2023 Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid SX Touring | $35.53 to Drive 510 Miles

Hey Gearheads and welcome to garage talk I’m Corey and this well this is a gateway to full electrification from the Kia brand this is the 2023 Kia Nero plug-in hybrid electric vehicle in the SX touring trim this thing really is efficient and in this video we’re going

To run all the numbers take you on a quick tour to show you just how well this vehicle is put together stay tuned yes Gearheads this really is the best of both worlds because not only do we have a 1.6 L 4 cylinder under the hood we

Also have an electric motor that can run independently of the gas engine uh because we have an 11.1 KW lithium ion battery that makes this thing good for an up up to 33 Mi of all electric range before this gas motor even kicks in but

As I normally do we’re going to go ahead and pop the hood and take a look at this 1.6 L uh tur non-turbo four cylinder under the hood and we’ll talk numbers in total system numbers here because like I said this is a front-wheel drive plug-in

Hybrid system that does use a 11.1 KW hour battery and this 1.6 L non-turbo 4-cylinder to give us 180 combined horsepower which is pretty stout for a small hatchback like this and 195 lb feet of torque it is all made to a six-speed dual clutch automatic transmission you only get front-wheel

Drive and the Nero if you do want all all-wheel drive from Electric uh from Kia you’re going to have to look at that ev6 uh or the forthcoming ev9 or the potential of the EV3 and ev4 that we saw at the LA Auto Show uh but

Yeah this is a fairly good uh powertrain combo we’ll talk more about it when we get under uh get behind the wheel but I do want to talk a little bit about the economy of this thing because that’s really why you’re buying it so you can

Go as I mentioned earlier up to a 33 or 34 miles on all electric uh range before the gasoline engine even Chimes on K claims 33 Mi the EPA claims 34 uh we’ve seen 33 every time we’ve topped this off to a full charge which means you can

Drive the full EPA estimated 510 miles of gas and electric of this vehicle on $35.52 for comparison’s sake I drive a 10-year-old Chevy Cruise Eco with a manual transmission that is my daily car it would cost an estim estimated $55.20 to drive that same amount of distance in fact the EPA estimated

Annual fuel cost is half of what uh the estimated fuel cost is for my cruise Eco all that can be found at fueleconomy.gov as we close the hood now would be a good time to actually tell you the vehicle is running uh it is an EV mode so the gas

Engine is off I’ve only really had the gas engine on a couple of times and that was basically for accident we’re going to do a little bit more with it today in the test today uh just to see what it’s like under hard acceleration things like that but yeah

Generally the gas engine has been off the entire time we’ve had this one as we take a look at the styling of this as with many Kia products it does look very different than other products on the road that goes with these LED running lights and turn signal signals that kind

Of follow in uh the K5 style language here uh K5 has got what they call the heartbeat running lamp this has got a very similar though it looks a little more digital when it comes to uh the overall blockiness of it but you can see we’ve got LED lights all the way around

Up front including LED fog lights this one is just a really classy look uh especially in this mineral blue paint job with all the black since uh that surround this one and we’ll get more around to it here in just a little bit coming to the wheels and

Tires as I mentioned this is a front-wheel drive only platform fortunately if you do want electric all-wheel drive uh from Kia you’re going to have to go to the ev6 that’s going to be your entry point into that but these uh wheels are very nicely styled very uh

Cool look to them they aren’t overly Eco which I really like and um and they are wrapped in Continental Pro contact tires these are 22545 R1 18in tires wrapped around these 5-spoke 18-inch wheels very nice I like it a lot you can see we’ve got uh we’ve got disc brakes up front

Here very nice look and then as we pull out and look at the entire vehicle very sporty look to this vehicle uh including this Black Blade behind the rear doors that really Mak makes me think of the Audi R8 so Kia designers have been going very bold with their designs and their

Concepts and I I just love that they’re stealing from Vehicles like the Audi R8 a freaking hyper car superar however you want to Define it uh for this fun family vehicle so just a nice look you can see we also get some additional black clading down low I do believe officially Kia

Classifies this an SUV but really this is a hatchback sedan let’s be honest what it really is the Black Blade back here is also a a metallic black so it’s not a just a gloss black PL paint it is a metallic black but it is plastic so

