Retrospec Beaumont Rev 2 Review: This BUDGET E-Bike Actually Delivers!

Retrospec Beaumont Rev 2 Review: This BUDGET E-Bike Actually Delivers!

Having your cake and eating it too that’s what we all want from a budget ebike right well the retrospect Bowmont rev 2 looks promising with its classic style and city-friendly features but can it truly live up to the promise for just $999 well take a ride with me and let’s find Out Hey there pedal Peeps and welcome to electric bike report I’m Mike East and before we jump into the details of the Bowmont rev 2 please subscribe to the channel and like this video it really does help the channel grow and it makes sure others just like you can find the

Same information that way hopefully we can help you make an informed decision about your next ebike purchase okay with that out of the way let’s get into the good stuff in a world where everything seems to be getting more expensive I’m always happy to see Brands trying to make worthwhile affordable products and

The Bowmont rev 2 here is just 1,000 bucks so first up the bike is comfortable we spend a lot of time on bikes here at EBR which means we can spot a comfy or not so comfy ride pretty quickly well I put some serious miles on

The Bowmont red to this week and from the very beginning it just felt right in the comfort Department I like these compass 27.5 in City Tires and the wide cushioned leather seat those two paired up to make for a smooth enjoyable ride that had me wanting to stay out there

For even longer but what good is comfort and price if the bike doesn’t look good I mean that’s half the battle these days a bike just needs to look good well the folks over at retrospect really went big with Style by offering six colors to pick from with the Bowmont

Right here we have the eggshell color and you can check them out for yourself at our pricing link down in the description personally check out the MATC graphite to me it looks very sweet either way no matter what your style is you can likely find a color from their

Lineup that matches your taste okay enough praising and pricing and style let me talk about a rundown of the rest of the Bowmont rev 2 specs and then we’ll dive into the real testing data the Bowmont comes with a rear hub 350 W Motor that as you’ll see later we found

To be subtle but super capable the battery is made by Samsung and is 36 volts 10.4 amp hours making a total of 360 W hours the brakes on the Bowmont are Tetro mechanical disc brakes paired to a two piston calber with 180 mm rotors now this bike does not have any

Suspension but don’t let this fool you to me this bike was really comfortable almost surprisingly comfortable between the tires and the seat I could have easily spent all day cruising but more on that later so the Bowmont only comes in one frame size that the folks over at retrospect

Says will support Riders between 5T and 5’10 but here at 511 I spent hours on the bike and like I said earlier not only did it fit me but it was definitely comfortable are you noticing a theme Here up in the cockpit you have a simplistic approach which falls in line

With the lower price point on the left you have a push throttle and a control panel with LED light bars so you can track your current battery and pedal assist levels which if I’m being honest I found to be a bit awkward to use but we’ll cover that a bit later on this

Bike also has some surprisingly nice practical perks of a city bike little touches here and there like the rear rack which holds up to 22 lbs front and rear fenders to manage those wet rides a chain guard to keep your pant leg grease free and front and rear lighting that’s

Powered with ablea batteries which we sort of wish one or both of those lights could have been powered by the bike’s battery okay with that quick overview out of the way let jum into the testing data we got on the retrospect Bowmont rev 2 and see what you can get for under

A grand in 2024 all right to give you accurate data on brakes we use a consistent approach for every bike we review we have the same Rider conduct a brake test by accelerating the bike to 20 mph applying the brakes at a predetermined line and then measuring the distance needed for

The bike to come to a complete stop and to ensure accurate results we repeat this test three times then we get an average stopping distance from the three runs with the Bowmont we got a score of 24′ 4 in that’s on the low side not dangerous but it’s still not doing as

Well as the rest of the bikes we cover that average right now is 21 ft 11 in it’s not entirely surprising cruiser bikes in general and bikes with mechanical brakes tend to do a little worse on this test if you average out the bikes we’ve tested with those criteria that average stopping distance

Is 23 ft 10 in hopefully retrospect can help the bikes move closer to the class average somehow moving forward but there are some positives these brakes are easier and less expensive to maintain in the long run and here at EBR we like and Trust the longevity of tekro also these bikes

Aren’t exactly the ones you downhill race on so if you’re just enjoying a cruise you’ll be fine overall the retrospect Bowmont rev 2’s braking performance left us satisfied it always stopped safely within our 25t threshold and we never had any issues out on the road when riding so with that let’s move

On to the speed Test now let’s head outside and see how the retrospect Bowmont rev 2 did an our speed test all right this is the retrospect Bowmont rev 2 and we’re going to do the speed test going through all five levels of pedal assist and see where the speeds top out at now I’m

Currently in third gear just kind of doing a relaxed pedal and I’m not using any pedal assist at all and my speeds are going to top out around I think 7.4 I saw there so let’s kick on pas1 and see what we get all right so I feel

It and we’re picking up just a bit and now we are at Cruising Into The Nines we might even hit 10 yeah oh 9.9 I saw that hit so let’s go to the next one pas2 and you can see that’s picked us up to about 12 oh 13 I’m going go and kick

