Travel Smart with Your Ebike: Protection Tips, Must-Have Travel Items, AND Our Top Ebike Rack Pick!

So you’re looking to travel with your electri bikes well this video should help more security it’s also really long you have two all the way up to 8 mm for Allen’s or the hex Keys now you might be wondering why would you need these so maybe triple purpose or I guess

Quadruple purpose I’m going to talk about some accessories that you might want to consider purchasing but this video will also serve as a checklist to make sure you don’t forget anything on your travels that would be a big bummer later in the video I’ll actually load up

Our vehicle and I have some tips and tricks along the way that should help you out as well by the way I’m Ryan from ebike Escape and if you’ve found this video helpful I’d really appreciate it if you subscribe to the channel we are hoping to hit 50,000 subscribers by the end of

2024 with that let’s get started let’s first start with this basket now it serves two purposes one because I can pack in it and two it’s easily removable which is important as you’ll see later in the video when I show you what electric bike we’ll be bringing on our

Two-month trip yes two months might have gone a little Overkill with some of these things you can always tailor some of my suggestions down to fit your needs and by the way all of these products will be linked in the description in case you want to pick some out yourself

Here’s the straps that attach this basket to the front of the rack we also have a liner with it let’s start with with the first thing for safety and yes that’s going to be a helmet now I have a ton of helmets to choose from we’re

Going to be riding mostly solo so my wife or I will be wearing this helmet otherwise we would wear our Senna communication helmets but I picked this helmet for its safety rating as well as I really like the rear lights more visibility is always helpful and we’re

Exploring a new area so I definitely want to make sure we have additional light and paired with the basket I brought along the bungee Nets this is going to be helpful say we’re going to get some groceries we can overload this basket and overall just bungey nuts can

Come in handy in a multitude of scenarios next we have some additional lighting not sure if I’ll use it a lot but I wanted to bring them along these are great to accompany any integrated light on an electric bike because these are far brighter this is one from night

Eyes and it also has a flashing mode which can be handy as well and that light pairs well with this top peak light it also has a simple strap on the rear so it can go on a rear rack can go on a seat post and it also has some

Additional modes for increased visibility again you can never have too many lights you’re not going to want to forget this next one of course this is the charger very important especially if you’re traveling for a long time and I also put the the keys in the box and

Have a tag to tell me what bike it is to go along with the charger of course you’re going to need batteries and this is going to give away what bike we decided to bring along with us and yes it’s the electric Expedition and we have not one but two batteries that’s a

Little bit of a giveaway why we’re bringing this bike you just never have to worry about range now to pair with the battery I really like having a battery bag Shameless Plus this is one that we sell at our own shop what I really like about this yes it is

Waterproof it’s also flame resistant but in my opinion one of the nice things about having the battery bag is because it’s just safer when you put it in your vehicle because you don’t need to worry about anything coming in contact with it anything that’s metal that happens to

Come in contact with the charge port could cause issues and this is just a way to alleviate that especially with kids in the car just never know where things are going to end up this is the large size but it’s also sold in a small size and actually the small one fits a

Large majority of batteries on the market but the electric batteries fit in the large one and we’ll clip it together and there we go we’ll throw this somewhere in our vehicle and finally for security electric bike batteries are very expensive say you’re doing a long travel you want to bring those batteries

In because if someone can pop this battery out it’s going to be very very expensive to replace any electric bike battery so it’s nice to have them separated speaking of security let’s talk locks make sure to bring your lock if you don’t already have a lock here’s

A couple you might want to consider that I’m going to be testing out on our travels first we have our new uck which can be mounted to the frame or perhaps the seat post and with the UL lock it has the option of coming with this cable

Which you can attach to the front Tire just helps prevent anyone from quickly removing your front tire but perhaps the one I’m most excited about is this chain lock which means more security it’s also really long so it has a little bit more flexibility for lock up and of course

I’m biased because we’re also selling this product but it’s really affordable I’m pairing those locks with this alarm I actually haven’t installed it yet so I’m just bringing it along with me I’ll hide it somewhere on the bike and it just gives you additional piece of mind

