2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450e | PHEVs Over EVs?
What is up internet world and welcome back to accelerate I’m Mike he’s Ian and today we’re bring the Mercedes-Benz GLE [Applause] [Applause] 450e [Applause] so for 20124 the Mercedes GLE has got some significant upgrades starting with the exterior a bit on the interior but the main focus is this guy this is the GLE 450e it is a plug-in hybrid with an actual battery that gets you places not these little mild hybrids that do
Absolutely nothing this thing will get you places and when I mean places I mean 77 km worth of range or 48 miles for the Americans so listen to this this is how the model lineup goes this is the only plug-in hybrid you have the GLE 350 the
GLE 450 the GLE 450e this guy then you have the GLE 5 580 the amgs show up with their 53 and their 63s so that is the lineup of the Mercedes-Benz GLE but our Focus will be on this the plug-in hybrid because we are in the world of electrification and I’m glad
Mercedes-Benz has something that we can actually get proper [Applause] range so check this out this has a 2 L turbocharged motor that is plugin hybrid so that’s the deal this is a plug-in hybrid this is Mercedes-Benz first plug-in hybrid now it’s kind of strange and I’ll tell you why the GLE 350 has a 2 L turbocharged motor the GLE 450
Without the plug-in hybrid has a 3 l so isn’t that kind of strange that the GLE 450e has a 2 L so it’s taking the smaller motor and it’s hybrid it up so there’s my story so how much horsepower does this make this makes 381 horsepower and
479 lb feet of torque so let’s see what this thing does to 60 I put it in sport putot on the brakes putot on the Gasolina and go what do we got what do we got what we got what we got almost almost and Bam 5.4 seconds o that’s pretty
Quick all right all right that puts the GLE 450e slightly slower than a Honda Civic Type R and just quicker than the BMW X1 X Drive 28i this Mercedes is built in Tuscaloosa Alabama and its competitors include the Ford Explorer Hybrid the Jeep Cherokee 4xe but those things don’t really align
In my mind the BMW plug-in hybrid does it gives you a range of 64 km as well as the Range Rover Sport that gives you 77 they’re very close the Range Rover Sport actually blew my mind on how far it could go with being a plug-in hybrid okay so you’re wondering where is

Anyways where am I going with this well when we had the Range Rover Sport hybrid we did an actual range test now we took the Range Rover from our studio all the way to a beach and back now that beach was 38 km away from the studio and then
It’s 38 km to get back so 76 and we were able to do the entire trip on battery only so that was really impressive and 80 km is really all you need for plug-in Hy because if you’re going really far distance then you’re just going to use
Gas but for your day-to-day in the city 80 is really all you need anyways I am bummed that we didn’t get to release that video because there were quite a few funnies in it it’s going to be okay it’s not fair man it’s not fair actually doesn’t smell too bad in here
Feel 10 lbs lighter baby as soon as we pull into as soon as we pull into Port stle the beach they’re going to give me some sun I don’t know a lot of people wearing jackets man don’t worry it’s way warmer further down it’s way warmer just around the
Corner yeah just around the corner now with this GLE 450e I did do a short test just to check if the estimation was right on the vehicle so for this range test I decided to go get coffee I started with 82 km of range Which is higher than the 77 km Mercedes claims
But that 82 dropped to 80 the minute I touched the gas pedal so that was strange anyways let’s assume I started with 80 km by the end of my trip I was at 61 km and I had used some fuel as you can see here I think I accidentally hit
The drive mode button or something so a 15 km trip used 19 km of range and a couple reasons for that would be that there were very few opportunities for regenerative braking as hybrids Excel and stop and go traffic and I was in the Drive-Thru for a fairly long time so I
Wasn’t necessarily getting distance but I was using all the features in the car for at least 30 minutes now there are articles out there where people have been able to achieve above 90 km of range and that’s likely in ideal situations the cold weather in Canada
Can play a major role in reducing range but overall you could easily do your day-to-day errands with this battery alone all right back to M so they’ve added two new colors for 2024 sodalite blue metallic and manufacturer Alpine gray solid this is a green it’s a pretty
Funky green it’s close to Black now they have changed up the front they’ve really simplify these headlights they have two lower LEDs and three upper ones kind of changed it up and I do appreciate what they’ve done now the grill is nice and aggressive I like all these little stars
