RUNAWAY JAGUAR I-PACE – ARE ELECTRIC CARS DANGEROUS?
We need to talk about this runaway Jaguar Eyepiece if you don’t know what I’m talking about yesterday afternoon the Northwest Motorway police uh Facebook and Twitter accounts published a a post saying that uh police had had to stop a car on the motorway that uh had suffered some kind of break failure and one was
Unable to stop and they published a photo of the car with a police car obviously right in front of it where they saw teack this car to get it to stop that car is very clearly a Jaguar eye Pace uh and I mean straight from the
Off uh the post was worded talking about how an electric car had suffered an electrical failure and was unable to stop and straight away I think that raises alarm Bells as to what the intention of these posts might be uh and it seems odd to me straight away coming
From an official police account uh that that they would frame it in that way but what has actually happened here so I see since then this story has been picked up by various media outlets and the Daily Mail even have an interview with the driver who was in shock and awe that his
90,000 Jaguar ey Pace wouldn’t stop apparently it’s not the first time it’s ever happened it’s happened to him before Jaguar checked the car over they said it was fine Etc and I I’m not doubting that it happened it clearly something went wrong with this car the
Guy was unable to stop it and he then seek police assistance uh to bring him to a stop safely uh it’s awesome news that that was able to be done in a manner that meant that he’s fine uh it looks to me like the car is relatively undamaged as well which given the
Account that was given to the Daily Mail of him having to basically drive into the back of a police car at 90 M hour uh you would think there’d be a bit more damage to both vehicles if that was the case case however obviously the police they’re experts they know exactly what
They’re doing uh and and they’ve probably done this kind of thing before with with someone not wanting to stop not because the car is broken but because they don’t want to stop and therefore you know controlled stops something the police have very experienced that uh and you know great
Job awesome what I do have a problem with though is the way this is now being talked about and I think almost immediately when this Facebook post started being noticed the comments were fairly predictable oh oh ho those dangerous electric cars they’ll never have an electric car they’re so
Dangerous I’ve been telling everybody they shouldn’t have an electric car and it’s like I I really struggle to see the relevance of the powert Trin of the car to this event that has happened yes it’s an electric car it’s a Jaguar ipas but does the fact it’s electric mean that
This event was more likely or less likely to happen no absolutely not uh yes it has basically the equivalent of an automatic transmission so you can’t uh force it into neutral cuz you don’t have sort of full control over that in a manual car when you select neutral you’re you’re physically selecting the
Neutral position on the gearbox and taking it out of gear and an EV you’re not doing that you’re relying on the electronics doing their thing when you shift to the neutral position that it actually puts the drivetrain in neutral and and stops the power being applied to
The wheels that’s also the case for the vast majority of modern automatic transmission vehicles with petrol or diesel engines uh the the gear selector isn’t physically connected to the transmission it’s electronic and it will send a signal saying that you selected neutral and it will do its thing so
Exactly the same failure mode where you’re unable to select neutral to stop the car from accelerating would happen with any automatic transmission vehicle not just an electric vehicle furthermore uh in the Daily Mail article it says I tried to press the brake and the car
Sped up to over 100 m hour and I I struggle to see how that is even possible the brakes in any car sold in the UK and Europe has a physical connection to the braking system for the brake pedal there’s no brake by wire uh you will have Servo assistance which in
An EV is a an electronic unit that builds a vacuum that aids the brakes uh you also find similar brake booster systems in diesels which don’t have the same pressure to to to take that off the vacuum system of the engine like a petrol engine has therefore this isn’t a
New Concept and it’s not something that is EV specific But ultimately that brake pedal is directly connected to the Hydraulics for the braking system therefore if you stamp on the pedal hard enough you will generate some kind of braking effect whether that’s enough to overcome an engine or a motor that is
The decided it’s going full Pelt for whatever reason is you know another thing entirely how good are the brakes I’m not sure I wouldn’t have thought an ipce would have weedy little brakes given we’re talking about a relatively powerful car uh but I find it really hard to believe that there was no
Braking effort whatsoever a complete failure of a braking system is pretty rare and obviously you’ve had split circuit braking systems for an awful long time though and the one in the Jaguar ey Pace will be no different so was the chances of a brake failure heightened because it was an electric
Car no not any more so than it is in a diesel where it has a very similar vacuum pump system so I I’m failing to see the the connection there between this failure mode and the fuel type and then the car kept accelerating and was doing over 100 Mil hour
Well unintended acceleration incidents have happened in the past Toyota obviously had a massive issue with that a number of years ago uh they had a number of reports of this unintended acceleration and it turned out that the primary contributor to those incidents was the design of the floor mats for
Their vehicles uh and they were therefore more likely for the floor mat to get wedged in the accelerator and wedge it on so it wasn’t actually really a failure of the vehicle or the vehicles Control Systems it was the mat was getting stuck and was pressing the accelerator down and therefore
Unattended acceleration incidents that are actually caused by mechanical failure or electrical failure are very rare and I find it hard to believe that that is heightened because it’s an EV it has the same Safety Systems as any other car it should have the same override so
So I know in a lot of cars that have an electronic parking brake which because you might say well if it had a manual parking brake I’m in my Cami and it does it has a manual parking brake which you can just pull on on you’d at least be a
To have some kind of effort to slow it down if all the other systems are failed if you have an electronic parking brake which the uh Jag your ipce will have then that is more difficult to to engage whilst you’re moving however the majority of electronic parking brake
Systems if you hold the button if you’re driving you pull the button up uh and hold it it will perform some kind of emergency stop type maneuver because at the end of the day they don’t call it the E bra in America for nothing right we call it the parking brake but they
Call it the E bra because it’s meant to be able to give you some kind of emergency breaking and even when it is an electronic parking brake it does do that are electric cars inherently dangerous and are they more dangerous and and is this indicate of anything no
Do Jag Land Rover potentially have a big quality problem and is that something they should be looking at yes absolutely I I I mean I do hope that they’re going to fully investigate this and they’re going to tell us what went wrong and why I think I’m most concerned by the
Suggestion that this has happened before to the same car and the same driver and therefore if there is an inherent design flaw with the ipace uh and the potentially one that could affect other Jaga Land Rover vehicles cuz let’s be honest part sharing and stuff is very
Common then I do hope they’ll do everything they can to discover what the problem actually is and do something to solve it uh that would appear to be the least they could do to put people’s minds at rest I mean if I had an eyp I
Would find this worrying but if I had any other Jaguar Land Rover product I would also find this very worrying because the ipace doesn’t have anything about it that inherently means it’s more likely to suffer from this kind of event and that was really the purpose of this
Video was a little bit of a rant to let me know what you think in the comments do you think that an electric vehicle is inherently more likely to suffer from one of these types of incidents than a petrol or diesel car I mean I think I’ve
Made it very clear where I on this issue uh and I think it it’s just typical um of of any slightly negative story that involves an electric vehicle just gets spun out of control and everybody starts talking about how it it must be because it’s an EV and I don’t believe that at
All but I would love to hear your thoughts so do let me know what you think in the comments but that is all for this video thank you very much for watching I’ll see you next time