If someone moves your electric bike it’s very loud let’s move on to some maintenance products first I have the latest generation handlebar Jacks what this is most helpful for in my opinion is if you have to change a flat because you simply attach these to your handlebars

As The Handlebar Jack name implies you strap it on flip your bike upside down and you can imagine the handlebars spanning both of the Jacks and they’re now taller so you don’t have to worry about your LCD screen on your electric bike of course electric bikes are also

Heavy so these come in very handy and they even have magnets on them to make sure they stay together and they don’t take up much room either I may have gone a little Overkill with the tools but given I’m going to have access to basically no tools and I don’t

Necessarily want to have to bother a bike shop I brought more than I think I would need first is an allen set and actually if you can believe it this is the set that ride oneup includes with their electric bikes it’s pretty good quality probably the best quality

Included tool set that I’ve seen but the main reason for choosing this one is because it has the larger sizes as you’ll see here in a second with another tool let’s move on to that we have the top peak ratchet rocket they sell a few different variations this is the one I

Prefer though it is more expensive show you what it includes of course you have the ratchet you have two all the way up to 8 mm for Allen’s or the hex keys and then you even have a Phillips as well as a T10 T15 and T25 if you’re wondering

What this is I did say this is the more expensive one this has a torque wrench with these attachments and it’s four five and six Newton M so it can be handy if you’re assembling an electric bike which I might be doing and then this set

Has the tire levers that come with it of course you can buy these separately as well but if you’re a DIY and youve planed to change your own Flats you’ll want a set of Tire levers if you already own an electric bike you might recognize

This bag this is what I used to store all of our wrenches in and I pretty much grabbed one of everything again because I just don’t know what I’m going to need these of course are ones that I’ve collected over time by assembling probably close to 100 electric bikes so

We’ve got an 8 and 10 and then we have a 13 to 15 of course I need the 15 to attach any pedals could also use a pedal wrench I also have a 14 it’s rare but I might need it a 16 to 18 and then a 17

And 19 and just to be extra safe I found this recently and it is adjustable to a bunch of different sizes and it actually came in handy removing a rear wheel so I threw it in as well next there’s definitely some deferred maintenance as it relates to the chain on our electric

Expedition so I brought some wet Lube so I can Lube up the chain and also clean it now I’m not actually particular to finish line but I know they’re well known in the industry so this should probably suit your needs and you can get it in a wet or dry lube these next

Couple might surprise you first some side Snips now you might be wondering why would you need these well if you have a hub Drive electric bike and you have to remove the rear wheel so you get a flat there’s a good chance that the motor cable is attached with zip ties to

Keep it in place there’s usually a quick disconnect back there as well so you might need to cut some zip ties in order to remove that rear wheel and of course that’s why I brought a few zip ties as well we’ve been talking a lot about Flats hopefully that doesn’t happen but

Everyone needs to bring a pump and I opted not for a manual pump this is a portable one event sells this one it was a collab that they did with fantic which obviously makes the pump now this one is quite expensive you can find cheaper ones on Amazon I will link another one

That I have experience with down in the description but what I like about this one is it has a larger battery and we use this as a power bank as well when we’re driving so we can charge up our devices so it’s really dual purpose and

Of course it’s just way easier to just turn this on you can set the PSI and then you just hit the power button and it’ll fill up your bike tires and if you’re in a pinch it can even fill your tires on your vehicle so maybe triple purpose or I guess quadruple

Purpose because it has a light at the end as well so do yourself a favor save some effort and pick yourself up a portable pump if you don’t already have one they also sell manual ones that you can attach to your frame though it does take quite a bit of effort especially

For Fat Tire electric bikes and finally my kids will be disappointed if I don’t remember their helmets as well I have a few more tricks to show you let’s go outside and load up our electric Expedition so it’s obviously cold out which is one of the reasons that we’re heading south let’s

