Plug-In Hybrids Overtake EV Growth But There Are Some Catches

…Source: https://insideevs.com/news/724181/phev-growth-overtakes-bevs-report/ Transcript: Per InsideEVs, plug-in hybrid sales are gaining traction, especially in Europe and China. Consumers favor them for their flexibility: they combine a gas engine with electric motors, offering 20-50 miles of electric-only range. When the battery depletes, drivers can switch to the gas engine, reducing range anxiety.

In 2023, plug-in hybrids accounted for 30% of new passenger EV sales worldwide. Europe and China led the market, with 90% of global sales. The best-selling models in Europe include the Volvo XC60 and Ford Kuga. In China, BYD dominated, with 54,300 units of the Song sold in April 2024. The Song offers a 50-mile electric range and a 671-mile combined range.

In the U.S., plug-in hybrids made up 19% of new EV sales in 2023. Stellantis leads the market with a 124% increase in sales, thanks to models like the Jeep Wrangler 4xe. Toyota’s plug-in hybrid sales grew 94% in Q1 2024, outpacing its Battery EV sales.

However, real-world usage of plug-in hybrids shows they often consume more fuel and emit more CO2 than government tests indicate. The International Council on Clean Transportation found their emissions can be two to four times higher than tested values. BNEF suggests that to maximize environmental benefits, drivers should use the electric mode more frequently.
