Charging the 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale PHEV On Public Networks! Does it Work?

Charging the 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale PHEV On Public Networks! Does it Work?

Good morning everyone you join me in the Alpha Romeo tonali obviously we’re in the US and since it is in the US we only have the plug-in hybrid Alpa Romeo tonali available here really like this interior too with his cool seats with this little red Alpha Mayo stitching on

There all the fun stuff but we are at an electrifier America station the same electrifier America station here in Westchester County New York that I take almost every plugin hybrid that I get um to try to charge at the level two charger with varying levels of success sometimes free sometimes paid um so

That’s just the situation with electric fire America on themselves but let’s go see how this thing charges up we have around 10 Mi of range right now and we can check out our information here in the E hybrid Pages let’s check out our power flow so

We have nothing’s going on here you can see different energy modes I like to see that we have our driving history here really cool you can see our regeneration um accumulated and kilowatt hours gained which pretty nice distance traveled so it’s really cool information here on

Your e hybrid Pages you can see how the eave mode works you can have it in save or charge mode change your charge settings we’re at 41% state of charge for this battery pack here on a level one charger says around almost 6 hours and 12 minutes and level two charging

Only an hour and 23 minutes which is really isn’t too bad thankfully because Alf foro When developing this vehicle they put in a decently powerful enough um onboard charger unlike the kyral plug and herit which I just had which was so violently slow it was just embarrassing

Here you can see we have 10 Mi of r range as quoted on the dash right here I love this little dial in the center that kind of gives you your charge and power meter 67 M of range on gas I may have to fill up in general as well 77 mil in

Total here’s our combined range I like how they give you that figure as well here’s our drive mode selector right here real quick I love the AL for Mayo badge right there so a is essentially your EV mode Advanced efficiency natural or normal mode you’re really going to be

In kind of a normal Blended driving mode kind of hybrid driving but prioritize EV mode I’ve noticed Noti though um it still is pretty nice D is your Dynamic mode here you can change your damper settings engine will kick on it will prioritize the engine it will actually

Charge the battery because the engine always stays on which is kind of cool so it’s kind of like an eave mode you can check out your power flow meter here you can see that the engine is on and we’re actually charging the battery by around

3 Kow which is pretty cool actually um I also like how they show you the draw that the climate will have on the powertrain and the battery system which is nice um I love this little flow chart here showing you everything that’s going on so let’s plug this thing in and see

What kind of numbers we’re pulling out okay guys so the charging port on the tonali is actually on the driver’s side so we’ll come over here and it should already be unlocked with the vehicle popping this open it does pop right open right here a charging indicator lights in here and some other

Information nice little cap here as well I think you can just want to leave it somewhere it looks like it works here is our plug level two just a regular J 177 out it and hopefully this level two charger will fit all the way across over

Here sometimes oh this seems to be long enough ah look at that they thought about this in advance I’m going to plug this in and let’s see what happens okay guys so we have a wonderful issue here so this member TAP card thing is not working of course on this electri

Prime America charger and I think their network is down today so I can’t even use the app to pay for it so I have to use my card to pay here and they put like a $50 charge on your card not too bad of a kilowatt hour rate it’s a

Little bit expensive 56 cents per kilowatt hour but we are charging now which is nice we can come over to the tonali it’s plugged in we have a little battery indicator light flashing there little plug light here which is kind of nice as well looks really nice love this

Little alfo electrified logo here with their snake that’s a really cool touch and it is also green very subtle though which I like let’s go hop inside see what our Dash is telling us plugged in and charging we have estimated time of an hour and 23 minutes

Which is not too bad um we have our little logo here pulsating I think that’s a really cool look and we have a nice status bar on the bottom showing us our percentage and we are plugged in so it’s nice plugged in and charging let’s

See what happens if we try to turn on the vehicle to an accessory mode turns on I don’t know if it likes it though so it knows that it’s charging and if we go over to our e hybrid page here we can see that it’s pulling about 5 KW from

This charger now I believe this level two charger here is a maxing out at around um 7 kws I know this thing has a much larger onboard charger so it can draw more power I believe um than just 7 Kow it might be a little over 7 Kow

Honestly um so I wish it’ be a little bit faster but that’s not bad at all again way better than the Kia that I just had which is a bigger vehicle which had less power than this and was only pulling around 3 and 12 Kow and I know

These are plugin hybrids they me to be charged at home overnight but if you want to just plug up and get some juice in a quick situation you don’t need to fast charge but just a decently sized onboard charger is fine and this is perfect for this let’s see if we can

Turn the vehicle completely on plugged in and charging so our air is on now if you notice our climate controls on which I can turn off it is still plugged in and charging what I find pretty interesting though now you see 9 miles of rain so we

Actually lost a mile which is weird um it’s not showing any energy flow now that the vehicle was on let’s see if we go back to the page e hybrid that’s interesting so we’re still plugged in and charging as indicated on the dash but it’s not showing it there

Anymore so let’s just turn off the vehicle I’ll let it do its thing I’m going to go grab some coffee and we be back just in a little bit to see our status okay guys we’re going to end up charging now it’s really busy at this EA

Station and we are at 81% now so we’ve got a lot of charge actually in here 33 minutes so 100% but we don’t need to go to 100% right now so let’s go end charging and see how easy this process is you can do it from the charger or

From the plug right here I believe I can just pull it out yeah that’s super simple and we going go pop this back into the charge cord see our session fee it’s only $288 yeah not too bad 5 kwatt hours have been delivered to the car and we can

Just go close that all up really simply let little cap here and we can go about on our way pretty nice here pretty easy to use and when we turn on the tonal should give us a nice amount of indication we’ve now we now have 26 miles of EV range to head off

With

For my final review of 2023, let’s have a look at the all new Tonale Veloce PHEV! With eAWD, sharp styling, impressive technology, and hot incentives, I predict the Tonale is going to be a hot seller in the US throughout 2024. But is everything perfect here? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

🏁 @Alllcarnews Spec Sheet:
-1.3L Turbo Inline-4 (180HP, 199 lb-ft of torque)
-Rear AC Motor (121HP, 184 torque)
-285HP, 347 lb-ft of torque Combined
-15.5kWh battery pack, 33 miles EV Range
-7.4 kW charger
-6-Speed Auto (Front wheels only)/ Rear Direct drive
-0-60MPH under 5.5seconds
🏁

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Highs:
-The Tonale is a hot looking little SUV with gorgeous wheels, painted gloss black trim, dynamic body lines and iconic Alfa wheels
-The PHEV powertrain was shockingly good with strong EV range, quick LVL2 charging.
-The adaptive dampers do wonders for the experience.

Lows:
-The seating position is way too high and can be uncomfortable for some, large A-pillars.
-The driving dynamics are OK, but it doesn’t feel particularly sporty, you can feel the extra weight over a gas Dodge Hornet, higher center of gravity.
-Interior is nicely appointed and quality has vastly improved over preproduction models though some materials could be more premium vs a BMW X1, Mercedes GLA, and seats need more support.

Overall I liked the Tonale for what it is. It may not be a Giorgio platform Alfa, but it’s a nice stopgap before the brand goes full EV.

7.8/10
