Triple Battery Power & Color Options! EBC Model J Review – Customize To Your Liking!
I get emails and comments all the time they say I would buy whatever electric bike I happen to be reviewing but I wish it had a Twist throttle instead of a thumb throttle or I wish it had a torque sensor instead of a Cadence Sensor and
I’m here to tell you that you don’t need to pick between these choices when you purchase from electric bike company in this review we’re reviewing their moped style electric bike the model j I’m going to go through all the components then we’ll get into some firstperson riding footage see how it performs and
Then we’ll get into some third person riding footage where I’ll tell you why you should consider it maybe why you shouldn’t but first let’s take a closer Lu if you think this bike looks beautiful thank you because we picked out the colors or more precisely JT picked picked out the colors that’s what makes electric bike company unique is you can customize all their models but first let’s talk about price the model j starts at
$4.99 but at time of recording is on sale for $12.99 which is a great deal don’t forget to add shipping though but one of the benefits is your bike arrives via Freight which means no damage to the frame and it’s very easy to put together and that price isn’t what this one would
Cost because of course we made a bunch of modifications we’ll go ahead and throw on the screen the price if you wanted to buy this exact one but in reality your model j is going to cost however you decide to outfit it they have a really cool tool on their website
Even if you’re not buying I recommend you check it out but if you are buying why not support our efforts for free by using our affiliate link down in the description it’s a free and easy way to help support the channel and makes videos like this one possible thank you
So much for your support let’s talk geometry recommended Rider height between 5’3 up to 6’10 stand over height of 30 in though they do list a rear height of 33 in according to their geometry chart the bike has a 420 lb capacity and according to their website
Weighs just 51 lb to give you an idea of height I’m 6 ft tall and I can stand flat footed though the seat is touching my leg so this is how someone who’s 6 ft tall fits on the model j now that sizing is important and one of the reasons this
Is a taller moped style electric bike starts with the tires electric bike company didn’t just copy what every other company is doing going with 20x 4in tires nope they went with 24in by 3in street tires so they’re both bigger and not as wide as many of the tires we
Find on the market today and they are electric bike company branded and they do have puncture resistance stopping power is provided by tekro hydraulic disc brakes pair with 180 mm rotors the front tire is attached with a quick release lever and I need to pause here because we need to talk about something
Else that electric bike company is doing that no one else is doing their bikes are built in the United States as well as their wheels you can actually pick the colors of the wheels we went with black but you can also get silver they’re also using double walled rims
Stainless resistance spokes as well as brass nipples which means this bike is more rust resistant than almost any electric bike in the affordable category at the base price you get a rigid front suspension but we opted for a front suspension Fork 80 mm of travel and we
Had it painted black there’s a preload adjustment on the left lock out on the right here’s a look at what you can expect out of that front suspension Fork now you can get a front rack or a front basket which I do like what we wanted to show off the moped style
Headlight two different set settings cable management is nicely done and it all goes into the head tube right here some of the cables go into the frame on the left side this is the Lava Falls colorway that we went with on the frame and what’s cool is now you can look at a
Realistic preview they call it it’s a short video that you can really get an idea of how the paint’s going to look in different lighting which is great because if you’re pain for that extra amount you really want to know how your electric bike is going to look let’s
Jump into the cockpit starting up here with the handlebars these are the standard BMX style handlebars but again you can customize basically everything on this bike and there’s a bunch of different options diving into the cockpit these are the faux leather grips electric bike company branded you can
Also get rubber grips you can also get these in brown which would match the saddle these offerings are offered on many of their other electric bikes as well on the right side matching grip but we decide to go with a Twist CRI throttle because that’s our preference
But if you like a thumb throttle you can go with that as well really like these Tetro dado hydraulic disc brakes complete with motor cut offs plenty of stopping power on the right is also this light switch that I was showing you earlier on the left you get a
Horn now holding the pedal cyst up button is going to turn on the integrated lights now if you don’t get the rear rack this will be a little bit more visible but there’s the rear light hitting the brake does make it go brighter and then you have turn signals
Which is becoming standard on most moped style electric bikes these days the BMX style handlebars give you plenty of room for accessories like our cell phone mount check out shop. eik escape.com I want to show off this new display from electric bike company holding the power
Button on it does require you to accept EC’s terms and conditions unfortunately you cannot remove this screen hitting the pedal assist up button will allow you to to accept it and then hit the power button to confirm but check out all the information that you get on this
Screen you’ve got battery percentage in the top left hand corner pedal assist in the top middle 1 2 3 4 and five ride time in the top right hand corner and then this is where you have a lot of additional information we have power the amount of Watts Cadence current and of
Course current speed and you also have speed in the bottom left hand corner as well as controller temperature voltage odometer and trip when you turn the lights on there’s an indicator right here hold pedal assist up and yes there are some advanced settings in here very userfriendly to use there’s a user
