Mustang or Corvair? I’m pretty big on Corvairs, so that’s what I’d go with personally, but I’m curious how many people agree. For comparisons sake, we’ll assume the mustang is an inline-six.

Corvair all day! Mustangs are too common.

Mustang by a mile. Parts are readily available dirt cheap by comparison. Everybody I know with a Corvair (like, 2 guys, haha) has two parts cars to keep it running.

Or a Falcon Sprint if you’re going to compare the two (or three).

  4. ChuckFeathers

Corvair, mustangs are dime a dozen

  5. ridinderty

Corvair all day over a boring old 289 automatic mustang ZZzzzzz

  6. RadioactiveAltoid

I like both on their own. But when I go to car shows I usually pass mustangs. I’d stop to look at a Corvair though.

Old guy here, my buddy had one in high school in the mid 70’s. We spent many hours working on it and high school level tricking it out. To the point we could pull the transaxle in under 45 minutes. Both loved and hated that thing.

2nd gen Corvair’s (like this one) have an IRS derived from Vette’s. Set up right they handled great (for the 60’s).

Came with 3 motors, 110, 140, and 180 horse. 180’s were one of the very first factory turbos.

    Cool car

Corvair Monza **Spyder** is gonna be the Girl U Want 😉

  9. Pony car all the way. This from a Corvette owner (I’ve had 3 Mustangs too in my life, 2 Corvettes). I plan to add a 69 Mach 1 to my retirement garage in due time.

The corvair is a chronically misunderstood car.

    Corvair!

Such a cool car and design. Mustangs are cool too, but you see a lot of them. I really enjoy when a Corvair rolls into a car show. You just don’t see a ton of them.

I think the Corvairs are cool as hell. If we’re talking about an I6, 64-65 Mustang, it would be a coin toss for me. I’ve heard the Corvairs are difficult to work on, and idk about sourcing parts for one, but I’m sure it’s not as easy as a Mustang. So, if you’re just looking to have something to tinker with, go with the Mustang. If you want to drive something that stands out and don’t care about the rest, go with the Corvair.

    …and LS swap that thing!

That’s a tough call. Years ago I had a ’69 Monza and friend had a ’69 Cougar. My recollection was the interior quality of the Cougar and its seating was much better than the Corvair. But the Corvair had that light, nimble, more sporty feeling than the Cougar. If you’re just cruising I’d vote for the Cougar, but if you do anything more spirited I’d vote late Corvair.

    I had a Corvair and I loved it. I think it’s a beautiful car.

Hard to beat Mustangs. The original Pony Car.

  16. Middle_of_theroadguy

I’ll take the Dodge Dart or Plymouth Barracuda.

  17. Frequent-Ruin8509

Corvair, so long as you don’t get rear ended

  18. BornWithSideburns

Corvair just bc the steering wheel

Is budget an issue? Do you have a mechanic lined up?

The corvair will be more expensive to own, and more problematic/less reliable.

That said I get why you would want one, I like oddball stuff too.

The inline six mustangs are dead simple and are super easy to work on. And usually are super reliable. And run so damn smooth. I really like ford small sixes.

Personally I would choose a mustang over a corvair unless I was getting a van or a truck.

But if you want a Corvair, and can find a nice one, and someone to work on it. That is what you should get.

  20. Confident-Simple9339

Mustang never had a van version.

Mustang, for sentimental reasons. It was the first car I took driving lessons in… wish I could have kept it, but it must have been destined for someone else.

  22. PigSlam

A restomodded Corvair Spyder could be a lot of fun.

  23. Rabbits-and-Bears

Mustang with inline 6; is take it.

  24. zoominzacks

    If it’s a 64-66 mustang 6cyl coupe vs a 2nd gen corvair coupe. I’d go corvair

  25. Possible_Win_1463

Is the corvair a spider turbo then yes

  26. Administrative-Low37

    Corvairs have always fascinated me.
But I’ve always wondered what they’re like to drive. I realize a Corvair is not a 911; nor is it a VW bug…
But I’ve always thought the handling must be somewhere in between.
If you swapped the engine and tricked out the suspension a bit, what kind of horsepower could it realistically handle ?

  27. corporaterebel

An I6 Mustang is crap and is below minimum, it’s a no go unless it is near free.

The Mustang pictured is a V8.

The Corvair is way cooler, but harder to source parts and service than the Mustang.

    Either one is great.

  28. MaxLegroom990

Corvair for the win. Especially if you find a Corsa turbo.

  29. FirehawkLS1

If the Mustang isn’t a V8 and is an I6 like you described, Corvair hands down.

  30. thechadfox

Corvair is nicer and more modern, interior isn’t much different than 70s cars, just put in headrests and stick wood grain to everything. Mustang has more soul and is the one who started the race and everyone has been playing catch up ever since.

  31. Quick_1966

Well I’m a mustang guy. I’ve had a 66’ coupe for the last 20yrs with 289 P/S, A/C, automatic. So for me mustang is the best choice especially if you want a strong aftermarket support. That being said 2nd gen Corvairs are pretty sweet looking and I would be tempted to put an LS from an impala.
