It’s 1972, you have $5,000, and you’re looking for a European sport coupe. Which one would you pick?

Either Volvo P1800 or BMW 2002 Tii. Those things are tanks!

  2. Either the Opel GT or the Ford Capri.

They’re the best looking of the group.

MG BGT. It’s the prettiest, and they drive beautifully. Preferably a V8 for the extra grunt over the four pot.

  4. Poopy_McPoopings

Alfa all the way! Those cars are magnificent!

Damn hard choice. You had me at the bimmer, but then you pulled the Crappy out of the bag at the last minute.

I have grown up with Transits. Had many Escorts. So I’d stick with the cousin.

Alfa or bmw. Not only did they stand the test of time and are the most recognizable today, but are wonderful cars, with lots of racing pedigree.

Tough deciding between the Triumph and the MG. I’d probably take the Triumph but I’d be happy with the MG too

  8. Are those motors really only about $5000 in the us?

  9. Material-Indication1

I was with the 2002tii until I saw the Alfa-Romeo GTV.

the p1800 is one of the most beautiful cars I’ve ever seen

Alfa. One of the prettiest cars ever made & the twin cam sounds glorious

  12. GregBVIMB

Wow…tough choice. P180 Volvo, MGB GT, BMW and lastly the Capri.

  13. Jazzlike-Grab-1398

My mothers first car was a 73 capri and her second was a 75 2002, Ive always wanted to see them in person/ drive one.

  14. jlyonamf

Alfa, but the BMW & Capri are tied for a close second.

  15. NegotiationPrudent80

    Datsun 240Z and some change.
    Yes, I know, I know…..

  16. harrywrinkleyballs

This isn’t even a discussion. The Alpha.

The 2002 BMW is one of my favorites, but it just doesn’t compare to the Alpha Romeo GTV.

  17. Dulce_suenos

The Triumph is sexy as hell, but I’d go with that Volvo. It’s beautiful, unique, and reliable – and that’s a combo that stokes my coals.

    Opel!!! Love that rotary engine!

NOT. the number of these that friends older siblings parked within a year or two was staggering.

That Volvo is where it’s at, in white like Simon’s.

  19. Jack_Mackerel

The Opel wins for pure sexiness, and the Volvo has a good balance of suave charm and tank-like reliability, but the 2002 is more liveable than either and wins my vote.

Didn’t include a Nissan Z? I’ll take the Alfa instead.

  21. My heart says Alfa Romeo GT2000, my head says BWM2002TII

  22. SuckHerNipples

None of the above. I want a Triumph Spitfire MKIV

  23. billmr606

1972 Saab Sonett III – $3,795. For a car that weighs 1700 pounds, 75 horsepower is plenty enough, believe me.

No it is not, not even close to enough. I had one with bigger valves pistons, cams and 2bbl carb, and it still was really not enough.

  24. DeNomoloss

Tough choice. Best style+engine package for me is the Audi w/ the Rabbit engine. Yes, I have dull style.

  25. deathtongue1985

2002 but a slightly later Saab 99 EMS would be a dark horse

  26. TheMannX

I can’t fit in the Alfa, so I’m leaning BMW though the Volvo is enormously tempting. Both can live forever if properly taken care of as well, which is a nice bonus.

  27. FakeTakiInoue

In absence of the Lancia Fulvia (did they sell those on your side of the pond, and within the given budget?), it has to be the Alfa, such a perfect design and technically advanced for its time. The three Swedes are very tempting though

  28. burntbridges20

The Opel GT has always been one of the best looking cars ever made to me

  29. Hersbird

That Volvo. That’s about the only Volvo id ever buy, the only one I ever thought was a good looking car. The fact it was reliable all the better
