Car Check | Mercedes-AMG GT 63 4MATIC+

Hey guys, welcome to the latest episode of Car Check. We are back in Immendingen with the all-new Mercedes-AMG GT 63 4MATIC+. The GT predecessor has been my all-time favourite AMG. So, I am really looking forward to taking this brand-new Mercedes-AMG GT 63 for my first laps around Immendingen today.

We have Matthias here, our product manager, who will answer all our questions. Hi, Maro! What is your overall highlight for this car? What I especially like about this one is the combination of performance and everyday usability, so the comfort of the car. Talking about everyday comfort, we asked you, the Private Lounge community,

To send in your questions and comments. The first question: Can we fit a set of golf clubs in the trunk? I have a set with me, so we can try that when it stops raining. But Matthias? Actually, yes, two golf sets fit into the trunk in the base model.

But you can also take the 2+2 seats option and fold down the rear seats. With this option, you have up to 675 litres of trunk space and you can even fit a bicycle in the car if you take off the front wheel.

Awesome! I like to golf and cycle, so that definitely ticks two boxes for me. Yes, it is a cool function, especially the rear seats. With the rear seats, you can put people up to 1.5 metres into the car. So, it is not only for your kids, but also for small people.

Perfect for fathers like me: I know my daughter enjoys fast AMG cars. This is definitely a nice one, yes. My first impression is, it feels like I am sitting higher. You are sitting higher and also a bit more to the front compared to the former GT.

Yes, the car feels more nimble, smaller in front of me, I have more overview. The front is a little bit shorter than the old one with this car’s new proportions. So, you can see much better out of the car. It has a better all-round view and helps more with daily usability.

Yes, I definitely see more and feel like I can see more of the limits of the car. Right, yes. Let us test the driving experience. Yeah, pedal to the metal! Great sound, great power, that is to be expected. See the brakes: Yes, okay, good deceleration here in the wet.

Turning is really good! Very direct and very little body roll. The body is almost not moving. Exactly, yes, that is due to our new AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL system, which uses the kinetic energy of the car to stabilize it in curves so that you do not have so much roll.

We do not have any mechanical anti-roll stabilisation anymore. The dampers take over this function. You can feel, here, like a long tight corner and I tighten the steering a little bit. Obviously, traction is great with the four-wheel drive, but you can really feel the front reacting and no movement in the body roll.

That is really nice and extremely precise. Yes, the movement also depends on your current driving programme. We are now in RACE mode; this is the least roll that you can have in the car. So, it is really very stable. The traction is amazing. Braking.

I notice the rear spoiler is constantly adjusting, going up and down. Exactly, that is the active rear spoiler. Depending on the driving programme and the speed, it comes out at different speeds. It helps to improve performance, but also makes for very low drag, so it reduces the fuel consumption as well.

And how does that impact performance? We asked our customers who drove the former AMG GT and they asked for 2+2 seating so that they can put their kids in the car, as well as for the larger trunk space. Regarding the performance: that does not affect the performance at all.

It even helps make a more stable ride, especially on straights and at higher speeds because we have a longer wheelbase. Makes total sense, absolutely. In fast corners and at high speeds, a longer wheelbase helps with stability. Coming to our next question: While I understand the platform is shared with the recent SL,

Why did you go away from rear-wheel drive and transaxle transmission, which were both delivering true driving experience in the previous generation GT? First of all, because we moved the transmission to the front, we get a lot more space in the luggage compartment.

At the same time, our 4MATIC+ is a fully variable all-wheel drive system. So, it usually runs 100% on the rear axle and can distribute up to 50% of the torque to the front wheels. When it loses traction on the rear. Especially when it loses traction, exactly. But also, depending on the driving situation

And depending on the driving mode, as well. So, this not only gives more performance. For instance, from 0 to 100 km/h, we are faster than the previous GT. We need 3.2 seconds to reach 100 km/h from a standstill. So, it not only increases performance, it also gives you more driving stability

And safety, so more everyday usability in the end. That explains why the traction was so good. On a day like today, wet and slippery, the traction was incredible out of the corners. For the people who still want to have the feeling of the old AMG GT,

We have one function in this car, the Drift mode. This disengages the front axle, so the car runs 100% on the rear axle. That is the mode that puts a smile on your face! Exactly, you are not faster, but you have much more fun. All right, let us try the Drift mode.

Going to RACE mode, Manual, ESP off, pull both paddles and confirm with the right-hand paddle, and you will find yourself in Drift mode. Let us shift down to second gear here and give it a try. There we go! All right, nice! That is a lot of fun!

A lot of power and very direct on the rear. Yeah, big smile! Coming back to our first question, let us grab a golf bag and find out if we can put it in the trunk. Let us try it out.

You have no free hand now, this is why we have the HANDSFREE ACCESS function. Let us see and find out. It fits. Coming to our final question, addressed to me: How does this GT compare to its predecessor and how has it been improved? I was very impressed with the cornering ability,

As we talked about very little roll, body movement, very direct steering. I would say it has at least as good cornering ability as its predecessor. Plus, the added space, in the trunk and with the two seats, which for me as a father is definitely a benefit.

What probably impressed me most is the traction out of the corners. Even on a wet and rainy day with slippery conditions, the traction was incredible. The tires really dig into the tarmac and we did not lose any traction out of the corner. That was definitely an improvement and impressive.

Maybe a little bit unexpected, I also really like the sound. In my opinion, the sound is another step up. It is definitely AMG, better than its predecessor. That is for everyone to decide themselves, but I was very impressed. Matthias, we had a rainy but fun day. Thanks so much for all your insights.
