Peugeot 308 SW Review: A Stylish Estate With A Few Compromises
The Peugeot 308 SW is the French automaker’s offering in the competitive compact estate segment. With stylish looks, a modern interior, and available electrified powertrains, it aims to win over buyers with its blend of fashion and pragmatism. However, it does come with a few compromises that are worth considering.
Striking Style Inside And Out
There’s no denying the 308 SW has an eye-catching design. The front end features Peugeot’s bold grille flanked by sharp headlights with fang-like LED daytime running lights. Crisp character lines run down the sides, while the rear gets 3D-effect taillights and contrasting black trim. The interior carries over the brand’s avant-garde iCockpit layout with a small steering wheel, high-mounted digital instrument cluster, and dual 10-inch displays for infotainment.
Cabin Pros And Cons
While the cockpit appears modern and upscale, material quality is hit-or-miss. And despite the many premium touches, some harder plastics remain. Finding an optimal driving position can also prove tricky due to the iCockpit’s compromised ergonomics – getting the wheel and pedals situated comfortably often means sacrificing legroom.
Space up front is adequate, but rear accommodations are tighter than many rivals. Adults will want for more knee and headroom, while installing child seats is made unnecessarily difficult by the slim door openings and buried ISOFIX anchors.
On the upside, cargo room is generous at 608 liters (21.5 cu-ft) for the gas/diesel models or 548 liters (19.4 cu-ft) on the plug-in hybrid. Loading is easy thanks to the flat floor and low liftover height.
Decent Dynamics With A Comfort Lean
The 308 SW’s steering is light for easy maneuverability around town, though you’ll have to deal with some low-speed firmness from the suspension. Things improve once up to highway velocities where the SW feels poised and comfortable on long drives. Just don’t expect much driving excitement on twisty roads as body motions are fairly pronounced.
Under the hood are 1.2-liter turbo gas, 1.5-liter diesel, or two plug-in hybrid powertrain choices. Both hybrids use a 1.6-liter gas engine and electric motor making either 177 or 222 horsepower. An estimated 42-43 miles of electric range is possible, though real-world results will likely be lower.
The Sensible Style Choice?
With sharp styling, a well-equipped cabin, and the choice of efficient electrified powertrains, the Peugeot 308 SW presents a compelling option among compact estates. Compromises like tight rear quarters, fussy ergonomics, and unremarkable driving dynamics prevent it from being a standout, but buyers prioritizing design and efficiency could still find plenty to like. Just be sure to give that iCockpit a thorough test before committing.