Just something you know uh these are magnets we put them on all our vehicles uh that we test so yeah that’s why this isn’t on that blade right there because it is well plastic and as we look right here you can actually see there is air pass through going through here I can

Actually see daylight through there I’m trying to get on the camera uh to display but as we come around to this blade style tail light and look just past it you can see this is where the air passes through so we do have some active or excuse me we do have some

Static air uh passrs on this uh just go with the aerodynamic efficiency of what is supposed to be a rather efficient vehicle I really like it Kia’s just doing some really cool stuff as we come back here to the back we do get those blade style tail lights you can

See our turn signals are LED but they’re down low they do mimic the uh turn signals up front that kind of little check pattern that we have and then we have a very large very wide uh Center High mounted stop lamp on the rear spoiler back here we get a wiper back

Here we get that phev badge and starting with the 2023 models all Kia has got the same font uh for their vehicle name so that is one way to tell Vehicles apart 2022 to 2023 is that new script on the uh badging for the vehicle name this is

A power hatch because I have the vehicle running I can’t show off the smart hatch system but uh with the key in your pocket you can just stay stand behind the vehicle it’ll give you three beeps and then the hatch will open by itself no need to kick or dance back behind the

Vehicle uh to get the hatch open makes it very easy for when your hands are full one of the downsides of this plug-in hybrid electric vehicle is they had to put that 11.1 uh Kow hour battery somewhere and that somewhere is back here under the rear storage so most Kia

Products that we have tested you get this dual level uh floor back here in the back that you can lift up drop down do all kinds of things with to get a little bit more space back here that is not the case I’ll go ahead and show you

Underneath our carpeted floor mat uh we do have this little handle right here but yes this is where our battery is you can see no spare tire either on this one so we can’t drop this down we can’t uh get any additional storage but there’s a little bit of storage around uh back

Here in the back you can see that’s where the Kia Supply charge cable is this can charge 110 or 240 and they claim uh on a uh household style 240 plug it’ll charge in just under 3 hours uh we have not depleted it but I can say that’s a pretty accurate

Guesstimate uh just from our time with it the review of this plug-in hybrid vehicle is brought to you by electron EV Chargers this v-buck 4 48 amp unit was supplied To Us by electron even comes with this Nifty J hook for hanging the cord and storing the j1772 plug so that

Uh when we are not currently plugging in and charging a vehicle it stores very conveniently right here you can learn more for yourself in the link down in the description below charging started I will note we have a 60/40 split bench rear seat here we do have top tethers

All the way across you can see it is hidden uh from this slit in the back here uh also want to call out I do a full car seat install but we’ve got Tucker’s top tether in here and we’re not doing any major damage to the seat

But you might be thinking these are reclining seats you can see right here these very much look like they should recline but again because of the packaging back here with the battery and everything these seats don’t recline so yet another casualty of the plug-in hybrid platform uh these seats are stationary when it

Comes to uh sitting position but they do fold rather flat and you have to do that from back here or from the side uh that is the only place that you can actually flip and fold those but you can see fairly nice uh extension to your load

Floor it is uh flat as we look across back here and uh according to Kia we do have 19.4 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and if you fold them both flat you get 54.6 which is a decent amount you can see Kia does a lot with the space here

We’ve got a very wide opening hatch and uh just a large cargo area in general so decent amount of space here in this uh compact car hatchback however you want to classify it like I said I do believe Kia technically uh calls this an SUV and

Their lineup one last thing I’m 510 this is the hatch opening just about 6 feet you can see the power button is up here you can uh open and close this from the key fob but pretty easy just to push and close it from there it gives you a few

Beeps before gently closing it down on you before we get in this one I do want to show you the key it is your typical Kia Detonator style key you can see all the buttons are here on the side I really like the Detonator style lock

That folds our power mirrors in uh just to let you know that the vehicle is locked we do also get remote start right there no smart park or anything like that it is a proximity key so you can keep it in your pocket your purse wherever you keep it but since we’ve now

Got the vehicle off I did want to show you the smart access lift gate again the key is in my pocket I am just standing back here and it’s not going to work because there we go I was standing Too Close gives us a few beeps and the hatch opens very nice very

Convenient especially if you got your hands up full with groceries luggage whatever the case may be and then once you get it all loaded push that button to close it this is a passive entry system on the front doors so to lock it you just push that little spot right

