BMW’s CEO Says Electric Motorcycles Aren’t Ready to Compete With Gas Ones

BMW Motorrad’s new CEO, Markus Flasch, recently made headlines with his candid remarks about the current state of electric motorcycles. At the premiere of the R 20 Concept at Ville d’Este, Flasch expressed that while the Vision DC Roadster was mature in development, it couldn’t compete with gas-powered bikes like the M 1000 RR. He cited the lack of market demand and the high cost as reasons for shelving the project. With BMW covering 77% of the electric scooter market with the CE 04 and CE 02, the focus remains on where they can make the most impact. Despite the environmental benefits, Flasch argues that the technology isn’t yet ready to offer the freedom and independence that motorcyclists crave.
