2024 Ford Escape Plug in Hybrid PHEV Review

2024 Ford Escape Plug in Hybrid PHEV Review

Hi I’m Jeremy welcome to another episode of Live Wire review today we’re talking about the 2024 Ford Escape plug-in hybrid well let’s get into it well we’ll start off with a couple of the numbers this being a plug-in hybrid is a little bit different you’re looking at 6.3 L

Per 100 km on the Highway and about 5.6 L per 100 km in the city hybrids always get better mileage in the city because you have more options for regen and this being the plug-in hybrid this one actually offers 60 km of all electric range it’s quite a bit more than their

Earlier offerings like the cmax energy and the Fusion Energy they were hovering around 35 km worth of all electric range with 60 km of range you’ll be able to get a lot farther on that charge before you have to plug in I’m just going to mention a couple of features out here on

The outside you get LED headlamps and you got fog lamps up front your tire size 2256018 so it’s going to be very easy to find a winter tire that’s going to fit on here and they are a fairly large size so you’re going to get good ground

Clearance in the winter which is always handy there’s not much to look at here we got some black plastic cladding as all crossovers seem to have nowadays big mirrors so you can see everything chrome trim around the windows and you have your touch sensitive door handles so you

Don’t have to take your key out of your pocket to get in the vehicle always a nice touch now if I open the door here and open the window window there is single pane glass on this vehicle so it’s going to be a little bit noisier some of the other

Cars on the market that come with double pan glass but at this price point I’m not offended by this at all same in the back we got tinted windows in the back but not in the front which is always a nice thing on crossover Vehicles helps

Keeps the Sun out of the kids eyes well I’m here at the back end of the Ford Escape plug-in hybrid and I’m happy to say there’s 974 L of storage space here in the back end with the seats folded up and it comes standard with a power lift

Gate which is not true in all segments of this class and with the seats folded down there’s 1,721 L of space with the seats folded down now that’s pretty good now there is no tricy with the seats here there is no flip up seats in order to give you more

Room you get what you get the seats just fold flat and they have a slight upward curve to them there’s still a lot of room in there to fit everything you need I don’t think a trip to Ikea is going to be a problem in this car well it’s time

To do the back seat test we always try out the back seat and see if I fit I’m 6′ 1 in tall and there’s still about half an inch of room for my head in the back seat here one nice extra feature is that these are reclining seats and even

With the seats reclin back there is still room for my head the front seats have a little cutout for your legs so there is room for your knees anybody in the back seat of the Ford Escape is going to be very comfortable on a long trip what’s nice is there’s also a set

Of vents back here so they get Heating and there’s charging for their cell phones unfortunately I don’t see any heated seats back here but outside of of that it’s a pretty nice place to be well we’re under the hood now and it comes with a 2.5 L Atkinson 4 cylinder engine

That is running with multi-point fuel injection not direct fuel injection and it’s looking at 163 horsepower and 155 lbet of torque when you combine the engine and the electric motor together now as you know I’m a licensed technician and I’d like to talk about a couple of things under the hood here one

Of the best things about the hybrid Ford products is they actually use a dual motor system there’s only one clutch in this transmission is going to be a very very reliable setup my brother and my mother both drive a version of this we have the Fusion Energy in our family and

The cmax energy in our family and nothing has gone wrong with either one of those cars this is probably the most reliable drivetrain that Ford has ever produced in my humble opinion of course because using the ainson cycle engine there’s almost no work being done by the engine because of that Atkinson cycle

And with that two motor setup there’s nothing to wear out in the transmission this is not like the Dual clutch Transmissions that you normally see in a Ford Escape this one is going to be incredibly reliable there is one more thing I wanted to point out about this

Vehicle the fact that this one actually comes with a trailer hitch this vehicle is rated to tow 1500 lb most electrified vehicles on the market you’re hard pressed to find any tow rating I think a 1500 lb tow rating for a me mediumsized SUV like this is very very handy because

A lot of people tow just a small trailer to go to Home Depot and back and it really is helpful to have that towing capacity in electric fied car just before we head out on our test drive I just wanted to mention one more thing about this vehicle it is a front-wheel

Drive the plug-in hybrid version of the Ford Escape is a front-wheel drive only they don’t have an all-wheel drive system sorted out now I’m hoping to see in the future that they come out with maybe an electric motor in the back to give you all-wheel drive or maybe even a

Drive shaft setup just like the Hyundai Tucson offers but unfortunately at this time they do not offer that but it still gives an offered driving range of 771 km and I just wanted to to say thank you to Bourgeois Ford in Midland Ontario for Lending me this Ford Escape for this

Review you can give their sales team a call I’ll leave the phone number up on the screen okay we’re in the 2024 Ford Escape plug-in hybrid let’s go for a drive so I figured I’d just start off with some of the features in here obviously we come with an auto Demming

