Destroyed Rocker

My 04’ ranger had a misfire this weekend in cylinder 5 and after finding it had low compression (135psi) I found this… cam doesn’t look great either but doesn’t feel as bad as it looks, I checked it’s getting oil, what the hell happened?

As a long-time valve train expert and bearing engineer, that is very serious spalling on the roller follower that appears to have had large debris get pulled in between the cam and roller. Normal spalling would have a pattern that would be evenly distributed across the roller due to wear. From your image, it’s not possible to guess where the debris came from, but I would thoroughly inspect that head to see if you can find the original failed part or where some hard material made it’s way in.

    Good luck!
