Electric Car Youtuber misinformation – BUSTED

I can’t believe he just said he couldn’t charge up overnight because there’s no charges within 8 Miles there’s 16 charges right behind him the other side of that fence hi everybody Rich again here from Electric classic cars and today’s episode’s going to be a little bit different than most because Tim sent me

A link last night to another YouTuber’s video uh which was about a electric car trip that he’s done from our neck of the woods up to his place Leeds I think it was and I thought you know I’ll watch it see how we got on because you know it’s

In our neck of the woods uh I know whales quite well but um there was let’s say a couple of perceived negativities that he covered in that video which I kind of want to correct him on a little bit in today’s episode so let’s get into

That so this is a YouTuber called MCM and we’ll put a link to the video that we’re talking about in the description of ours here now and looking at his previous videos he’s either seemingly reviewing fish and chips in ten Reef or driving his Porsche tyan around and the

Journey he’s doing in this episode is from St David’s in Southwest Wales right the way up to lead which is in the north of England journey of around about 280 mil and you has to go via Mansfield I think as well so that’s set the scene let’s have a look at the

Video now the first scene if you like is set up with him and a mate by looks of it sitting in the Grove Hotel car park in St David now me and Tim know St David really really well and I recognize it pretty much straight away but they drive

Past a sign that says the Grove Hotel kind of give us a game away and the first perceived problem is around about 4 and 1/2 minutes in where he says he couldn’t charge up last night because the nearest charges are 7 or 8 miles away well let’s look at the facts shall

We now I’ve got zap map opened in front of me here now just to explain to people that don’t know zap map is essentially like a satnav for electric car owners it’s available as an app on your phone as well but I’ve got on the screen and

It shows you where all the Chargers are as would the satav in the Porsche tyan would also show you where all the charges are and I’m pretty sure that this guy knows that because later on he refers to using at map and using his satav in his car to show him where the

Charges are so on that note where are the nearest charges to where he’s parked him his Porsche taian well it might surprise you to learn that they’re the other side of the fence in the background there because they are literally across the road there’s 16 charges in the car park from slow to

Fast to Rapid charges I’ve used them before they’re fantastic and and yeah he kind of was a little bit economical with the truth there by omitting that fact so he could have very easily started this journey with a full tank of electrons and it charged up that car while he was

Asleep now if he did charge up to 100% which he should have done that would have given him 225 miles of range to start his journey on and he confirms that later on in the episode when he does actually charge to 100% as well so 225 miles of range

You’ve got 280 mile journey ahead of you you would have needed have stopped somewhere but I’m not being funny 5 and a half 6 hour Journey you’re going to stop for toilet break or something to eat anyway so when you do you charge up how fast does a Porche tyan charge up on

A typical 150 Kow rapid charger Well in 30 minutes you would have got 215 miles of range in that 30 minutes so you really just needed to stop for a very short amount of time I’ve just stopped the video again here now at 10 minutes and 40 seconds

Because he’s just said Wales is a charging desert which it is not I live in Wales I’ve had electric cars for eight years and anybody that looks at zap map will see there are lots of charges didn’t used to be but there are lots of charges out there now even in my

Little village there are four charges and when he set off in St David which is a small village really I mean okay it’s a city but realistically it’s a very small village there were what 16 charges did I say 16 16 charges in one car park

In one car park exactly so a charging desert Welles is not uh but bear in mind Welles is a rural place as well so you know the population is sparse anyway so you’re not going to have charges all over the place but the other thing to bear in mind with

Rural whales is petrol stations aren’t everywhere either I mean he stops in haford West in a minute uh where there are three petrol stations but there are six rapid charges and the other thing with petrol stations in rural Wales is our local petrol station for instance closes at 8:00 at night um electric

Charges at 24/7 and if you you wanted to fill up with fuel after 8:00 at night if you were going south that would be B Wells which is what half an hour away yeah that’s 30 minutes away um sorry 30 miles away if you’re going south if you’re

Going north new town will be which is 14 mil away and if you go into the coast abist with that’s what 35 mil away yeah so rural Wales isn’t great for petrol stations quite frankly but on his journey here bear in mind he’s just set off from St David’s where they’re 16 and

He’s stopping 16 miles later in Harford West at an instol which is the most expensive charge Network out there and there are other charges in Harford West or further on on his journey which he doesn’t have to detour off which are cheaper but no he’s going to stop at an

Instol 85 P per Kil hour most expensive charges out there now I’ve just stopped the video again here now at 21 minutes and 15 because he’s fully charged up at Hamford West McDonald’s on an insta volt and that’s where I have a little bit of an issue because nobody charges to 100% on

A journey on a r rapid charger why because to 80% you charge it really really quickly and that last bit takes ages it’s a little bit like trying to fill a bathtub with a fire hose and you’re not allowed to spill ear over the side to get up to 80% full really really

Quick and then you got to turn the tap down turn the tap down or it’s nearly full turn it down drip drip drip dri D drip drip drip drip and that bit from 80% to 100% takes ages so he would have known this having an electric car for

What two odd years that you normally just charge up in 20 minutes to 100 to 80% and you’re off bear in mind he didn’t come in empty either so he would have just had a short stop here to get up to 80% and on you go but no

He’s made a meal of it and he’s gone 50 minutes to charge up to 100% to make a a scene around how long it took to charge up now it’s worth noting that there’s nothing wrong with charging up to 100% if you have the time like charging up

Overnight which you should have done at the start but charging up to 100% on Journey no so after his stopping McDonald’s uh he’s got a full charge now 225 mil bear in mind he stopped to charge up after just 16 miles and I think he had 68

Miles uh when he started off in his range so why he stopped so early I don’t know but I’m not going to bore you with the rest of the video because it’s just more of the same but what I did notice is on one of the suggested videos next

