Georgetown
Uh until we get to uh Evergreen and uh right now even going downhill dude I don’t think I’m going to make it there all righty well let’s take it one step at a time let’s get to the tunnel and see how you Doing all right Roman how how are you doing well I’ve got bad news and I got worst news the worst news I’ll go with the bad news first I dropped 28 M A Range that’s the bad news and the worst news is I did it in 8
Miles well you were climbing the world’s toughest Towing test what do you expect is going to happen I guess this is what I should have expected but um I’m I’m going downhill I’m down to 29 miles so uh let’s see how much range I have we get to
Georgetown uh and then we’ll make a decision maybe I can regen something it gets pretty steep coming down to Georgetown from here but the problem is after that uh the next uh fast charger is probably too far for me to make it but let’s play it by here again from
What it’s worth I also burned up 20 M of range heading up that butt I also have a buffer but boys it’s all downhill from here if that were the case Andre I would be going to Denver but it’s not you know that better than I do remember what
Happened in the EV uh in the GT I’ve got 4% remaining made to the top of the first Hill congratulations okay low low power 0% 0% no miles uh and another Hill coming up still moving at 0% still moving still moving that’s it I’ve got nothing I’ve
Got I’ve got nothing left nothing oh come on dude I really wanted to say that saying all right sorry yep it’s all down here from here except for that big long uphill stretch it’s all downhill all right boys I am bypassing Georgetown this is my last potential stop for a fast charger
Before the big uphill again I’ve got 34 M of range uh I don’t think I’m going to make it but uh we’re going to find out well it’s certainly a bold move but I do like your idea of going through the canyon because that lets US Route around at
Least one pretty steep and long uphill section yeah so we’ll we’ll do another decision when we get to the canyon I’ll see how far it is uh to the Evergreen Chargers and I’ll see how much power I’ve got left uh and we’ll make a decision whether to go down to Golden
Through the canyon or to try to make it to uh the Evergreen Chargers okay sounds good all right I put it in eco mode because well I had to uh and um I don’t have a lot of faith in this car I don’t know what happens when you get
Down to like 10 miles but I fear we’re going to find out I could use the navigation system to tell me if I can make it but here’s the rub oh wait a minute what if you’re on now can we call Hurst and have them pick you
Up I don’t know if we can Call Hurst and have to pick me up that’s a good question I was just showing them that the fact that the navigation system uh is a subscribe only feature doesn’t allow me to use it to figure out whether
I can make it to the charger or not unlike you and case which actually would know all right Deion time guys I’ve got about 10 miles to get to the charger car says 30 m it’s uphill so I’m going to try to go for it I’m going to try to get to Evergreen
Chargers uh with 30 m range but you know some uphill oh come on live Dangerously all right when we start going uphill I’m going to slow down so um I’m probably going to go below the speed limit uh so just be aware I might go U you know 10
Miles I don’t want to go too slow cuz it’s dangerous on the highway but a lot of the big trucks slow up slow down going up this next big hill and so I don’t think I’ll be going any slower than they are well if it makes you feel
Any better I’ve got 111 M of range oh that cheered me up so much Cas thank you for telling me how about you Andre what do you got I’m at 68 all right uphill 30 m of range about 10 Mi to go wish me luck
Guys I got a little lucky boys I got stuck behind a car carrier going very slowly which is exactly what I need to be doing throw I think you can go to the Mills right now uh we’re at the top of the hill you’re it’s home free now oh no
We’re not Andre we’re not at the top of the hill I wish we were uh my uh my warning says traction battery level low charge vehicle soon well it’s not wrong what’s a traction battery do they mean the main battery I think my 12vt is fine well traction I guess your tires
Have some traction still um I don’t know I’m going to try to make it to Evergreen Mills um I’m going to I’m going to pass my sure thing and go for the long shot you are a brave man no I’m just a very stupid man Andre stupid not brave I
Believe this is where you pulled off last time Andre yeah I died at the top of this mountain so you’re doing better than me all right dude I think I made it uh 22 miles of range left and we’re probably like 5 miles away from the Chargers so um happy day oh boy