There to unlock it you put your hand on the back you can see that unlocks all four doors as we currently have it set up and you can open the vehicle up and get in very easily interesting design here on the Nero we’ll talk a little bit about the

Doors before hopping in and you can see we do have two person memory seats for the driver here and this waterfall style control panel here on the side uh which gives you a very interesting little storage pocket right here it’s very shallow right here but very deep on this

Side and it does make all these buttons very easy to see and operate but it’s just an interesting placement not good not bad just interesting we do have Express up down on the front uh but not on the back here and since we do have

Two person of memory I can talk about we do have power seats up here with two-way lumbar unfortunately the passenger seat is a full manual seat these are the synex synthetic leather seating surfaces these are heated they are ventilated and they work very well both heat and ventilation it’s very obvious

When you have it on works very well gets nice and toasty or nice and cool depending on your setting um just have that in the back of your mind uh one thing I don’t particularly like about the design here is while you do have this waterfall style design you

Get a lot of gloss black plastic I mean a lot of it so this entire panel here gloss black and it goes all the way down the door so the full length of the door is covered in gloss black plastic you can see we’ve got a bunch of

Fingerprints already there are a few scratch marks uh because this vehicle has been in a press Fleet for just about a year now uh just over 11,000 mil on this one so you can see a little bit of how it wears over time we’ll get in

Close the door and uh we’ll go ahead put our foot on the brake start it up very uneventful startup again gas engine is off no need for it because plugin hybrid electric you can see uh right now we did drive it about 10 Mi to our current location from home we’ve got

23 Mi of electric r range and based on how it has been driven 392 estimated miles of range on gas only for a total of 415 as it currently sits again the EPA estimates it at a 510 total range depending on how you drive it again

Based on how it has been driven so far those are the estimates that it is giving us this digital gauge cluster is very similar to the one we saw in the Kia Soul in that these are yes they’re digital but they aren’t very customizable you get a very Casio like

Uh digital readout here for your RPMs and your speed that really is the only thing that changes here you can change the color of uh the surround uh with different Drive modes I’ll show you that in a second but really this Center section is the only customizable spot so

You’ve got these uh section these buttons and controls right here on the steering wheel where you can actually page through a few different things you can see sensor refueling uh We’ve driven this 42.2 Mi it’s been on for 3 hours and 20 minutes we’re averaging 589 mes

Per gallon so you can tell Yes the gas engine has come on a couple times which is messing up that bottom number there uh but all around it has been a very fun very efficient vehicle for us you can see we’re still at full and we’re pretty

Good on our electric range here uh before we get too far into all of this I did want to continue across over here so just a very interesting look again with this waterfall that comes down the side now that we’re sitting in here we get some more gloss black plastic here nice

Air vent that does a good job of getting the air to you and then your brightness controls for your gauge cluster it goes all the way up to 100 so you can adjust a lot your hatch button your fuel door open uh charging timer here and then

Your traction control are all over your left knee coming across you can see we’ve got twin 10 and 1/4 in displays again that one’s not so customizable except for the middle but this is your typical Kia infotainment system uh with a 10 and 1/4 in screen it does have

Wired Apple carplay and Android auto lots of uh fun stuff in here very responsive I’m going to go ahead and put it here on the pH screen because it gives you a nice readout of your battery state of charge where your batter or where your power is coming from from

Going to Etc you can see we’re at 78% of charge on just over 10 mil of driving 23 miles left to go but uh fun information right there this is a split screen so you can slide that over you can customize what’s over here uh by swiping

Up and down so nice touch nice and customizable if you’ve been in any Kia product lately and then we get to my least favorite thing here what are you doing why do you keep putting these in more and more of your products it h just why okay right here down here your

Infotainment controls your climate controls are on this dual mode screen here I get it you have let me know from our Sportage videos you can program it to do many different things to be more user friendly but why okay okay you can see we’ve got two dials right here

Volume and tuning I hit this button right here now we’ve got our dual dual mode climate controls up here so you have to remember what screen you on when you reach down for this knob yes I know you can change the volume on the steering

Wheel uh right here sorry uh yes I know that you can just leave it on climate controls and change I I get all that my question is why we’ve been in other vehicles that have a decluttered um Dash and they don’t use this dual mode I I just don’t

