German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has suggested the EU and China should align their import duties on EVs at 15%, rather than the company specific approach favoured by the EU commission (up to 38%). This compromise is likely under pressure from the German car industry that wants to avoid a trade war or potential other measures against EU carmakers operating in China, the Chinese market is an incredibly important market for German carmakers.

Germany should hurt financially for all the terrible decisions it has made instead of dragging the rest of us down to cover up their mistakes.

They messed up with the other totalitarian regime with gas – Russia, they messed up with another totalitarian regime – China

Some win, some lose, Germany needs to learn its lesson and the EU needs to give them some tough love and tell them to live with it.

38% EU tariff is too low, it should be 138% at least until China agrees to tell Russia to go back to Russia and end its war crime and war of aggression against a sovereign European country – Ukraine

“Scholz’s proposal to charge a flat rate of 15 per cent import duty in both directions would cause a minor increase in the duty for vehicles manufactured in China. However, nothing would change for electric cars manufactured in Europe and sold in China: China already charges 15 per cent for car imports.”

If EU doesn’t want to de-industrialize and become completely dependent on China, they better put some trade barriers against the Chinese.

If you think surge in populists in Germany is bad right now, the voters are going to turn to real Nazis when factories in Bavaria starts closing.
