Edmunds Top Rated 2024 | The Best Cars, Trucks and SUVs for 2024

ALISTAIR WEAVER: Hi. I’m Alistair Weaver. And welcome to Edmunds Top Rated 2024, the benchmark for excellence in the automotive world. Across six awards, we’ll recognize the best cars, trucks, and SUVs on sale today, whether they’re powered by gas or electricity. And then we’ll name Edmunds Top Rated Best

Of the Best, the standout vehicle of 2024. As always, our awards are based on our industry-leading testing process. Every year, over 300 vehicles pass through the Edmunds office. And we drive hundreds of thousands of miles in the real world and at our private test track to deliver the fabled Edmunds rating.

And if it’s powered by electricity, every vehicle is subject to the world famous Edmunds EV range, efficiency, and charging tests. If you want a deep dive on all our winners, head to edmunds.com/toprated. And while you’re there, check out all the great advice, shopping tools, and deals Edmunds has to offer.

We’ll even make you a cash offer for your existing vehicle. Right. Plug over. Our objective today is to give you a shortcut to the very best vehicles on sale irrespective of when they were launched. That’s why we can and do have repeat winners. Let’s get on with it.

The finalist for Edmunds Top Rated Car 2024 are the Honda Civic Type R, the Chevrolet Corvette Z06, and the Toyota Prius. The Type R and Z06 are both enthralling performance machines that prove that automakers haven’t given up on gas-powered entertainment. But when the car that kicked off the hybrid movement

Gets a glow up for the ages, we have to take notice. BRIAN WONG: Toyota added some-70 horsepower to the Prius but didn’t subtract any fuel economy. That is witchcraft. It makes the Prius much better to drive, especially now that you can get on the highway without worrying about it.

Inside, the big screen is a great addition. But what has me excited are the new driver aids. Toyota has added safety features that make the Prius easier to live with in day-to-day situations. And that makes owning the car a better experience overall. JODI TOURKOW It’s got great tech.

I mean, it has more USB plugs than seats. The trunk space is a bit smaller than the old Prius, but we still managed to fit a couple of big suitcases in there. Not a problem. But the Prius’s real calling card is still efficiency. It is the most efficient hybrid on sale right now.

And it’s reasonably priced. ALISTAIR WEAVER: The Prius was always a standout for practicality and efficiency. Now, with its improved technology and performance, the reinvented Toyota Prius is the Edmunds Top Rated Car for 2024. Our Edmunds Top Rated Electric car finalists prove that sedans still have an exciting future.

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 is a marvel of efficiency and tops our Edmunds EV charging test leaderboard as the fastest charging electric vehicle. And the BMW i7 is a stunning luxury flagship that majors on rear seat comfort. But it’s another BMW, the midsize BMW i5, that caught our attention.

JONATHAN ELFALAN: BMW was smart about electrifying the 5 Series. It has all the strengths of the original car and all the strengths of an EV. So you don’t give up anything that makes it a great sedan. And the i5, it’s so quiet. It feels more luxurious than the gas-powered 5 Series.

We’ve been let down by some luxury electric cars in the past. But BMW nailed it. JODI TOURKOW The BMW is giving us a masterclass in how to do electrified luxury. A sense of quality, the materials, it just feels so solid. Then the comfort and the details are more like one

Of BMW’s larger, more expensive luxury cars, yet somehow the i5 still costs less than its competitors. ALISTAIR WEAVER: The i5 raises the bar for both mid-size luxury sedans and luxury EVs. It embraces electrification without giving up anything that makes a traditional 5 Series so appealing.

That’s why the Edmunds Top Rated Electric Car for 2024 is the BMW i5. SUVs became America’s most popular vehicles by blending family friendly practicality with style and comfort. This year, the updated Kia Telluride, a former Edmunds Top Rated winner, returns as a finalist alongside the revised Mercedes-Benz GLS, a new luxury benchmark.

But neither could unseat last year’s champion, the Kia Sportage hybrid. CLINT SIMONE: For small SUVs, space and good MPG are obviously really important. And both the trunk and the back seat in the Sportage are some of the best for any vehicle this size. And when we tested it, the Sportage hybrid

Was really efficient. It had better MPG than all of its competitors. EMME HALL: So small SUVs can sometimes kind of feel like an appliance. But the Sportage just has something extra. It’s got looks, the comfort, all of the screens. I mean, it just manages to feel special.

And then the fact that it does all of the other practical SUV stuff really well, it just makes it a clear winner. ALISTAIR WEAVER: Our winner takes the class by mixing space, style, and comfort with an unexpected combination of power and efficiency. Edmunds Top Rated SUV for 2024 is the Kia Sportage Hybrid.