Up the gears a little bit I’m now in fifth gear which I have a little resistance there and here we’re going to be topped out at 13.4 so let’s go to pedal ss3 and I’ve also kicked up my gears just to get some pedal resistance and here we are at 6

14.3 so let’s go to pedal assist 4 and I’m not noticing much from the pedals anymore I think we’re kind of just undergeared here a bit 181 182 and then let’s go to level five got a short Hill to get up here 18.6 18 19 oh 192 195 all right

199 20 but we’re starting to go downhill so I’m going to say 20 was kind of right on the money 19920 um for all five Pas levels um I found the gears the speeds to be really useful however once I got over about 17 mph uh the motor was definitely doing

The Lion Share of the work so there is your speed test through all five levels all right this is the throttle test on the retrospect Bowmont rev 2 just going to go from a dead stop fully accelerate the throttle and see how long it takes to get to 20 M hour on your

Mark get set go 10 13 and 20 so to recap starting off I don’t use any pedal assist and I just pedal at a casual Pace typical of riding a cruiser bike here my speed averaged around 7 to 8 mph moving up to pedal assist level 1

The bike reached 10.5 mph a slight Boost from my natural pace then I bumped it up to pas2 where I reached a speed of 13.4 mph and I found that to be a good everyday cruising speed then at Pas 3 the bike settled in at about 16.6 mph

And moving up to pas4 we saw 18.4 mph and finally at pas5 the highest level we saw a top speed of 20.9 M hour when you take a step back and look at the power graph it shows just how smooth the power distribution is across all five levels

Even at each level and switching between them the power delivery was just smooth it never felt Punchy or gave you an unsteady feeling which I thought felt great it truly embodies the laidback Cruiser theme of the bike with even power throughout all five levels of pedal assist all while still having no

Trouble at all reaching the class 2 speeds of 20 M an hour so with speed test behind us let’s see just how far you can go in the Bowmont with our range Test now I don’t know about you but when I saw the $1,000 price tag I thought we were going to see some suffering in the range Department after all it’s a 350 W Motor with a 36volt battery so to truly gauge what this bike can handle we put

It through its Paces not once but Twice first up we ride it on the lower end at pas2 where we ride until the battery completely runs dry then after a full recharge we crank it up to the highest Pas level five and go right again until

The battery finally gives out on the low test we used pas2 as it was the best combo of speed on flats and help on Hills now the folks over at retrospect claim the bike will make it up to 38 Mi surprisingly the boat covered 43.8 mi in

Pas2 totaling over 4 hours of ride time and maintaining an average speed of 10.5 mph then in pas5 the highest level we covered 17.8 Mi with an average speed of a quick 21.1 mph here’s the deal anytime a bike can live up to a Brand’s range expectations it’s a good sign and it

Doesn’t happen as often as you might expect so needless to say we were very happy with these results so overall the 350 W Motor and the relatively small 36 volt equate out to respectable mileage okay with that done let’s go to the hill Test so we’ve seen the Bowmont rev 2 handle speed and range like a champ but now it’s time for the ultimate test our grueling hellhole Hill Climb it’s a third of a mile with a punishing 12% grade definitely not for the faint of heart to to keep things fair and

Consistent we always use the same Rider Justin for our Hill test Hill tackle hell hole twice on this bike first on throttle only and then again on the highest pedal assist setting level five to see how it performs combining leg power and the motor okay we’re out a hell hole with the retrospect

Vmont and we’re going to see if this makes it up so we’re doing the throttle only it’s kind of a classic beach cruiser not a ton of power doesn’t give me a speed output um but it feels like I’m down to about 6ish five so we’ll see around this around

This turn um this walk upad is probably going to be me but we’ll see if it has enough low and torque to kind of keep it going then we will make it if not I may have to call it here let’s see oh I don’t think it’s going to make

It nope so yeah the retr Bowmont did not make it on throttle we’ll turn around and see how it does on the pedal all right back here on the retrospect bont this time on the pedal test you know the fact that it didn’t make it up on throttle doesn’t

Mean it can’t climb Hills just means you’re going to have to Pedal so we’ll see how good that does I’m going to take it pretty casual you know I’ve already shifted down to third gear um again don’t have a speedometer so I can’t necessarily give you exact numbers on

Speed but my guess was I’m going about sixish seven maybe um probably more like five or six right now I not pushing hard taking it casual just like you would if you your you know out for a stroll on a beach cruiser and so far it’s not bad um you know

Definitely climb that section we’ll let you listen this next stretch to the motor so you can hear the difference between pedaling and throttling and then we’ll see how it does on this last you know Punchy climb so the motor’s fairly quiet has a hum but I’d say average to below average um

I guess you didn’t hear it on the throttle because it did it didn’t make it but um felt about the same move a little bit louder on throttle um yeah I just shifted down to first gear and no it’s not the speed demon but

I didn’t have to put put many of my own W watts into those pedals just to just to turn it and keep it climbing um but I did start out in about sixth gear went down to first now I’m in second and so yeah as you can tell you can you

