Respective governments need to help by not charging ridiculous ‘fuel levies’ on new EV’s to off-set what they lose in fuel tax.
That simple act would make EV’s much cheaper.

The title of the article is very confusing, the first bullet point is much clearer: “Several of Europe’s biggest carmakers unveiled low-cost electric vehicles (EVs) at the Paris Motor Show this week, seeking to jump-start a demand slump and recapture some of the market share held by Chinese brands.”

The point these European automakers keep missing is they Chinese consumers want smart car that happened to be electric, like Telsa, Nio and Zeeker. They don’t want a dumb car that happened to be electric.

I want a Van / small transporter with an electric motor, a smaller battery for city travel and a gasoline generator range extender for road trips.
I want comfortable suspension and seats.
I want no nonsense technology, real buttons and a simple cockpit. A tiny screen is enough, my phone can do everything else.

European car makers ironically asleep at the wheel. Insisted on either making expensive halo models or making electric/hybrid/combustion platforms with compromise.
Halo models worse than Teslas. Multi use platforms worse than the cheaper Kia niro.
Where’s the Skoda ID3? Fiesta EV? China/Korea filling these niches with cheaper alternatives while legacy manufacturers decide to go more upmarket rather than volume in order to profit.
The new golf is the EV3 or the MG4. The new polo/fiesta may be the Hyundai Inster. Only Stellantis seem to be trying to make cheaper (comparatively) priced EVs for volume sales.
