My name is bisa Butler I’m an artist who creates quilted portraits and I want to make an honest representation of what it is to be human what it is to be African-American and do both of those things using fabric alone and my portraits are quilted because fabric is the medium that speaks

To me I choose a lot of African fabric because my roots are in Ghana so I use a lot of cloth that comes from the continent and I love using African cloth because the women there they name fabric according to wives tales and folk tales and these Fabrics a lot of them were

Printed in the early 1900s and they’re so popular that they keep being printed today so people recognize them if you don’t know your story then you’re disconnected from who you really are so so it became my own personal mission to create portraits that tell trueu stories and I think it’s so

Important for any culture to be able to tell its own story because no one else can walk in your shoes and tell you what it felt like to be you

Bisa Butler partnered with BMW for Black History Month to take a closer look at how heritage can influence innovation.