Rear view mirror we have heated seats a heated steering wheel and as I can see on the wind screen here we actually have a sound screen glass which is going to make it a lot quieter on your drive the sound system in here is by bang and

Olivon so you can guarantee a high quality sound from the stereo system in here and it comes with three position memory seats we have a large navigation screen here and we even have a digital cluster with a lot of information that you can customize to your liking

Including a heads up display now this heads up display is very similar to the one that I have in the Hyundai Kona it actually has a plastic sheet that comes up on the wind screen and that’s because the wind screen is a little small so

They can’t quite get it in your view but by putting that plastic sheet it actually brings it up into your vision there’s a host of safety Suites in here we have the radar guided cruise control we have blind spot monitors and we have the little thing that shows up on the

Mirror to show you when a car is in your blind spot which is something that Tesla does not have so as I’m driving along in here I’m noticing a couple of things about the car it is fairly quiet for what it is but I am noticing that the

Engine is a little louder than it is in some other cars I might just be used to driving electric vehicles all the time but I can definitely tell when when the engine has started in this and when you’re taking it off it is quite loud now that being said I’m always a

Stickler for the brake pedal in these cars I like it when a company can blend the regen braking with the mechanical brakes and I have to say Ford has done a really good job here when you put your foot on the brake you can feel that is

Doing regen but it’s not a harsh engagement when it switches over to the friction brakes good job Ford now most of the customer base that’s going to be looking at this vehicle has probably already owned a Ford Escape before they might have even had a Ford Escape Hybrid

I think this is the first time that we’re bringing the plug-in hybrid to the market now we already talked about the drivetrain in here but I still find it interesting that it’s a front-wheel drive it I know they don’t have the mechanical linkage already figured out

For the back of these vehicles but I would like to see an electric motor in the back of this just to give all-wheel drive I think you would be able to hit a much bigger base of customers if you could offer all-wheel drive in the plug-in hybrid

Model now as usual using cruise control in a Ford vehicle is very well sorted I found that their radar guided system works very well they also have Auto dimming headlights when you’re using the high beams which is very handy as noted before in the Ford Machi it does not Dim

When the vehicle is on the side but it does Dim when the headlights are facing you directly so being a family SUV the suspension is very well damped you can actually feel when you go over the bumps you don’t feel every single crack in the road it has really good damping over the

Soft bumps it doesn’t Corner crazy well because it’s not a sports car let’s be honest but it is really nice and comfortable it has a nice balance between cornering ability and softening up those bumps the visibility in here is very very good we have very large mirrors which is something that I’ve

Always appreciated on Ford vehicles I don’t have anything crazy in my blind spots it’s blocking my vision and you can see everything very well out of the wind screen and on my heads up display it’s showing me everything that I need to know right up front it has the speed

It shows a couple of op options it shows the current speed limit using GPS data and it shows the cruise control info and Ford comes with automatic headlamps as most Vehicles do nowadays but Ford is one of the only companies I’ve come across that when you turn on the wipers

It actually turns on the headlights for you I see so many cars driving around in the rain with their headlights off because everybody gets so used to automatic headlamps and it really does help when it turns on the headlamps when the wipers turn on that way you don’t

Have to think about it it’s a nice little convenience feature that some people seem to leave out and one thing I can appreciate over the ionic 5 is the fact that there is a rear wiper blade I always appreciate a rear wiper blade especially here in Canada now I’m

Noticing that there isn’t physical buttons for the climate control but if this is anything like the Macky everything you need is going to be up on the screen here your automatic climate control is very easy to find heated steering wheel your heated seats are all at the bottom of the screen I think

That’s just an OD to Tesla with how this these screens are going but it is very well laid out and you’re not hunting for the things that you need now the seats don’t have a lot of bolstering to them but again this is not a sports car but

They are very comfortable I believe a long road trip in this vehicle is going to be quite comfortable and you will not get tired of these seats they’re they’re quite nice it was going to be a very short test drive today we’re almost back at the dealership I’m just going to wrap up

My thoughts on this vehicle and let you know what I think stay tuned well we’re coming to the end of this video and I just wanted to wrap up my thoughts on the Ford Escape plug-in hybrid you can get this for about 49,100 $194 Canadian or 42640 American now in that price point

There are a couple other vehicles that you could consider for example the Tucson plug-in hybrid is available with all-wheel drive and around the same price point as this and it has almost the same efficiency numbers despite the fact that it’s all-wheel drive now the big elephant in the room is actually the

Mitsubishi Outlander that one offers up to 70 km of all electric range has a separate electric motor in the back for proper all all wheel drive that does not require a drive shaft and it offers up to seven seats the Ford escap plug-in hybrid the Tucson plug-in hybrid only

Come with five seats so there’s three vehicles you can consider the Escape plug-in hybrid the Tucson plug-in hybrid or The mitubishi Outlander Mitsubishi Outlander also offers a heat pump so make sure to check that one out when you’re Cross Shopping these vehicles well that’s it for this video if you
