Hello adventurers, my name is Diogo Guerra  and this is Offroad-off course! Today I’m going to test ride this beast here. She’s called Eva, and it’s an electric bike   it was born as a street bike and now  it has been converted to an off-road one

-So you want to know what what changed? -Yeah, please -Well the the front fork is from KTM 1090 Adventure, the inside is completely custom -Okay, with the the springs and the… -Everything. Different sized tires and spoke wheels -Mario did all the the crash bar the skid plates… -Ah, this is handmade?

This all all custom made, and also also the  the holder for the for the bags -These are really well done, they look stock! No, no…its all Mario! -Wow! this is Mario, the the engineer. (Portuguese): Wow, your bars look really nice!

The suspension… the shock is for this bike or was it adapted? Mario: It was made for the bike So we had to modify the spring because we had zero sag on the lowest setting, and that’s no good you know…

-Had a problem with the front as well, the other way around. -Ah…Too much sag? -Yes, too soft -You haven’t you haven’t seen my dog carrier yet. -You have a dog carrier? Of course you do… Okay guys I must admit I am a little bit scared because this thing weights quite a lot,

And it’s very tall so it’s not super balanced… this will be a challenge the pegs are small, they are like a street pegs as you can see uh so let’s see Lets see… EsseEsse Eva. Uaau… Okay, so…press this… uh… “Full front brake to enable the bike”? What the [Beep]?

(Nervous laughter) This is interesting, this  is interesting…. The bike is in sports mode which I think it’s like when it has more power The traction control is level 2, whatever that  means… uh, I assume there’s an ABS somewhere

But so far I have to say that it’s very easy to control. I’m using like 5 or 10% of the throttle but it’s very smooth… Its a “ride by wire” of course, there’s a lot of um engine brake (regenerativa braking)

Yeah like I can just let go of…I’m not breaking or anything, and the thing is keeping a steady speed down the the slope Let’s accelerate… Ua-ah-ah…Uau!! Jesus [Beep] Christ I used like 30% of the throttle and the front wheel came up maybe 10 cm off the ground… wow

And there’s a little bit of off road… The suspension.. ohohoh!… the bike feels very bouncy, like immediately I can feel that… yeah, there’s like a lack of traction, I’m I’m not feeling the bike planted at all. It’s like I have 5BAR on the wheels or something

I’m not feeling the bike… I’m having difficulty understanding if I have traction if I don’t have traction,  I don’t know what’s going on I know for a fact I cannot prevent this thing  from falling if I have to use my legs… that’s a bit enerving

So now the bike is in ECO mode, a little less scary And I lowered the pressure on the tires and I must say the tire pressure made a lot of difference! Now I feel that the wheels now have a bit of grip The Eco Mode feels like the bike is … I would say maybe 25-30 horsepower?  

The throttle was easy to control even in sport mode, but for the sake of letting me feel comfortable, this feels better I’m doing 40ks an hour 48…50…. Do we wait for Mario, maybe? I’m going to try the other mode now. Let’s see, Urban? Why not? Urban it is

I think that Urban mode is the power mode that makes more sense to me right now   in sports mode it feels like 150 horsepower,  so not very good for off-road Eco mode it’s like 30hp. Okay, but I can do more so I’m  going for urban mode…

The traction control does a good job like um not having any uh skidding problems the regenerative braking is working very well, like as soon as I go off the throttle the bike starts slowing down in a very smooth and predictable manner

Um I’m very surprised with how well the electronics are working, in general they are not getting  in the way I don’t miss the clutch, I don’t feel any problems controlling the throttle… I’m enjoying every second of this …Yeah like the suspensions have uh.. they work really well until they don’t!

Like on on that bump there I felt there’s something that… Hello! I just had a few situations where the suspension bottomed out so I’m going to… I increased the compression by uh 16  clicks, which is a lot but it was very low   it was like close to uh uh zero compression

So now the bike is supposed to feel a bit stiffer but less prone to bottoming out, which was a problem that I felt for instance here on this rut I think I’m getting the hang  of this like I’m uh…

So even without a clutch I’m being able to uh kind of  lift the front wheel just enough to go over obstacles oh still bottoming out. A bit better… 1-2-3-4-5-6… so now I think I have maxed the compression out…  The bike does not have a lot of a steering angle

Holy [bleep]… okay okay okay yeah okay I’ll try not to use my feet, if I have to I will Yeah yeah no Feet no Feet! Wow! My feet are dry! My feet are dry, Yepee Kay-yay!

So I feel this is still kind of the beginning of the day but I already have some conclusions, which are… This bike is about I think 280 kilos or 260 or something, so this is a heavy beast and it was not designed to be an off-road bike, they forced it to be an off-road bike,

And so there are some limitations in terms of uh suspension travel and whatnot things that Mario and Matias want to correct like they want to keep improving this bike And that being said I see nothing wrong about this bike being electric, I’m not feeling any  problems I don’t miss the clutch, I like the torque

I like the… the traction control is doing a very  good job it’s intrusive, it doesn’t let the bike power slide as much as I would want, but It’s doing a good job keeping me safe I love the the regenerative braking,

All I have to do is to go off the throttle for the bike to slow down in a very predictable manner like everything here has a lot of potential It sounds uh… there is a sound it still gives you a feeling of acceleration because the the pitch of that sound changes as  you accelerate

It does ZoooooooOOOOOOM it’s audible enough for you to have some feedback from the bike and Silent enough for you to enjoy the silence, basically Wow this has been quite an experience, and if you guys want to keep following what happens to this bike

Meet “Eva”, an electric motorcycle with 207nM (!!!!!!) modified to become an adventure bike of sorts!
I had the pleasure of testing it for a few hours, learn something new about EV bikes and share the experience with you 🙂

This project was done by Mathias (the owner) and Mario (the mechanic) and the results are here for you to witness 😛 I had a blast trying this thing and I have to say it increased my optimism regarding EV bikes, in general.
