It’s 2004, you have $23,000, and you’re looking for a new compact pickup truck. Which one would you pick?

gimme the ranger. that tacoma would be rusted out in my area by 2010

  2. phate_exe

The supercharged Frontier. In Crew Cab/Long Bed/4×4 form.

    It’s stupid. I own one.

  3. My dad had this exact choice to make IRL, and bought a 2004 Frontier in 2004. Not the decision I would have made, at all. That said, it lasted until last year, and he put over 400k on it despite taking out multiple deer along the way.

Kind of want the Baja because it’s different.

  5. Charliekeet

Some good options! I’d go Frontier or Dakota.

  6. The_Real_NaCl

Chevy S10 with the ZR2 package. I’d be happy.

  7. SkylineFTW97

Nissan Frontier. Extended cab (single cab wasn’t available at that point), VG33E, 5 speed, 4WD, manual everything else.

  8. funkthew0rld

S/C frontier, no question. Big 3 built trash, Subie is unibody and underpowered, taco would have a flat bed on it by now.

lol toyota if you want to still have it in 2024

  10. lumia920yellow

subaru baja because heavy subaru bias

  11. Piranha1993

I was not expecting a random Subaru Baja at the end of this list.

  12. BillM_MZ3SGT

I’d take the Ranger as long as it has the FX4 Off-road Level 2 package

  13. swiftie-42069

The Toyota. It’s still diving and you can sell it for damn near $20k right now.

I’ll go with the S-10 because I had one of those. It was better looking (black, with the ZQ8 sport suspension and wheels) and got better fuel mileage than my dads Tacoma.

Was actually kind of a dope truck and legitimately fun to drive with car like handling most of the time. Then occasionally, on a wet road the back end would kick out during a routine turn and it would scare the shit right out of me

Taco or Ranger & it’s not even close

  16. John_the_Piper

Considering I have a 2002 Ford Ranger Edge in the driveway that’s been a fantastic truck, I’m going to say Ranger. I love the Tacoma more but the Danger Ranger has my heart at this 0oint.

  17. BigBadBitcoiner

Had a 07 ranger. Best truck I ever owned.

  18. SQWRLLY1

Probably the Tacoma because they tend to last a hell of a long time.

  19. CurrentOk2695

Give me the S10 and bury it with me when I die.

  20. flirtylabradodo

Taco easily. The Baja is really cool but I don’t want one.

  21. whiteholewhite

Ranger>> everything else. It’s simple, works well, and reliable. You see more of them on the road than all the others

  22. PriestWithTourettes

Ford Ranger with the V-6. Look at every other one on the list. Now think about how many times you see each of them on the road these days. In my area, the Ford Ranger by a huge margin.

  23. 77dhe83893jr854

I’d take the Tacoma or the Ranger depending on price/condition and such. All things equal, I’d buy the Tacoma.

  24. Smooth-Apartment-856

Logic says get the Taco. But the Dakota can be had with a V8. And I’m a sucker for V8’s, so I’m taking that one.

  25. Rollin_Soul_O

Toss up between the Tacoma and Frontier.

  26. SgtMoose42

The Dakota. I have one with a 5.9 and it still runs great, despite my daughter’s head on with another vehicle.

  27. premierbear5

Dakota for sure. My dad owned two Dakotas back in the early 2000s and I thought about buying one myself, but I didn’t because it was rwd and my region is too snowy for rwd.

  28. charleskeyz

I live in Denver and work for a used car dealership. Tacoma hands down…. Just not one from the east coast. Tacomas sell for over book all day.

  29. Be_Oh_Aye

Considering that each of these will have me spending the cost of the vehicle in gas like 3x over, I’ll take the Toyota Tundra. It’ll be the most reliable

  30. _Globert_Munsch_

Yoter cuz I can sell it now for 30,000 lmfao

  31. RockOlaRaider

Toyota all the way. It’d still be running today. Odds are at least 75% the one pictured still is.

  32. Diligent_Fact4945

Well, my 94 Sonoma runs like a DREAM after being abandoned at one point and having almost 300k miles on it. The S10 had some updates between 94 and 04 but, based on experience alone, I’d go with the Chevy

  33. pyrotek1

1st choice the Toyota, it will run 10 more years and keep a good value. The Subaru is my 2nd choice.