Understand why we are complicating the controls for things that you use very regularly there’s just this slight hesitation in my mind every time I reach down for this knob it’s on climate or is it on volume like it shouldn’t have to be this way you you are complicating things that drivers use

Frequently stop it find a better way Kia quit putting this in more and more of your products and I know I know is coming to the Kia ev9 I know you are putting it in all your future products find a better way please that is the biggest Achilles heal of this vehicle

And pretty much all your vehicles I really do like Kia products I just don’t care for this this is my least favorite thing I I would get used to it I know many uh owners have chimed in it’s just not my favorite it seems completely unnecessary I don’t like it that’s just

Me rant over we do get more gloss black plastic up here with customizable ambient lighting up here very nice my wife’s got down pink she’s been driving this more than I have cuz I’ve been out of town I really like the use of materials so this is a softer injection

Molded plastic but it’s got this nice texture to it uh that just gives a lot of visual interest to the front of the vehicle and then just the overall kind of Spacey design of this with those waterfall uh door pools and door controls it’s a nice look very modern

Look in here uh that is really unlike many other vehicles on the market we do get the steering wheel from the Kia ev6 so all your typical Kia controls up here uh including your volume controls uh your lane keep assist your full adaptive cruise control things like that so I

Like that a lot we do get paddles on the back of the steering wheel that uh you don’t have full one pedal driving in this uh but you can pull on this minus for uh brake regenerative braking and it will slow you to a complete stop but

I’ll show you more of that when we’re actually driving as we move down here we do have a USBC for power only usba for Wired interface with the Apple carplay we have a chi wireless charger here that surprisingly my wife set her iPhone 13 down on this as it currently sits and it

Was wirelessly charging even through the or over this wire that it was on and she doesn’t even have a MAG safe compatible uh phone case so just something to knowe pretty good Chi wireless charger in this one we get a rotary dial shifter in this

One uh which I’ve gotten used to in my time in Kia products again he did and ventilated front seats and like I said they work very well heated steering wheel as well I will say Kia does not remember that you had these on if you

Turn the vehicle off and back on I I feel like that’s something that could be updated in software it’s a minor nitpick but it is definitely something that could be updated and would make this vehicle even nicer to own it can’t be updated more gloss black plastic all of

The gloss black down here again fingerprints smudges things like that you do get an auto break hold in traffic you have an EV mode button right here so even though we are in eco mode you can make sure uh that it’s in EV you can see

I’m now in full hybrid mode so the gas engine turned on and then we can go to Electric mode that gas engine’s going to run just a little bit just so it doesn’t come on to immediately turn off you can see our power flow right there parking

Sensor button here and then a camera button we don’t get 360 cameras in this but we do have parking sensors all the way around so uh we do have decent visibility uh when parking in tight spaces but you only get a rear parking camera with trajectory here in this one

So I like that you also get that when you put it in reverse put it back in park and we go back to our screen here electronic parking brake down here and then some space saving cup holders that give you just this wide open storage space if you don’t need cup holders and

Then you can deploy them here there are no low grippers in these for if you have smaller items than this cup holder opening so a bottle of water would rattle around in this not my favorite uh Kia could do a little bit better on that and then just all the Open Storage in

This this does pull out so you really can’t have just open storage all the way across in this it’s not my favorite uh because it does just feel a little too open and exposed but it does offer quite a bit of storage in addition to the chi

Wireless treasure here glove box is nice it’s damped as you could see but not lined with felt’ got a lot of stuff in there but uh holds it fairly nicely front here we get a auto dimming rear viiew mirror right here no buttons or anything on it so if you need to control

It it is all through the infotainment we get some buttons up here for the key connect connected services and then we have the slider button for our standard size sunroof with a manual shade you know there’s something refreshing about just having a manual shade I kind like

It up here with me I’ve got plenty of Headroom I’m plenty comfortable at 510 in this vehicle uh very nice very comfortable again we have those uh two position memory on the seats and a manual tilt and Telescope steering wheel in this one I’m going to go ahead turn

The vehicle off since the engine decided to turn on and it is not turning off we’re going to hop in the back seat and see what it’s like sitting behind myself at 510 so as I showed you earlier the back doors do not have the passive entry

On them but as it is currently set up you unlock the front door and you get all doors unlocked the doors open up nice and wide which is a nice touch not a lot of amenities on the door itself there are no sun shades back here but we