Section where you can customize the standby backlight and the theme in parameters you can adjust the classification you do need a password for that and you will need to contact electric bike company to do so they will need the serial number on the back of your display and that’s likely why you’d
Be in here but you can also reset the odometer and the trip odometer but overall a very cool display you also get an adjustable stem which gives you even more adjustability than just moving the handlebars front or back helps you dial in the riding position to your comfort we’ve got electric bike company’s
Signature pedals with rubber for grip electric bike company cranks kickstand located right in the middle very large sturdy let’s talk battery because that is one of the standout features of this electric bike you can see we have one here but you can add not just one more
You can add two more and these are 14 amp hour batteries to remove I’m going to turn the key to the left slide out this is the shark style battery that we see on many electric bikes if you’re looking for a bag to store your battery
Check out our shop so 48 volt 14 amp hours 672 W hours and there is a power button here be sure you’re mindful of that if your bike’s not turning on it’s likely this button right here there’s also some indicator lights to put the battery back I’m going to line up the
Grooves slide into place turn the key and remove and just to note those additional batteries are $449 each the saddle is a nice banana style pretty firm there’s a look at the rear hydraulic disc brake keep in mind there’s no fenders available for the model j and as I mentioned we added this
Rear rack and it pairs perfectly with our big mama MC bag and the reason I wanted to talk about that is because most of the bikes have rear racks that are mck compatible that’s the attachment at the bottom of this bag and they even have a front rack
Now that is compatible with MC accessories and what’s nice is you set it on and then you can press it into place let’s open this up and talk about the anti- theft alarm system highly recommend this accessory because it’s just so nice to have an alarm and it’s
Already hidden on the bike so you don’t need to purchase an aftermarket one and it’s Extremely Loud and then of course if someone moves your bike [Applause] around so like I said so like I said Extremely Loud we also opted to check out electric bike company’s new optional toolkit they do
Give you some tools but then you get additional ones like a pump tire sealant as well as a CO2 cartridge some patches for a tire so that’s an option if you want to pick up some tools for your electric bike there’s a 750 W Motor in
The rear and you’ll note we went with the single speed variation though you can get it with gears though if you’re buying a moped style electric bike I don’t really see the point this is 18 teeth in the rear and a massive 56 to front chain ring and we went with the
Black chain guard to match the rest of the accents on this bike you can also customize the color of the chain ring you can go with silver you can also get that to match the handlebars again just super cool that you can customize everything and it is of way better
Quality than we typically see let’s not forget about the charger this is electric bike company’s charger has a fan 48 volt 4 amp output which of course is nice if you’re charging up three batteries on this bike there’s min minimalistic branding around the bikee top plate right here electric bike
Company on the frame made in the United States sticker I don’t know why you would but you could also put a torque sensor on this electric bike though that’s likely something that you’d only want on some of their other Cruiser style electric bikes so we know this
Bike looks amazing but how does it perform let’s get into some firstperson riding footage all right I’m excited to take you on a ride on the model j because this moped style ebike is quite a bit different from a lot that that we see on the market today pretty easy for
Me as a 6ft tall rider to get my leg over now we did opt for the single speed version so I will talk a little bit about pedaling after our throttle only test just to note I did go into the advanced settings and changed it into
Off-road mode so it lets you select from class one class 2 class three or off-road I figured everyone would want to see the top performance of this bike give it is a moped style electric bike our first test will be throttle only and again we have the right hand twist grip
Throttle but you can go with the thumb throttle if you’d prefer and the pedal assist levels do coincide with how much throttle power you get I did a PLL recently on YouTube and a majority of you said that you don’t like that you just want full access to the throttle so
Maybe that’ll be helpful to electric bike companies who are looking to decide how they want to to control how the throttle works I have the speedometer at by cool NYX on my bracket mounted elasto case for our GPS speed I’ll compare that to the electric bike company display all
Right here we go throttle only 3 2 1 here we go I would say a very gentle takeoff this is not one that’s just going to jolt you like other moped style electric bikes getting up to speed there 1819 according to the electric bike company display looks like the GPS had
To get caught up up 24 M hour now keep in mind this bike does come Shi as a Class 2 electric bike with a top speed of 20 mph whether you’re pedaling or using the throttle again this is overridden in off-road mode and it looks
Like it is going to hold me at 26 mph and we are pulling just over 800 WTS I have to say this display is very impressive I really like all the features it allows you to see the wattage and you can scroll through all of them like I talked about in the walk
Around footage now let’s go into the various pedal cyst levels so now I’m in pedal level 4 getting about 700 Watts looks like we’re getting around 20 mph 23 all right and then if we go down from there pedal sis level Three and it looks like it might be speed limited because the motor didn’t kick in until I got to I don’t know around 15 M hour so pulling just shy of 500 watts going about 18 mph let’s go ahead and pedal this level two again don’t feel the
Motor yet or hear it or even see the wattage displayed we’ll see how slow we have to go here there go around 12 12 mph using 200 or so Watts 250 getting close to 300 holding me at 15 mph and of course pedal assy level one I’ll just slow down here again very
Gentle 7 8 miles an hour and I can I can actually hear the motor you might be able to as well that the motor is just kicking off once it’s hitting the I don’t know 9 10 m hour uh Mark seems like the display is matching
