2024 Toyota Prius First Drive Review: The Hybrid Icon Reinvents Itself
The Toyota Prius has long been the go-to choice for eco-conscious buyers, but its quirky styling and lackluster performance meant sacrificing fashion and fun for frugality. That all changes with the redesigned 2024 Prius, which debunks the nerdy stereotype with a stylish new look and surprisingly spry acceleration.
Daring New Styling Inside and Out
The fifth-generation Prius wears an aggressive new suit of armor with crisp creases, sculpted flanks, and a sloping coupe-like roofline. Up front, the slim LED headlights flank an expansive blacked-out grille, giving the Prius a menacing mug. Muscular rear haunches and full-width taillights complete the futuristic yet handsome design. Inside, the cabin gets a modern overhaul with a 12.3-inch touchscreen, full digital gauge cluster, and an attractive two-tone color scheme.
Zestier Performance From Hybrid Powertrain
Bolting the Prius’ hybrid system to Toyota’s punchy 2.0-liter four-cylinder dramatically improves performance. With a potent 194 horsepower in front-drive models, the 2024 Prius scoots from 0-60 mph in just 7.1 seconds – over 3 seconds quicker than the outgoing car. An optional AWD system bumps output to 196 hp. Despite the newfound verve, the Prius still sips fuel with 52 mpg city and 56 mpg highway in EPA testing.
Sharper Handling, Quieter Ride
In addition to its stronger acceleration, the new Prius handles with more composure thanks to a lower center of gravity and wider track. Body motions are nicely controlled, though the steering is still light and numb on-center like most hybrids. The comfy ride is also more refined, benefitting from improved insulation to reduce noise from the gas engine.
The Prius Drives Into The Mainstream
Pricing starts at $29,045 for the base LE trim, while a fully-loaded Limited like my tester tops out around $36,000. That’s more expensive than the outgoing model, but the 2024 Prius offers far more style and tech. The sleek new shape, zippy acceleration, and premium cabin help the Prius break free from its eco-geek stigma and drive into the mainstream. With efficiency, performance, and fashion in equal measures, the Prius is finally cool.
