2022 Mazda MX-30 EV Review – The FIRST Electric Car From Mazda!

2022 Mazda MX-30 EV Review – The FIRST Electric Car From Mazda!

[Applause] [Applause] [Applause] All right what’s up guys my name is Zach and today I am driving a 20202 Mazda mx30 EV up front is a single electric motor along with a direct drive transmission now I am super excited to be driving this mx30 because this is a super special model here in the United

States this was only ever sold in California and it was only sold from 2021 until 2023 they canceled it and so we’ll talk a lot about that later on in the video but this is a super special car and being a Mazda fan I was so

Excited to get behind the wheel but huge thank you to Kennedy Mazda for letting me take out this mx30 we’re about to review here on the channel Kennedy Mazda has been absolutely wonderful to work with a family-owned company and you’ll hear more about them at the end of the

Video but please click their Link in the description below and if you would like to submit your own vehicle to have it reviewed here on the channel you can head on over to my website Zack pra.com submit it’s a quick and easy submission form it takes under a minute to fill out

And I come out to you let’s get back to that all electric drivetrain well this is Mazda’s first ever full EV now in other markets and in other areas you could buy this in three different configurations a mild High hbd a plug-in hybrid and full EV we only got the full

EV and unfortunately as of 2023 they actually canceled this car for the American market so we won’t even be getting these anymore but it makes about 143 horsepower and is front wheeel drive however again other markets got all-wheel drive we only got front-wheel drive and on a full charge it gets about

130 miles of range now that’s going to vary of course with condition weather and I’m sure on a day like today it’s going to be less than average and so that was sort of what killed these cars off or at least squashed any interest potential buyers might have had 130 Mi

On a full charge is not a lot and so this car was meant to be a city car this was meant to be driven short distances while offering that Mazda experience so take that as you will so how does it feel to drive a mx30 well it drives a lot like most

Other electric vehicles and that’s a good and bad thing it’s good because it’s very simple it’s quiet it’s smooth it’s not jerky in any type of way very comfortable I can speak at a normal volume and it’s good I really really enjoy the Driving Experience however

Mazda as a whole have always had a high focus on handling and so you don’t really get that here you don’t get that Canyon carving feel like you do from the MX5 the Mazda 3 the Mazda cx50 the Mazda CX-5 all all of Mazda’s current products

Do have some type of focus on the driving feel and this one just doesn’t however visibility is pretty good and overall for a commuter Car City Car whatever you might want to call it I think it does a really good Job with that stuff out of the way let’s talk about the interior well in front of me I have a mix of physical and digital game GES off to the left is my charge versus Power gauge this is very new for me I’ve never seen this in a Mazda and

Basically works as your tachometer of how efficiently you’re driving in the center we do get our digital screen we can swap this around with some info like most other mazas and I love that they sort of keep that throughout this vehicle as well and off to the right we

Have our battery charge and temperature which is interesting seeing a battery temperature gauge in an EV the steering wheel is a very basic modda unit pulled directly out of the Mazda 3 and other products as such so off to the left we have our volume and Skip Track as well

As our phone options and info and off to the right we have our adaptive cruise settings love that this vehicle retains that feature off to the left we do have a climate control vent our safety features off our view button so we do have a 360 camera love to see that on

This vehicle parking sensors off traction control off and then we have two levels of memory seats very very nice to see see moving out of the door we do have a Bose speaker lock and unlock power mirrors power folding mirrors and power windows again very nice features for a modern Mazda product

Moving into the center we do have our infotainment system this is very run-of-the-mill same thing you’ll find in every other Mazda Apple carplay and Android auto are available and it is powered through that Bose system and this is what the backup camera looks like in case you’re curious moving down

Below we have two climate control vents in the hazard switch and then we have our climate controls which is a screen I have never seen this in a Mazda product no current Mazda products at least to my knowledge in the American Market have a screen dedicated for the climate

Controls so this was very interesting unique and different I assume this was to save money and since this was a multimarket vehicle maybe so they didn’t have to label it in Celsius or I I I don’t know what the reason is but very very cool to see that we do have heated

Seats and a heated steering wheel and this is just how it operates we do have settings down below we can change the visuals of it touchscreen volume and such like that so this is all very very new as someone who has driven every Mazda made recently this is very unique

To see something like this and I enjoy playing with it down below the center console we do get more cork as well as a wall outlet and two USB A’s for the infotainment and for charging then we do have the shifter the shifter is mostly different from a lot of the other mazas

However this style shifter is starting to be adapted into the Mazda SE cx90 their new three row vehicle that was debuted in 2023 and I like it once you know how to use it you know Park you have to go over and then back and things like that it’s pretty simple from here

On out then we do have our very standard switch gear from Mazda for the infotainment system parking brake and break hold off to left volume and Skip track off to the right I love that you can move the volume knob over to skip the track I think all cars should do

This but not all do then the big selector in the center navigation to the upper left back to the bottom left music to the upper right and home to the lower right then we do have cup holders so we will do a big freaking bottle test here

In the Mazda mx30 and unfortunately it fails however this is the closest a modern Mazda product has ever come to actually passing the big freaking bottle test so although it doesn’t pass it has a very very good shot at it a better shot than most of its

Siblings then we do get a center console which is really interesting because it has these front flaps that you can fold out to sort of go over the cup holders and extend the center console I’m not totally sure the reasoning for this if you have a oversized object in your