Here they have this propeller design but the big change here is this lower bumper a lot more aggressive and you have this massive lip on the bottom it just flares out the front of this truck making it look 2024 19s are standard 20 and 21s are an
Option on your GLE it comes with a new pre-collision warning system that detects pedestrians and cyclists you also have this new package called the off-road package it increases ground clearance gives you some underbody clading and of course an off-road mode on your screen but visually speaking it
Looks kind of the same as the last generation it’s got these rounded body sides it’s got this guy over here pretty typical when you see a Mercedes-Benz GLE I do like this though it’s fairly wide on the back this is fancy I’ve never actually looked at a GLE so close so I
Couldn’t tell you if the last one had it or not but I do appreciate this little booty bump so on the back you have a third brake light a tinted rear window that’s fairly horizontal which means you’ll have pretty good visibility from the driver’s perspective you have a rear
Wiper the Mercedes-Benz Badge Of course GLE 450e I wonder as time goes on and models get longer and longer will it actually reach the sign or the logo right here look how long this is GLE 450e that’s a lot of letters and numbers on this side you have formatic of course
Because it is four-wheel drive you do have a rear camera hiding underneath there that pops down when you put in Reverse if you’re curious to know what this toes it toes 7700 lb which is a lot of weight pretty much most smaller to Mid size boats then you have these
Exhausts on this side and that side except they’re not real they’re completely plastic because we are in 2024 woohoo front seat of the GLE looks very similar to the GLS dual 12.3 in screens behind this glass panel okay don’t jump let’s start the door panel you have your typical Mercedes-Benz you
Can adjust all your seat configurations on this door panel including three increments of memory seat you have heated and cooled three increments each each and you have a button that’s for the passenger so you can set their heated seats on as well so you don’t have to reach all the way over when
You’re driving now you have a burme sun system that is phenomenal burmister I love Mercedes-Benz sound systems they have one of the best audio that you get standard from Factory you do the same sort of Dash exactly the same as GLS this is the same Vibe a fake vent over
Here and a real vent on the left hand side it does have heads up display the steering wheel is a little bit different it’s from an older generation this doesn’t look like the new generation to me but it is what it is same sort of vibe though same haptic buttons on the left
Hand side you have all your cruise control stuff on the right hand side you have all your audio and voice commands it is heated the heated button is right where the Tilt and telescopic that is fully powered is you do have plus and minus for your shifters that is for your
Regen stuff of course on the left hand side you have all your wipers display and on the right hand side you have your Park reverse neutral and drive because this is a plug-in hybrid you have a little bit different display from the driver perspective the gauges are slightly different you have 64 different
Ambient colors that’s pretty typical and then on the bottom here take a look at the stitching they’ve done on the dash around the HVAC controls really really nice touch and I like how they have still clicky buttons love that to the left of that you have your start and stop button and
Then the nice big wood panel on the center console this is really really good very similar to the GLS here again when you move this panel back you have your wireless charger two USB C’s and then you have two cup holders that have heated and cooled I used to think it was
Just on the driver side but actually the passenger side also cools off cuz you can see this little or this sort of aluminum behind it or whatever metal that is on all the way around kind of wraps itself all the way around take a look and then a trackpad or touch pad
That you can slide your fingers up and down and it changes things on the screen and to the left of that you have your different driving modes you have individual sport hybrid electric and Battery hle then you have of course your 360 cameras your car settings when you hit it you
Have your quick settings like heads up display whether you want it on or off then you have your dual opening Center armrest that does have a heated arm in it so when you have your heated seats on this is also heated when you open it up
By pushing this button you have a USBC right there and a decent amount of space to put two drinks let me show you how these seats fold down on the Mercedes-Benz GLE simply just a handle here it folds I wouldn’t say flat but it Folds down
Enough that you can put stuff in it fairly decent how much weight is there well it’s fairly Hefty not crazy uh the only thing though is that these seats don’t recline there’s no button to recline them this is they’re fixed they don’t go anywhere now a Q5 does recline
