The 2024 Volvo XC60 Recharge is a mid-size plug-in hybrid crossover that aims to offer a luxurious driving experience with a focus on sustainability. The vehicle is designed with a stylish and upscale aesthetic, featuring a clean and elegant exterior complete with Thor’s Hammer headlights and vertical taillights. The interior follows suit, offering a blend of black Nappa leather and light wood inserts, although it does suffer from an overuse of piano black plastic around the touchscreen and shifter.
When it comes to performance, the XC60 Recharge is equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter I4 hybrid engine that delivers 455 horsepower and 523 pound-feet of torque. While its steering and suspension may not be the most engaging, the vehicle’s plug-in hybrid powertrain allows it to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds. This makes it faster than some of its competitors like the Audi SQ5 and Mercedes-AMG GLC 43.
On the tech front, the XC60 Recharge comes with a vertically oriented 9.0-inch touchscreen that runs on an Android infotainment interface. This system includes Google Assistant, Google Maps, and the Google Play store, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The Ultimate trim adds a 12.0-inch digital instrument cluster and a head-up display, as well as a 14-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system.
Comfort is another area where the XC60 Recharge excels. The vehicle offers a balanced ride that is neither too stiff nor too soft, making it comfortable for most driving situations. The Nappa leather seats are well-contoured and offer excellent adjustability, along with heating and ventilation in the Ultimate model. The cabin is also notably quiet, thanks to effective sound deadening that keeps wind, tire, and highway noise at bay.
Safety features are abundant in the XC60 Recharge, with Volvo’s advanced Pilot Assist safety suite coming standard on most trims. This includes stop-and-go traffic assist technology, lane-keep and lane centering, and adaptive cruise control. However, the system does have some room for improvement, particularly in terms of lane centering and braking behavior.
In terms of fuel economy, the XC60 Recharge offers 25 MPG combined and 57 MPGe, along with an electric-only range of up to 35 miles. While these numbers are decent, they are not particularly outstanding when compared to other plug-in hybrids in the market. It’s also worth noting that Volvo recommends using premium fuel for this vehicle.
Price-wise, the XC60 Recharge is not exactly a budget-friendly option. The Ultimate trim, which is the top-of-the-line variant, has a starting price of $68,245, and can go up to $74,690 when fully loaded. While it does offer a range of premium features, the price tag may be a sticking point for some potential buyers.
