These were actually in service for 20 years. One later development was a gas-electric drive, like a locomotive, but instead of a diesel powering the generator, it was a 4.3 L V-6 running on natural gas. The CNG was a bit of a millstone. Compared to propane, it’s not nearly as good a motor fuel, and the high-pressure tanks are a PITA. Still, the idea of electric drive, high torque from zero, smooth power band, etc. is very attractive. Thousands of locomotives and submarines can’t all be wrong!