Do have two stage heated outboard seats which is a nice touch and your power window control right there so that’s nice that’s uh definitely unexpected in this vehicle class you can see we do have three across seating back here going to go ahead and pop in close the

Door and show you uh very much like the Kia ev6 uh or the new Sportage we get these I kind of modern looking seats with hard plastic backs I guess you can hang like a purse or backpack up here if you had to it’s also a nice grab handle if the

Driver’s acting kind of crazy uh we do get M Pockets they’re hard map pockets on both the backs of both front seats and we also get USBC power on the backs of both of the front seats so that’s a nice touch just additional power back

Here and it is the modern USBC plug we also get air vents but no real controls back here there’s not trizone or anything uh but it is nice to get air vents especially in this size and price class again not a lot of luxuries back

Here to speak of and I already told you these rear seats do not recline because of the battery but I am fairly comfortable there’s a nice cutout uh in the ceiling here uh the sunroof goes up here in front of me see if I could get a

Nice enough view of just the change in elevation of uh the ceiling above up above me we also get a fold down Center armrest with a couple cup holders side by side uh you can get a third person in here though I don’t know that I would

Want to ride three adults back here because we also have a fairly large Center tunnel in this one which is interesting to me and what is a front-wheel drive only platform go ahead and move over and see hug up on Tucker’s child safety seat I am sitting up a

Little higher here in the center but that’s typical of Center seats that’s enough of a tour of this one let’s hop back behind the wheel and see how this thing drives and performs out on the road getting in and driving this $41,000 loaded konero plug-in hybrid

Round you do pay a little bit of a premium for essentially two powertrains in this because as mentioned you can drive it around you can do a full commute for most Americans on nothing but electrons which is a very nice touch uh here in this plug-in hybrid and then

You can take the same vehicle out on a long road trip again the EPA estimates 510 mil of total range on $35 53 cents of gas and electricity just impressive and because we have a uh j1772 plug not a CCS plug charging on road trip is going to be a little bit of

A tricky subject we did road trip a plug-in hybrid uh Chrysler Pacifica and it’s a little more difficult than I thought to find uh destination Chargers with a j1772 plug versus a CCS DC fast charging plug outside conjecture uh it is also harder to find a place to plug in your

110 he suppli charger in a close enough parking distance but again I digress otherwise driving this vehicle electric power trins they’re a little sterile uh they’re a little numb but they’re very nice and convenient they’re very easy and linear and I will say they make for a very comfortable experience behind the

Wheel especially when commuting it’s just seamless power it’s effortless power you you don’t have to rev an engine you don’t have to do anything crazy you just drive it and you drive it comfortably it really makes this $41,000 vehicle feel even more luxurious I already mentioned things nice touches

Like the heated ventilated front seats the heated steering wheel all of which work very well and even though these aren’t leather seats they’re the synex synthetic seats they’re nice they’re comfortable uh they’ve made for a very very comfy seat as I’ve driven this around plenty of room back there for

Fulls size adults all the way around it is a very comfortable vehicle and when it comes to seeing out of it pretty easy to see out everywhere as well that Black Blade back there behind me does make for a rather thick uh C pillar back there behind Tucker shelf safety seat over my

Shoulder but otherwise fairly good VIs ibility on this and it does have blind spot monitoring and all that fun stuff though because we don’t have the full digital gauge cluster here and no 360 cameras if I put my blinker on I don’t get a digital representation over what’s

In my blind spot minor inconveniences I’m sure otherwise this tracks straight true it is fairly quiet in here and even on this heavily textured pavement here in East Texas really no rattles to speak of I did notice it’s not doing it now naturally cuz the cameras are on but

Driving Tucker around earlier today there was a little bit of a rattle Creek here in the dash that was slightly annoying to the point I was kind of banging around trying to fix it techer was like what are you doing Daddy I was like trying to hush it up other than

That that one instance and that one uh spot up here it is a very quiet cabin I will say those Continental tires are a little noisier on this textured pavement but this is very heavily textured pav it’s not so loud that you can’t have a conversation in here it it’s it’s a good

Vehicle for what you’re getting in this price and size class it’s not a Mercedes-Benz after all the driving character of it the steering is light but it is not like light you don’t have to drive it with your fingertips uh it it gives you a nice uh feedback for