The GPS which is always nice all right now let’s go into the various pedal assy levels though with moped style electric bikes some people do pedal them but I find that if you’re buying a bike like this it’s just more fun to use the throttle if you want a bike that you can
Pedal buy one of the other electric bike company electric bikes with the pedal Forward Design is just going to be so much more comfortable all right here we go all did give me like 500 watts right to start and then it kind of planed off right
Away again hitting that 9 mil an hour and I don’t know if you can see with the GoPro but my knees are coming up really high of course I can scoot back a little bit which makes it more comfortable but then I would need to adjust the
Handlebars a little bit of course there is some nice customization there’s 16 mph PSIs level two let’s go into three 18 19 M hour 20 still giving me power I think that’s where it’s going to kick off right around there all right let’s go pedal sis level 4 getting about 700 Watts so yeah you can pedal It but there are some unique things about the geometry of this bike that really starts with the 24in tires most moped styley bikes have 20-in tires obviously a lot smaller bring you low to the ground and then that affects the entire bike these are a little bit
Taller all right holding us at 23 let’s go ahead and go into pelis level five there we go getting full power I imagine we’re going to hit the same top speed and let’s test out these Tetro Dorado brakes right at this crossing sign the roads are a little bit wet so
I’m going to be a little bit more careful than I otherwise would there we go and very short stopping distance I was kind of getting close to locking up the rear tire felt it skidding a little bit bit but these brakes plenty capable so as I was
Saying ridewise on this bike I do have the adjustable stem all the way forward and I would probably adjust the handlebars maybe a little further back my hands as you’ll see in the third person riding footage are almost parallel or my arms are almost parallel
So it’s a little bit more of a different riding position compared to other moped style electric bikes though I do like that you can customize it that can’t be said on others in the category but even on the GoPro footage I’m sure you’re seeing a lot of the
Cockpit here where uh on some other bikes you wouldn’t be able to see quite as much so it’s a different seating position you’re not really over the handlebars you’re kind of rela in a more relaxed position all right enough talking let’s see what this bike can do
Up our Hill Climb test all right Hill Climb test this is the hill that I test out all the electric bikes that I review on the channel so you can compare and contrast the GoPro makes it look so much smaller than it is so put up a picture
As well as the specs of the hill and we’ll get up to speed before the hill Starts Now for a motor that’s peeking right around 850 or so Watts not expecting any amazing in performance I do think it will get up on throttle alone all right Hill starting 16 mil an hour
15 slowing down from here 13 12 11 10 and it looks like 10 m hour is going to be the minimum speed up this hill and it shows we’re pulling 830 Watts the controller temperature is reading 116 we’re at uh 48 volts and the batter is 88% I did fully charge it before I
Test it out or started the first person riding footage all right we’re at the top minimum speed of 10 m hour so it’s certainly not going to win any races up our Hill Climb test though it might win some looks competitions let me know in the comment section below all right with
That let’s get into some third person riding footage and I’ll give you my concluding thoughts on the electric bike company model j the model j is not your typical moped style ebike and that’s a bit refreshing to see as many in this category prioritize monster Motors sometimes with unrestricted Motors that
Just ignore what classifies as an ebike the model j takes a back a notch with its 750 W Motor that’s still capable it’s just not going to Rocket you to its top speed which will be welcome to those who like a more accessible ebike who
Might want to share it with a friend or family member but yes as we saw the top speed can still be overridden and it can reach high speeds up to around 26 mph now that we’ve got that out of the way let’s talk price yes we went to a little
Crazy outfitting this one but the current $12.99 price for the base model is a great deal when you look at others in this price point and don’t worry you can still pick from 28 standard colors without adding to the price tag pick your throttle type thumber twist rims
Tire color handlebar style trim color grip style and colors of the seat and grips plus you’re getting higher quality components with EBC thanks to their attention to detail and us-based assembly me saying that is one thing but it’s something you can only appreciate in person also comparing this to over
100 ebikes we’ve reviewed gives us some context and EBC goes above and beyond here for those super users you’ve got the option for up to three 14 amp hour batteries up to 42 amp hours of capacity which is just a ton the included single 14 amp hour battery is about average
Sized though should be sufficient for riding around town the single speed gearing is better than you’ll find on most moped Sal bikes if you plan to Pedal this at all I love EC’s new LCD display which honestly gives you more information than you need but I’ll always take more than less probably the
Biggest consideration here is size the 24x 3in wide tires are set up for street riding but given they are taller paired with a non-adjustable seat means this ebike isn’t going to fit every Rider I’m 6 ft tall for reference and I won’t complain about no included fenders but
It would be nice to have some offered as an optional accessory you know for those of us that aren’t lucky enough to live in a coastal city where it’s mostly sunny if we’ve helped you decide that the electric bike company model j or any other ebike we’ve featured on the
Channel is the right one for you we’d appreciate it if use our links down in the description before you make your purchase it’s free and only takes a second thanks in advance the model j takes nods from their Cruiser style ebike Heritage and applies it to a moped
Style ebike that looks great is fully customizable and is offered at a surprisingly low price let us know what you think in the comment section below what EBC model would you like to see us review next thanks for watching and I’ll see you in the next One
