The headline here is super weird (maybe potentially misleading):

    * It isn’t the first EV with a point-to-point ADAS, nor will it be the first such vehicle in China from any OEM. It’s just the first such vehicle from Toyota. (The article is clear about this, but the headline isn’t.)
    * It (notionally) won’t be eyes-off self-driving at first, but rather a system with oversight required, similar to Tesla FSD. (Blame Tesla for blurring the lines of definition here for the general public.)

Still, it should be a pretty capable system— [here’s footage of it being tested in China. ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPNaV_PF2IA)

  2. I wonder how popular are these city capable systems in China? I guess I wonder the same here in the US. I find very little value in them other than striving to make them owrk in cities makes them that much more capable of handling highway use cases. You almost have to build a crappy city driver to have a great highway driver.

This would be a $100k+ car here in the US so I don’t see the economics of it.

I don’t particularly care about the ADAS, but it’d be nice to know about the car. What is it? Did they finally do the reasonable thing and take a Prius body, rip out the gas bits, and put in more batteries?

  4. Wonder who Toyota is buying this left over tech and parts from?