I just had a thought dude what’s that is a station up and running sorry I’m sorry I I choked a little bit I was laughing so hard well I guess we’ll find out Huh the Subaru SL Toyota should charge at 100 kilowatts which is you know okay for five years ago not so much today when some Vehicles do up to 350 hey Andre yo what up all right I’m just going to use my credit card oh 56 cents that’s a lot if you’re
Not a member yeah that’s a lot but we are members isn’t Tommy a member I’m a member but I lost my login just easier to do it this way come on start buzzing stop processing and start buzzing how fast do you think it’ll charge I have no confidence in this
Car it will charge at 100 Kow Max possible all right I’m going to try uh let me try Apple Apple pay so when do I tell you that I have Tommy’s app on my phone well now tell me now try it my phone all right get your phone oh it
Knows my face okay all right all right I’m plugging in try again okay here we go plugging in charger two charger number two conected to the vehicle how far is it to boulder oh for God’s sakes well it’s still initiating oh that’s a good sign initiating is a good sign when it starts
Humming that’s even better oh initiating well I said initiating but it’s not humming yet oh is it going there it is we’re charging yes all right let’s see how fast we get going yeah let’s look at this number yeah it’s zero we’re we’re at 11% of battery Andre so we were kind
Of approximating correct yeah but still not taking a charge what do you think dude the excitement is palpable charge Time 1 minute charging cost up but it’s delivering 0 Kow speed which doesn’t make any sense for all of you people out there who hate electric cars I mean I completely sympathize I
Just plugged it in it says energy delivered 0 kilowatt charging cost zero I don’t know what kilowatt rate is charging at this says uh 5 days till full this say is 39 minutes till full the two are obviously not talking to each other uh and um yeah
We would have filled up all three cars at a regular gas station by now I completely understand all right I just back up I hit the little button the flap opened that’s one way to do it I’m close enough thank goodness I’m going to try to plug it in and this
Station is really well utilized right now I mean there’s a lot of cars here there’s a low green light so in theory ah I can hear it so check it out so this car is supposed to be capable of 250 KW speed um it’s a 229
According to the car and there are other testas here like I showed you and it’s pumping a lot of energy almost maximum available I’m currently at 24% of my battery and uh I I’m pretty impressed it was very simple I just backed in plugged in I’m getting a lot of energy even
Though other cars are here and I’m very happy right now all right boys it’s Christmas time so let’s put a bow on this video I looked at all the EA stations are all hosed up so if we were to charge up the Blazer Eevee all we’re
Getting is a test of the Chargers not a test of the vehicle so how how many miles of range does it say you have left right now it’s still telling me 126 M of range which is pretty impressive because so far we’ve gone according to this 195
Mil and my average has been 3.2 Kow mil your car is doing better than the EPA potentially set yeah it seems like it yes how about you Andre well I have good news and bad news all right the good news this is my 3.82 m per Kow hour that’s really efficient
Car that is yes that’s very nice but I only have like 50 Mi left yeah which is interesting so that’s nowhere near 303 mil that Tesla promised me on this trip but the charging experience is really positive so on the world’s toughest range test uh sutera did not no definitely not me
Expectations or its promised range yeah and it did make me the most nervous so I would say the winner is the Blazer EV oh come on the Tesla did what the Tesla does and the sutera well the saltera did what the saltera did which you guys saw
Yeah I mean the Blazer impressed that was more than we were expecting so that’s a good result yeah yeah yeah well thanks for watching guys and we’ll have more cars going up and over four passes soon for now this is case and Andre saying check out alf.com for the latest
And greatest an EV charging review see you guys next time ciao now let’s switch cars now all right good luck Andre good luck Andre I’m staying in the Blazer so a quick post note to this video I’ve had a pretty stressful day but there is some
Good news and that is that the car is charging slowly but the station is not charging me any money to fill up the battery so hey there is some uh good news after all free charge at least to 50% cuz I have to be here 205 minutes until full and
Yeah that’s a little longer than I want to spend the Y
