Plug-in hybrid GLC 63 is a complex, mega-fast four (Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S E-Performance 2024 review)

Mercedes-AMG’s definitive high-performance midsize SUV has returned in new-generation form … with a turbocharged four-cylinder, a 6.1kWh battery and a rear-mounted electric motor, meaning the GLC 63 S is now a plug-in hybrid slingshot.

Hinted at by its ‘E-Performance’ title, the plug-in GLC 63 sends total outputs into the stratosphere – 500kW and 1020Nm – which is enough to furiously thrust the GLC 63 from 0-100km/h in 3.5sec, or half a second faster than its twin-turbo V8 predecessor. But now that the GLC 63 is an ultra-rapid turbo-four (with 14km of EV range) rather than a thunderously powered V8 bruiser, and weighs 2300kg, will it have enough purist appeal for AMG buyers?

Chasing Cars’ Dylan Campbell gets a brief taste of the GLC 63 S E-Performance at its Queensland launch, and attempts to scratch the surface of this multi-layered, highly complex, new-generation AMG SUV.
