You are middle class and this is whats for sale in your area (Albuquerque) on FB Marketplace. Your parents make good money and will pay for your insurance and gas (for now). What are you picking?

P.S: The stories are made up, though the vehicles and prices are from real listings.

    1. **2000 Dodge ram van 3500 Van:** 280k miles. Engine knocks. Probably spun bearing. Was owned by a mobile detailer but then stolen. They got it back with issues and most of their equipment replaced by garbage but decided it wasn’t worth the hassle to fix. $1800
    2. **2008 Scion XB:** 260k miles. Owned by your co-worker at Albertsons who says it runs fine. Bumper has some damage and the interior is a little dirty. $2500
    3. **2006 Honda Pilot EX-L:** Paint is a bit sun faded, leather interior is in good shape. It’s at 200k miles but the owner, your middle aged single chemistry teacher who calls their 14 cats their “children,” says the belt and water pump were just replaced. $3900
    4. **2011 BMW 7 series 740L:** 165k miles. Its never too early for your first financial mistake. Owned by a guy in his early 20s who says he’s “self employed” (he sells drugs). Currently running, but overheats some times. Some of the door panels are very loose and the passenger seat has a bunch of the foam cut out of it. $5500
    5. **2002 Chevrolet suburban 1500**: 320k miles, looks to be in decent shape overall. It’s your uncles car and he just bought a new convertible mustang after retiring. Several crushed bear cans and shriveled french fries under the seats. $4500
    6. **2002 Mitsubishi Montero sport XLS Sport Utility 4D**: 160k miles. Runs and drives well. It was owned by your next door neighbors since new. They maintained it well and took it up to the grandparents house in Salt Lake City twice a year. Their son drove it into an arroyo a couple years back, but was surprisingly able to get it back out again with nothing more than a small scratch (the parents don’t know this, but he goes to your school so you do). The leather has a few cracks and there is a grape juice stain on the back seat carpet. $3850
    7. **2014 Chevrolet spark LS Hatchback 4D**: 165k miles. Has some stains in the interior and a few accidents on the carfax. Was used for food deliveries. Cracked windshield and missing the spare tire. $4000
    8. **2011 Nissan juke S Sport Utility 4D**: 150k miles. Salvage title. Was bought new by your older cousin who sold it after she got a promotion to corporate in Dallas 6 years ago and a brand new BMW X1. Floated through a few low credit owners, got into some wrecks, was pit maneuvered at some point, and was recently repo’d. Its now at a local buy here, pay here in a bad part of town for $3600
    9. **2001 Ford f150 super cab Long Bed 4D**: 180k miles. A ranch truck for sale down south in Los Lunas. Paint is starting to fade, the bed is dinged up, has some dents and scratches on the body. Seller says there is an exhaust leak. Interior is surprisingly clean for a ranch truck. $5000
    10. **1994 Buick regal Custom**: 45k miles. This is your grandmothers car. She recently had a minor fender bender (hence the slight damage on the grill), and your parents have decided it’s time for her to stop driving. You will be driving her to her appointments and senior activities at the community center regardless, but she is willing to let you have it for $200, which you know she will give you right back 🙂 As liability for it isn’t too expensive, you might be able to convince your parents to let you have this and another car.

Scion. it’s reliable, gets decent mileage and isn’t a Chevy spark

I’m as bougie as they come, so I’d have probably bought the 740Li and been in a real bind. At least it’s not the 750i/Li with the early N63 engine, which is nothing so much as expensive Teutonic garbage.

Failing that, Uncle’s Suburban it is.

  4. Det_AndySipowicz

OK the scion is the immediate no brainer, and I owned a sonic related to the spark so I trust it, but I’m going Mitsubishi all the way. Love a Montero. Gotta have it now. Shutup and take my money

  5. Calm-Championship472

Go for the Honda,BMW,Ford F150 or Buick

  6. notagreatgamer

The Ram for the orgies – which is about the only reason I can fathom a high schooler would want that van. Better invest in curtains.

  7. thunderbird32

The Scion has the Toyota reliability, so that’s an obvious first choice. I don’t think you’d go wrong picking the Honda or Buick either, to be honest.

  8. Darisixnine

Me the montero, on another topic I knew a kid in hs with a Scion XB, he was lowkey awesome

  9. Intelligent-Hawk5863

The pilot man me and the boiz gotta get hectic

  10. HondaForever84

Is the pilot not the no brainer? 🤷🏻‍♂️

  11. Skippy_99b

I had a dodge Maxivan in high school that I tricked out myself…back in the days when vans were, you know, awesome. Captains chairs, bed in the back, keg cooler, secret places to keep my stash. I could take 15 of my closest friends out to lunch and, since the drinking age was 18, we could go back to school and still be out to lunch! I’m probably the reason kids can’t leave campus at lunchtime anymore.

  12. TonyTrucking

    Honda Pilot EX-L bro!!

Edit: Buick! For $200 and only 45k miles? She’s got a whole lotta life ahead of her and that year Buick was reliable

  13. Connect_Beginning174

    Buick NO DOUBT.

    $200 and so few miles.

Full disclosure, I inherited my grandmothers 03 Le Sabre with 64k miles as a 15 y/o car.

    This is the way.

  14. brociousferocious77

The van, because it would make a cool mobile hangout and provide a place to stay during parties and roadtrips.

  15. KCalifornia19

Let’s not forget that this decision will permanently establish your high school personality.

  16. paintedwoodpile

I wanted a custom van or large suv in high school.

  17. One_Evil_Monkey

    Buick all day long.

Hopefully it has the 3.8 but the 2.8 and 3.1 of that era were pretty solid as well.