Every year, there are more electric SUVs to choose from. Our finalists span every segment, starting with the small and affordable Kia Niro EV and moving up to last year’s Edmunds Top Rated winner, the Hyundai Ioniq 5. But there is a clear winner. The Kia EV9 is the most family friendly electric vehicle

On sale today. BRIAN WONG: Kia already makes our favorite three-row SUV the Telluride. And now with the EV9, it makes our favorite electrified SUV as well. It’s even roomier inside too. So you can fit adult passengers easily in all three rows. And speaking of that interior, it’s

So nice it wouldn’t feel out of place in the lineup of a luxury brand. CLINT SIMONE: I have to talk about performance. I mean, the all-wheel drive version of the EV9 is actually surprisingly quick. Of course, most people care more about range and charging. And there’s really good news there too.

The EV9 beat its EPA rating. We did 306 miles in our Edmunds EV range test. When it comes to fast charging, it put in an extremely strong performance there too. ALISTAIR WEAVER: It’s performance, charging, and range make it an impressive EV, while its exceptional interior makes it a class-leading three-row SUV.

Edmunds Top Rated Electric SUV for 2024 is the Kia EV9. Our Top Rated Truck finalist demonstrate the stride smaller trucks have taken. This year’s finalists include the redesigned and much improved Toyota Tacoma alongside a familiar Edmunds favorite, the Honda Ridgeline. But it was the redesigned Chevy Colorado

That put everything we love about full-size trucks into a smaller package. JONATHAN ELFALAN: Chevy reinvented this truck. It used to be kind of nondescript. Now it has this eye-catching design inside and out. But more importantly, it has substance to back up those looks. For example, it can tow up to 7,700 pounds.

And that’s more than what some full-size trucks are equipped to handle. EMME HALL: So what really excites me about the Colorado is the optional off-road suspension that you can get on the ZR2. But listen, if you’re not an off road nerd like me, there are still plenty of really cool features.

So Chevy’s brought in all of the Google technology. That’s pretty awesome. You can get a lot of driver’s aids. There’s towing technology. Just a lot of features that we haven’t really seen before in a mid-size truck. ALISTAIR WEAVER: This mid-size offers top of its class capability and the kind

Of upscale touches you’d expect in the best full-size trucks. For proving the full potential of the mid-size segment, Edmunds Top Rated Truck for 2024 is the Chevrolet Colorado. Our Top Rated Electric Truck finalists for 2024 include the GMC Hummer EV, a modern interpretation of the cult classic, and the Rivian R1T,

Now available in a more affordable dual motor trim. But it’s impossible to ignore our 2023 champion. The Ford F-150 Lightning didn’t just win the segment last year. It won our Best of the Best award for electrifying America’s most popular truck. EMME HALL: So it’s an F-150. So it’s already a really good truck.

But the Lightning, it just takes it up to 11. I mean, there’s so much torque. There is so much power. But that doesn’t just make this truck quick. If you’re towing locally, it’s really going to feel effortless. BRIAN WONG: Right now, no other electric truck

Can compete with the Lightning on the pickup fundamentals. With its full-size bed, towing capability, and ability to function as a battery for everything from a work site to a tailgate, the Lightning is built for actual work. And as a bonus, you can option it up like a luxury car.

ALISTAIR WEAVER: Fusing incredible power and useful technology with standard setting space and utility makes for a clear winner. Our Edmunds Top Rated Electric Truck for 2024 is the Ford F-150 Lightning. Each of these winners represents the finest of their genre, the ideal choice for American car shoppers in 2024.

But our rewards wouldn’t be complete without recognizing the best of the best. Based on the most rigorous independent testing in the automotive world, this award is for the car, truck, or SUV that not just tops its class, but goes above and beyond with its innovation and impact.

Last year, the award went to the Ford F-150 Lightning for electrifying the full-size pickup truck. This year, the trophy goes to another electric vehicle that brings in-demand utility to a wide audience. JONATHAN ELFALAN: So we’ve only seen a handful of three-row EVs before this. And they’ve either been really expensive or too

Cramped to be of any real use. This is a mainstream EV that has all the strengths of the best gas-powered three-row SUVs. So the EV9 is really moving the needle in terms of what an electric vehicle can be. CLINT SIMONE: Kia already makes some of our favorite electric vehicles on sale.

But the EV9 just raises the bar that much higher. It has new technology with really user friendly controls. And it’s honestly just a fantastic template for their future electric cars. ALISTAIR WEAVER: Kia has become a regular winner of our Edmunds Top Rated Awards. But the EV9 is their greatest achievement to date.

It sets a new standard for electric SUVs, making it a worthy winner of the Edmunds Top Rated Best of the Best award for 2024. That’s it for Edmunds Top Rated 2024. For more details on all the awards and to read our in-depth reviews of every winner, head to edmunds.com/toprated. That’s it for now.