Center console or if you just want to delete the cup holders not totally sure why if you have a guess as to why Mazda would do this please let me know but it’s very cool and very unique and something I definitely haven’t seen in a car before the seats are comfortable

They are this very interesting cloth material mixed with leather and I think they are offer a nice and luxurious experience for the caliber of C this is this isn’t a Rolls-Royce but that doesn’t mean I can’t be comfy and so Mazda thought of that when building this

Vehicle however speaking of seats we do have back seats and an interesting way to get back there so let’s go do a back seat review all right so when talking about the mx30 you got to talk about the rear doors to get into the back so

Normal door opens up just like that but then we have this handle here and we pull this open and it has almost most identical doors to the Mazda RX8 that was canceled in 2012 so the mx30 Carries On or did carry on when they sold them

Here the legacy of the RX8 with these doors so very cool getting back here um I’ll show you first I got a I got a drop on the lens not very spacious but we’re going to try it out all right so I can let’s see nope all right so I

Actually have buttons on the back of the seat right in the middle to move that seat up love to see that once we are back here let’s put this back to where it was not a lot of space could I do it could I fit back here actually with the

Seat like this I actually fit my head’s coming close to the ceiling but I could make it work it’s not spacious it’s not comfortable I’m not loving it however it has back seats it’s a small City car with back seats if you have kids it’s

Going to be fine I’m 5’11 and not a small small guy as you can see so the fact that I fit back here at all is is quite wonderful but I’m not going to sugar coat it it’s not a great Back Seat but that’s not really what they were

Going for I don’t really have any other amenities I have fold down cup holders in the center console no rear climate vents Mazda is very reluctant to give you rear climate vents but I love love love that this power seat option right here is just right in the center this is

So smart and more companies should do this because it’s always it’s down here it’s a latch it’s a handle it’s this it’s that just right here I love that let’s hop out we’ll take a quick look at the trunk and cargo space and then we’ll talk about the looks

Right around the back of the mx30 and we don’t have a power tailgate so you just lift it up like normal and here is the rear cargo space obviously these are floor mats cuz this is a used vehicle we want to keep them nice for the next

Owner but the space back here I would say is very on par with the Mazda 3 and this car was priced relatively similarly to the Mazda 3 with of course a little bit of an added search charge because it is is an electric vehicle batteries are expensive blah blah blah but for the

Size definitely the Mazda 3 back seat is better but this rear trunk space is fantastic for this caliber of car and if you lower these seats which you can put down the second row you’re going to have a lot of cargo space If This Were My Car

I’d probably leave the rear seats down and just enjoy tons and tons of room back here we also do have the E Sky Active bag which in here is the wall charger so we could open this up and that is the wall charger from Mazda to

Plug in at home or plug in on the go if you can find an open Outlet out in public or maybe steal some juice from your neighbor and uncle whatever it is so that is the rear cargo space of the Mazda mx30 now we got to talk about the

Looks and I love the look of the Mazda mx30 because we don’t get them this is my first time actually seeing one in person again we are thousands and thousands of miles away here in Indiana from where this vehicle was sold new these were only sold in California which

Which is more than a day drive away so just seeing one is such a visceral experience that gets me super excited because well we just didn’t get these at all however I do think it is styled in a pretty interesting way I think it’s eye-catching and definitely fits in with

Mazda’s lineup it’s a shame that we didn’t get them here however with all of that being said let’s get on to my final thoughts what do I think driving a Mazda mx30 well well first of all I mean it’s just incredibly cool to be driving one

Of these I mean how could it not be this is such a special such a unique Car especially for a midwesterner to be driving something like this I mean this is like the forbidden fruit of the Mazda lineup I mean that that’s freaking cool

But let’s talk about it as a car I think this car got a lot of negative press in its day and some of it has been warranted and some of it hasn’t been let’s talk about range 130 Mi not not good and I think it would have been

Better off if this was priced a little bit lower all the way specked out in 2022 these would run high 30s if you’re paying high 30s you should get some pretty good range out of that the Nissan Leaf would do well into the 200s the Hyundai Kona EV would do a similar

Number and that one was around $4,000 so I think that turned a lot of people away pretty immediately which which is a shame because I think this card does a couple of things really really well first of all the interior feels like a Mazda which I’ve always

Loved I personally own a 2019 Mazda 3 and so this feels at home this feels wonderful the materials in here are solid and although there are some new materials that I haven’t seen in azda before like this interesting cork down below it doesn’t feel like a flash in

The pan it doesn’t feel like it’s trying to be this cool text Savvy nope buttons minimalist vehicle it doesn’t drive or feel like that it still has that Mazda heart on the inside are the back seats spacious no but it has them I think where this car failed in the New Market

It will really succeed in the used Market because they’re quirky and weird because no one knows really what they are I think EV enthusiasts are going to enjoy that because EVS are pretty normal now it used to be weird to drive an electric car but now it’s not so you got

To find ways to make it interesting you got to find ways to make it unique and the mx30 is certainly one of those cars and an easy way to do that so why did these cars fail well they weren’t really given much of a chance to start off with

I think if a lot of people had an extended amount of time to try them out and learn about them I think the overall opinion would change and I think it would change for the better however speaking of these on the used Market you can buy this car from Kennedy m Mazda

Here in val preo Indiana Kennedy Mazda is a family-owned Mazda dealer they’ve been that way for years and years and years and they are one of the most down-to-earth homegrown dealerships I’ve ever worked with their communication has been topnotch to the point where I emailed them about this car and I was
