Australia’s first plug-in hybrid ute? GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV 2025 preview: New Ford Ranger on notice!

The 2025 GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV is shaping up as a game-changer in Australia’s mid-size ute segment. While not yet confirmed for a local launch, the Chinese dual-cab pick-up could become the first plug-in-hybrid model in its class, potentially beating the already confirmed Ford Ranger PHEV to the punch, with it not due to start sales until late next year.

Point being, the Cannon Alpha PHEV has an opportunity to exclusively attract plenty of low-emissions car buyers – and it should do with its powertrain, which combines a 2.4-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine with two electric motors to produce 300kW of power and 750Nm of torque. Better yet, its 37.1kWh battery should deliver a usable electric-only driving range alongside 3500kg of braked towing capacity.

In this news video, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Stephen Ottley gets up close and personal with the Cannon Alpha to find out if it should be a goer for Australia.
