“Tacoma X-Runner Concept”: SEMA Build Episode 2 | Toyota

“Tacoma X-Runner Concept”: SEMA Build Episode 2 | Toyota

On the heels of the launch of the 2024 Tacoma, we want to show that we’re not done here. And we think that there is just incredible enthusiasm around the Tacoma product, and this is just the beginning. There’s a lot of things that make the all new Tacoma adaptable to various lifestyles.

Between the different cab configurations, the off-road packages, the on-road packages. This is just another way that Tacoma can be utilized that we hadn’t explored yet. There is something really exciting about the SEMA builds cause you know it’s a bunch of people in a garage

A big garage, but a garage building a car still. More than just building a one-off vehicle that could be done at any given shop we wanted to do something, I think that was more I’ll say realistic and while this is still certainly a concept. It’s a highly functional proof of concept,

And really something that we could even imagine some day hopefully even commercializing. Our superpower here, at least within our engineering team has been passion, and everybody has been super passionate about the product. I am extremely excited to be able to work on something very cool.

It’s always been a dream of mine being in the Prototype Group to work on those, outside of the box type projects. We are taking the raw styling data from Calty Design and we’re making some of the larger components. The dry area is where we do the powdered nylon

And so the parts are grown inside and the laser cures that powder into a hard surface. Then our guys break the parts out of that cake. Those parts are then stitched together to make the full assemblies. The wet lab area, the parts are basically cured in the vat of liquid resin.

When that part is finished, the entire plate pulls up out of the liquid resin and you’re able to see all of the parts on the build plate. So finally, we take those parts after they’re done washing and move them into our finishing room.

The finishing area is where we do the assemblies of all the components, and sanding and polishing of the parts before paint. One of the first things that that’s really kind of important, is just the scope of the parts that we’re making. When we’re talking about the entire rear end of the vehicle.

Those parts are 6 to 8ft long in some cases. When you have this convergence of incredible designers, who have a passion for creativity. and then from the marketing side, we get to introduce these vehicles to the world and get some feedback that we can use for not only marketing campaigns

But for future vehicles. So for me, that’s one of the reasons I love SEMA. Everybody’s geeked out to be there, and we’re equally or more excited to show them our vehicles. So today at the shop, we’re working on final preparations for all the parts that we’ve already sanded.

We got the cab in the booth. We did our final scuffing on the hard to reach parts. We got everything else prepped and ready for paint. In working with the Marketing Group, they really wanted something that would hearken back to the blue and it looks amazing

Paired with the satin black, and the red detailing. We use the red very sparingly, just to give it a little bit of accent. So we’ve got it in pieces, but overall all the color has been applied to the vehicle itself. So what we’ll be looking at today,

Is that final buff and polish of those components. So that we can get that nice shine when it’s at the show. Really excited to see what this looks like in person. We’re starting to see it come together. We got the pieces that are being fabricated and and manufactured in different areas.

We’re doing some fitments right now. It’s always better when we can have concepts that we can show the public to say ‘hey what do you think? What do you like? What don’t you like?’ because typically we do focus groups or we show photos

But this X-Runner concept gives us the opportunity to say, what if? and what do you think?