What’s going on then I did mention the paddles on the back of the steering wheel we are in EV mode right now I can sew down to a full stop using the paddle there’s a cart behind me so I won’t but you get the idea it takes a little bit of time to

Sew down to a f full stop there’s no way to really modulate it it’s either on or off so if you’re commuting with this you’re going to kind of look like you don’t know how to drive if you’re using that as your brake pedal just something

To note like I said I have not found a full one pedal drive mode in this but uh for the most part it’s been very easy to drive around you can see we’ve got 18 M of electric range left but as we are now cruising at 60 M hour uh we’re going to

See what it’s like taking this corner then I’m going to smash the throttle or the accelerator what do you call it the plug-in hybrid and see what uh the acceleration is like if you are trying to pass somebody again we do have a six-speed dual clutch automatic in this

One so again steering rather nice I mean it’s not a sports car it’s not the ev6 GT but it gives you a nice bit of weight to it too so again not feather light or anything of that nature either and uh now this vehicle’s turning in

Front of me so we’re going to see what a pass looks like with this one and what it does for the gas motor so full stab of the throttle let’s go 3 2 1 gas engine turns on you can see the read out here I mean it gets up and it’ll move it

It is comparable to what you’re getting in this compact hatchback class so think Honda Civics uh Toyota Corollas things like that it is not a race car but it’s fair fair amount of acceleration for what this vehicle is uh it will help you get up and going if you need to which I

Guess is a good segue to this drive mode button right here putting it in sport does turn that electric motor on and gives you a little bit more mph you can see we are still drawing power from the battery even here in in uh sport mode with the gas engine going because those

Power numbers I quoted earlier 180 horsepower 195 lb feet of torque that is also using the electric motor I’ll put the numbers on screen of how that splits up between Gas and Electric Power Trains full stop we are in sport mode again six-speed automatic transmission firm on

The brake firm on the gas nothing happens no revving or anything drop the brake and comes on kind of spins those front tires we get going and 60 you can feel that six-speed automatic shifting going through the gears again it is a dual clutch system so uh it’s

Fairly eager to get you moving and they are very smooth shifts again for the most most of the time that we’ve been in this vehicle the gas engine has actually been off uh so I haven’t really experienced the transmission all that much uh it’s just been smooth seamless

Power as we’ve driven this thing around it is a fairly fun confident vehicle that I have no real complaints with its driving characteristics the only real complaints I have are this dumb dual function uh infotainment climate control so if K can fix that this really would be an excellent commuter vehicle and

Well you’ll have to stick around to see what this would be like for it a family vehicle because later this week Holly will be behind the steering wheel here we’ll have Tucker in the back I’ll install his child seat go through all of that and we’ll talk about what this

Vehicle is like for my family of three and we touched on it earlier when I was giving you a tour of the vehicle so this EV button down here switches you from automatic to hybrid uh to Electric so your three electric Drive modes hybrid electric an automatic there is no like

Eave or electricity off gas only uh so this will always operate as some version of a hybrid and you will always be using up some of those electrons no matter how you have this uh EV mode configured uh I would say hybrid is the least electric uh along with perhaps sport mode though

I’m guessing that kind of works like an e supercharger just for a little extra I don’t know if you noticed it earlier from my hair blowing in the wind it is a fairly windy day today and that does translate especially on the road in motion to a little extra wind noise

Especially today in this one but the competition to this are like I said the Honda Civic Toyota Corolla and this is very comparable to those Vehicles again it’s not overly loud in here it’s just what you would expect from this kind of compact head back class that about does

It for my time here in the 2023 KERO plug-in hybrid electric vehicle in the SX touring trim if you want to see more from us you can uh absolutely find us on all social media platforms Facebook Instagram X Tik Tok threads YouTube everything at GT garag talk or you can

Simply go to GT garag talk.com absolutely hit that subscribe button and ring the bell so you don’t miss any of our future vehicle videoos when those come out but ask for me behind the wheel of the keano phb until next time Gearheads bye stop it will do

It in the SX touring trim and is that right stay tuned even in eco mode if you stab the throttle stab the accelerator that gas engine will come on this thing’s never going to leave you strained for power uh but in Eco in EV it is going to use the

Gas motor as little as possible