This is a GLE this should reply in my opinion however you do get a lot of room here check this out look how much room I have a ton of leg room and that’s exactly how I sit in the front seat so that’s good to know how about space and
Cup holders well I have two cup holders right here and in the door I do have enough to fit a bottle other storage well it’s non-existent there’s a little bit of piece over here and behind the door panel other than that I wouldn’t say there’s a ton of storage in here
It’s just really more designed for fit and finish quality especially a few things one is look at these seats they flare out really well to give me some really good leg support they even have the cutout in the seat in case my legs are that long I do have this panoramic
Sunroof that comes all the way back that gives me great visibility above me to my left including this window right here so a lot of thumbs up I do have three increments of heated seats for me and three increments of heated seats for the passenger I do have two USB C’s
Including vents I have two vents right here there’s no other vents on the ceiling or on the side pillar it’s all just here not bad not bad now on the trunk you have 43 in worth of depth 46 in worth of width and you get three
Things on the back standard you get this this is a tire kit you get this which is a first aid kit in case you hurt yourself and you have a boo boo and this is is the charging cable that comes with it so this is what it looks like pretty straightforward pretty
Typical pluggy [Applause] pluggy so how about the drive just like the GLS it’s very smooth it’s a little bit of a smaller chassis it’s not going to be as smooth as a GLS but it’s still smooth nonetheless also it’s very well insulated from engine noise it’s fairly
Quiet you don’t hear any whine when you’re on throttle you hear the engine but it’s not a whiny for bangle whatsoever it’s smooth it’s quiet you can have a proper conversation in here without yelling and that’s what you kind of expect out of a Mercedes-Benz the steering is soft the seats are excellent
Visibility is great there’s actually a pretty big blind spot actually but the mirror wait a second let me double check what I just said that blind spot looks pretty big and these mirrors look pretty small so I totally get why they’re using a four banger it totally makes sense
Obviously smaller engine still makes really good horsepower with the hybrid portion of it and the interesting part though here is just the naming of it that’s what I find I find that interesting if you know why they have done this let me know in the comments
Below now there’s a $650 option to get the super fast charging this one has the medium charging not Ultra fast but to be honest I think when you go home you plug it in for 7 hours and when you get back into it you have all the juice you
Need this is one thing that’s amazing on this thing the Turning ratio is excellent just really good turning ratio I was not always a huge Mercedes-Benz fan but now as I just keep driving them I’m kind of used to them to be honest it’s just I don’t know
Something that’s something I really like about them for sure they have the best audio I mean if I’m comparing this BMW and Audi for like out of the box Benz just always has the best audio the sound system is always the best just something they do is the best I don’t
Know that’s like the truth so let’s say you’re in the market and you’re right down to the Mercedes and the BMW the BMW definitely feels and drives sportier it’s a little bit more bumpy a little bit more road noise it definitely feels more aggressive like onramps off-ramps it’s definitely more
Engaging than this hands down even like neck and neck trim for trim it’s the the BMW just handles better feels more engaging to drive this is definitely more luxurious this is calmer this is better for long trips I’m definitely driving this if I’m driving over 3 hours per day but I’m probably
Going to buy the BMW if I’m driving it for 1 hour or less per day and I’m a spirited driver for those that don’t don’t care about like the engagement of driving this is more than what what anybody would need it’s just very good in all aspects of it they’ve done a
Really good job with this Mertes Benz so we’ve had this GLE for about a week now and if I had to complain about one thing it is the wireless charger it is very slow and it heats up your phone like way too hot that’s my only complaint other than that everything’s
Good I like the heated seats when you put your heated seats on the heated armrest also activates so your elbows get nice and toasty I like that I like the steering wheel it’s nice and soft it’s really good it has the exact same Dash as a GLS pretty much the same thing
Just a little bit smaller obviously cuz it’s not as big everything’s just very familiar because I had the GLS last week and now we have the GLE this week so yeah thumbs up I like that so that’s it on our review for the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GL plug-in hybrid if