Can’t throttle up but you can’t pedal up something this steep um and I think the biggest point that I want to make sure you know is as long as you just keep a decent Cadence if you have to shift down the first gear shift down in the first

You’re going to make it up just fine um not out of breath even riding casually okay so those results were pretty much as expected on throttle alone the Bowmont couldn’t make it up hellhole but here’s the good news with pedal assist Justin made it up in 1

Minute and 54 seconds and it looked fairly easy now for some context we’ve tested a bunch of 350 W Motors and none have made it up this hill on throttle power alone Cruisers are typically built for Comfort not pure power and so these results are pretty much on par with

Similar bikes in this category if your neighborhood is seriously hilly you might want a bike designed for more hill climbing focused power a higher torque motor will make a big difference on those steep inclines but if you live somewhere with relatively flat or with maybe just a few Rolling Hills the

Bowmont rev 2 will likely handle your rides just fine it did make it up hell hole after all with a little Rider help Cruisers are about a relaxed enjoyable experience not conquering mountains so match the bike to your terrain and you’ll likely be much happier with your Choice all right and our final ride let’s take a look at how the Bowmont rev 2 rides and feels we’ll chat about the riding position the overall fit the tires and how the motor feels when pedaling then we’ll head back in here and wrap it up all right this is the

Retrospect bont rev 2 a pretty classic cruiser bike uh Dutch Cruiser Style with an upright seating position and up front here we have a nice sweat back handlebar design and it is adjustable for reach so you can go ahead and adjust it away from yourself or further towards yourself

Depending on what fits best for you and there is no suspension on this bike however being a cruiser you don’t really expect to see suspension and frankly there is a wide leather saddle on this that’s got really good cushion and springiness to it and frankly um I don’t I think it’s actually riding

Really comfortable for for having no suspension at all um down below we have Compass tires and they are sized by at 27.5 by 2.4 in and they have a semi slick kind of City pattern and nice uh retro looking Brown sidewalls to them um as far as the motor and pedaling

It and how it feels this is a Cadence Sensor Activation so when it basic Al when I start pedaling uh it sends signal to the motor and the motor just kicks on and when I stop the same thing in the opposite direction it’ll send a signal

And kick it off so you kind of get all or nothing with the motor but I do notice that in each Pas level it’s actually very smooth and subtle acceleration it’s not jumpy or Jerky like you might find on a different class of bike I think they did a good job with

The motor controller being nice and subtle through each Pas level and so although it is a Cadence Sensor it actually is tuned in a manner that is pretty consistent with a cruiser overall um generally speaking the bike is comfortable to ride it handles very well thanks to this kind of compact uh

Handlebar up front here it just makes it easy to kind of navigate and I enjoy riding it it’s a comfy bike and we’ll head back in and wrap this up so retrospect keeps things straightforward in the cockpit no fancy LCD screen here just a practical No Frills battery and

Pedal assist indicator however there’s one thing I noticed the thumb throttle sits right next to the pedal assist buttons and while this placement might seem fine at first I found myself confusing the two when trying to adjust my assist level on the Fly this meant taking my eyes off the road to double

Check my thumb placement overall it’s a minor issue and some of you might not even notice however I personally prefer a layout that feels more intuitive or natural without just moving the pedalist this controller down the bar because then it would just be too far way and I

Don’t know the right answer so I’ll leave that up to the designers but it seems like a simple fix that shouldn’t impact price if much at all and like I mentioned in the video the motor kicks in with smooth subtle power that’s actually pretty impressive it’d be a

Great option for those of you who haven’t ridden in a while and might feel a bit hesitant about the power of an ebike that low 19-in stepover height makes getting off and on a breeze and with the motor smooth power delivery it builds confidence without feeling overwhelming when it it comes to the

Seven-speed Shimano turny drivetrain it works well overall but I’d love a wider gear range at the back I found at speeds above 15 or 16 M hour my pedaling Cadence gets so fast that I’m basically ghost pedaling and not really adding power and I can’t wrap this up without

Praising the comfort factor again those 27 1/2x 2.4 in tires and that big cushy leather seat are just a fantastic combination it does a great job of soaking up the bumps and keeping the ride smooth Okay once again here at EBR we’ve covered a lot so what’s the take away from all this and more importantly would we recommend this bike for us it comes back to bang for the buck especially when you start tossing around the word budget anything sure some things can

Cost less but does it deliver what you want it to and do it well overall this is a solid bike for 1,000 bucks it has certain trade-offs but for those who want a simple and effective ride it’ll get get the job done and it’s cool to

See a lot of color choices that match your style so remember that question from the beginning can a budget ebike really give you everything with the retrospect Bowmont rev 2 you definitely can have your cake and eat it too it’s a fun capable comfortable ride that looks

Great and goes the distance all while being incredibly affordable especially in today’s pricey ebike Market all right my friends don’t forget to subscribe that’s going to be a wrap for today and we’ll see you in another ebike review W
