The 2024 Kia Sportage Plug-In Hybrid is a compelling new addition to the Sportage lineup. Offering up to 34 miles of all-electric range and 261 horsepower combined from its turbocharged 1.6-liter engine and electric motor, the PHEV delivers both efficiency and performance.
On the outside, the Sportage PHEV features the same bold styling as the gas-powered Sportage, with aggressive lines and an imposing front end. The interior is modern and tech-heavy, with dual 12.3-inch displays and available features like a head-up display and heated/ventilated front seats. Materials quality is decent for the class without feeling too plasticky or cheap.
Under the hood is where the Sportage really separates itself from the standard gas model. The PHEV pairs a turbo 1.6-liter four-cylinder with a 90 hp electric motor, drawing power from a 13.8 kWh battery pack. Total system output is an impressive 261 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, giving the Sportage PHEV a 0-60 mph time of just 6.9 seconds in our testing. That’s over a second quicker than the gas Sportage.
The Sportage PHEV really shines around town in EV mode. With a full charge, it can travel up to 34 miles on electricity alone, allowing for silent, emissions-free commuting. Power delivery is smooth and instantaneous thanks to the electric motor’s torque. When the battery runs low, the gas engine seamlessly kicks in to keep you moving.
Charging the battery is simple with the included 7.2 kW Level 2 charger, which can fully recharge in under 5 hours. For longer trips, the Sportage acts like a regular hybrid, with the engine and motor working together for solid acceleration and passing power. EPA-rated fuel economy stands at 36 mpg combined, and we saw 31 mpg in real-world driving.
Ride quality balances comfort and composure, soaking up bumps while remaining planted around turns. The Sportage PHEV doesn’t fully hide its weight, exhibiting some body roll when pushed hard. But handling is secure for an SUV of its size. Steering is precise but could use more feedback. The added weight also contributes to the Sportage’s firm brake pedal, taking a strong push to stop smoothly.
Standard driver aids like forward collision warning, lane keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control work well to reduce fatigue on long drives. The Sportage PHEV also earned top safety scores from IIHS and is packed with the latest tech features.
Pricing starts at $40,815 for a well-equipped X-Line model, which seems reasonable considering the added performance and technology. The top X-Line Prestige trim crosses into luxury territory at $45,315, but still represents strong value compared to rivals.
Overall, the new 2024 Kia Sportage Plug-In Hybrid adds efficiency, power, and technology to Kia’s popular compact SUV. Its spacious interior, sharp handling, and generous electric range make it easy to live with and enjoyable to drive. If you’re considering a compact crossover SUV, the Sportage PHEV should be near the top of your list.
