BMW USA | Bisa Butler #blackhistorymonth

Hi my name is bisa Butler I partnered with BMW this year during Black History Month I’m an artist who creates quilted portraits I have been creating portraits out of fabric for the past about 23 years I select African fabric because my roots are in Africa I’m also speaking to

The people in the diaspora the Africans who see that fabric they know what I’m saying so I’m telling a story with that fabric it means everything to me to be able to tell black stories and amplify them BMW is also an entity that cares very deeply about craftsmanship I think it’s so important

For any culture to be able to tell its own story because no one else can walk in your shoes and tell you what it felt like to be you when I grew up I was very close to my grandmother it was my grandmother’s photographs that inspired the question

Who are these people here are the stories of African-American people who made a difference there were people African-American people who died before their names could be recorded but those people helped push us forward to allow us to live our lives now

Bisa Butler partnered with BMW for Black History Month to take a closer look at how heritage can influence innovation.