To it was another trippy did well so I clicked on that so let’s have a look at that one so I think this shows you how much of a sucker I am for any videos on YouTube that have the word whales in because the title of this and it’s

Another video by MTM we’ll put uh a link in the description and it’s called driving my electric car from North to South Wales at 20 mph against a diesel car RV is the future um so it’s from the tip of North Wales prostatin right the

Way down to the tip of South Wales which Barry Island and it’s kind of a race with a mate of his in a diesel car so route wise Tim you know Wales as much as me yeah what’s the typical route you would do from prostatin down to Barry

Island well it’s pretty much a straight line as far as any roads going to be straight in Wales that’s true but you’d do um you’d go uh Chester yeah rexam oswestry Welsh Paul B Wells Mera tville Cardiff Barry Island yeah so the main Trunk Road from North to South Wales

Yeah which is around about 180 odd miles takes you around about 4 hours just over four hours to do y okay do you think that’s the route they took probably not probably not is correct let’s have a look at where in Earth they went now Tim’s absolutely right if this

Was a true race not just a Top Gear pretend scripted type race then you would indeed take the main Trunk Road from North to Southwest Wales but that’s not the route they took or at least this not the route the EV guy in the tyam took so this guy went

Literally around the houses he took a route which I’ve marked in yellow on the map the normal route you’d take us in red and he went through b roads windy B roads through mountains um through to near Coen right the way over to dogi West Wales and then back again now now

The reason why I think he’s done this is to highlight 20 mph zones of which there will be loads there because you traveling through lots of little tiny villages in Wales and the Trunk Road would have hardly any cu it’s your main Trunk Road dual carriageways main roads

Etc so that’s the reason why I think he went that way but as far as time wise is concerned how much longer do you Reon he took to go that route at at least an hour at least an hour hour yes maybe even more so that route there would have

Taken a lot longer than just going the main road route that’s for sure now charging wise so the macm said he started I think with 130 mile range which would have got him around about 3/4 of the way down and looking at the map here I’ve marked all the rapid

Charges along that route there’s quite a few but he went a really odd route and he stopped off at rig which is quite soon and he charged up as usual to 100% or 99% this time which would have taken him ages not only that but again it’s another instal which is the most

Expensive charge Network in the UK but if he went the same route as his mate who stopped off in welshpool which is roughly just under halfway uh he stopped off there for a toilet break and if he joined his mate for that toilet break he would have

Found that there’s nine rapid charges in the car parks around that Tesco not only that but uh Tesco’s charges for instance are a lot cheaper I think they’re 65 P per kilow hour so yeah charging took a huge amount of time longer than it needed to and it was another really

Expensive insta volt charger so you can see what he’s trying to do here so I think it’s pretty clear that winning this race was not high on the priority list for the mcmas CU you know he he charged up for 40 minutes to 100% or 99% when realistically he could have charged

Up in 20 minutes to 80% and still had more than enough range to get down to Barry and then he went off a ridiculous detour into the deepest darkest depth of whales through little B- roads and Villages just to highlight the 20 m n Zone and again that wasted him probably

Another hour so that’s an hour and 20 minutes he’s wasted on just trying to do that and he he arrived in Barry 40 minutes after Jeff so if he took the main Trunk Road down and had a short stop in welshpool like Jeff did and just

Topped up while he had a toilet break he would have probably arrived 40 minutes before Jeff now should be clear here this isn’t designed to be like a direct attack at these type of YouTubers I get it I mean they are being sensationalist with the facts slightly skewing information to be

Able to get views and clicks because that’s what they’re all about they get paid off views and clicks I get it I have no problem with that but what I do have an issue with is people for instance if you are an EV owner and you

Watch these uh type of videos you will know it’s a load of cods wobble cods wobble cods Wallop because you know the truth it’s a little bit like uh watching you know a crazy person in an airport trying to have an argument with a pilot that planes can’t fly well it’s too late

The pilot knows the planes can fly and it’s the same with EV owners and this guy calls them evangelists which you know I don’t get somebody that is just correcting somebody that’s incorrect with facts and is then called an evangelist which is apparently a derogatory term but actually it’s about time there’s a

Question for you below all you EV owners it’s about time we had an an equal and opposite name for ice drivers so comments below what should we call ICE drivers that are vly opposed to EVS for no logical reason whatsoever um I’ll start one off we’ll call how about ice

Ages Tim you got a confused have you got a I got one now now I’ll have a think I have a think right so so comments below what’s the equivalent of an evangelist for an ice owner so yeah I don’t have an issue with these videos I understand why

They’re made it’s just that they are pushing um potentially dangerous misinformation to people who are not EV owners that knows it’s low rubbish but people who are considering buying an EV probably watching these things and believing every word that comes out of their mouth and that’s where I have a

Problem especially when they outwardly lie to make their point with going back to the start of the episode when he’s saying oh the nearest charger is 7 or eight miles away when clearly they’re just the other side of the fence and he could have charged up to 100% overnight

While he was at the hotel so I guess what I’m trying to say here is if you’re going to make any informed decision in life just do your homework don’t take the first you know comment on trip advisor when you go into somewhere reference you look at a number of

Different things and speak to people a number of different people who have real world experience with things so there you go I hope you enjoyed this episode guys and we’ll see you on the next One

This episode is a little different than most because I’ve just watched an Anti-EV Youtubers episode which is full of lies and misinformation. So I couldn’t resist in correcting it, especially as it was filmed in our back yard here in Wales in a Porsche Taycan.

Whether you’re a fan of EVs, hybrids or good old fashioned petrol and diesel cars, having a strong opinion on what you prefer is fine, but lying about something to fit the narrative is too much. In this video we have to take some corrective action and go into full on ‘debunk’ mode. Enjoy…..