Start off and get the bike rack all right this is the quicker stuff Mach 2 it is what I consider the best bike rack on the market it’s expensive though if you’re looking for some other options though check out our best ebike rack video as well as our blog post for the

Most up-to-date information on the bike racks that we’ve tested out for something a little bit more affordable you can go with the oneup or perhaps the sarus MHS that JT has been using what I like about this one though is it’s completely tooless so now that I’ve got

It on here all I need to do is tighten this and it’s going to expand in the receiver I always like to lift up on it a little bit make sure it’s nice and snug it also is fully lockable so if I push this button in then I’ll need the

Key to remove it great for extra security and this rack like many others on the market can be lowered or raised I’ll show that off quick it’s going lower it down out of the way or can be raised up all the way to the vehicle

All right on to my next trick I’ll need another quicker stuff accessory for this but first I’ll lift the red handle here and lift this wheel holder all the way so it’s facing the ground because I also have the ramp now what’s really cool is for storage the ramp can attach

To the end of the rack this is all modular and again tooless we won’t be bringing this down with us though because we want to limit the number of items we’re bringing down with us but we’ll use the ramp to make it easy ebikes are heavy after

All get this lined up right here sits nicely in place you also want to make sure the other wheel holder is up and now we can roll on the bike front tire first nice and easily roll it up the ramp lift the ramp out of the way and I

Already had the rack set up for this bike but that’s why I really like this rack because I’m hauling all sorts of electric bikes different wheel sizes and it being tul this has saved so much time lift the red handle lift this up into place so here’s how it looks up front

Works even with the front rack installed and there is the rear I have it placed right underneath the fender now you might be thinking to yourself Ryan that doesn’t look very safe we have a solution for that thanks to quicker stuff these are basically straps for

Downhill skis let me show you how it works works so put the strap through the rear tire here pull up on the strap get it nice and tight slide it through here now you also might be thinking I’m an RV or I go camping a lot

Or I’m going to be in a lot of unknown areas what about security we got a nice solution for that as well quicker stuff has these aluminum locks again everything on here is rust resistant and aluminum which I like being in Wisconsin there’s already salt on this rack I’ll

Have to wash it off but all I need to do slide this through and take the end and we’ll put it on here and hit the button that’s the lock and yes it is keyed the same as the rack locked to the vehicle we’ll do one in the rear and you do need

To be mindful of where the spokes are so there is a open space all right now I know my bike is secure and safe from any thieves but what about weather I’ve done a lot of reading in the Facebook groups it seems people are mixed on whether you

Should travel with the giant cover we sell some ourselves but I find it easier with a different product that we sell and that is our handlebar cover because of course what’s the most important thing to keep covered that’s going to be all the electronics like the LCD display

As well as the control buttons and this fits over very easily velcro straps so this to me is a better solution it’s not going to obstruct the lights like a full cover would and everything is covered in the cockpit now of course some of these decisions might

Depend on just how far you’re traveling another cheap solution you can use is this wrap and you can just wrap it around the handlebars you can also use plastic bags and tape if you look on eBay or Etsy or perhaps some of the Facebook groups there’s folks who 3D

Print covers for those connectors that can help keep debris and water out as well and you might also want to consider the location of the controller if it’s extra like this one you might want to put some protection around that as well other things you might want to consider

Is when a bike is on the back of your vehicle your license plate is covered up I need to pick up the attachment for quicker so I can easily move my license plate so it is easily visible and of course legal and of course additional lights always help this is one from Cody

He hooked me up and he sells all sorts of kits for a lot of the most popular bike racks on the market I’ll show you how they look I didn’t want to talk about why we brought the Expedition you can find out some of that information in our 1,000m

Update video that we just did but what I really like number one we love cargo electric bikes of course we have kids we have the two seats here it’s also a more compact cargo electric bike which means it fits very nicely on this rack and another thing I love about this bike it

May seem like a small thing are these quick release pedals so when we inevitably put another bike on this bike rack simply quick release the pedals and yes you can get it to work with the pedals attached but just getting them out of the way makes it so much easier
