Following BMW’s takeover of rival Glas (better known for its Goggomobil marque), it wanted to transition away from the eyesore that was the existing, rebadged [BMW-Glas 3000 V8 coupe](https://res.cloudinary.com/mecum/image/upload/v1669823128/auctions/ca22/ca0822-530604/2036958_1.jpg). Italian design house Frua was commissioned to design and wrap a new fastback body with BMW styling around a running 3000 V8 chassis. BMW decided to abandon the development and kill off Glas and Goggomobil to focus on its ongoing E9 development.
