There will never be another car like the VW Beetle. Small, compact, mass-produced, fuel efficient, and owned by everyone and their brother (1960 Model)

Does that not describe the Toyota Prius pretty well?

I’ve thought that about the Toyota Prius also. A better choice would be the Toyota Corolla. Best selling car in the world.

Not only that but the parts are interchangeable throughout thr decades.

I own a Morris Minor not quite as successful globally as the Beetle but definitely the British Beetle including size etc. Of course there’s also the mini but it’s lot smaller.

Bought an old Beetle convertible back in 1985. Still have it. It’s funny to pull up to a light and younger drivers ask “what kind of car is it?”

My girlfriend in the 1980s had an old one. She had a window scraper in the inside for the frost.

Circa 1962. My cousin had just bought one and was out showing it off to various family members. I was just a toddler.
I got a little too close to one of the tailpipes and burnt the hell out of my leg. And that was my introduction to the VW Beetle. 🙂

They are by no means fuel efficient.

The true advantage was that the car was serviceable by the owner without expensive tools and equipment. Who doesnt miss that today?

The thing about the beetle is Bill Gates could drive one, and his gardener could. And neither of these things would be even remotely remarkable.
It was the universal reliable little car. Arguably the Corolla or Prius equivalent. Completely free from any presumption of class or social status.
And on top of that, just so much fun to drive as long as you are not in a hurry.

Almost bought a 1970 yellow bug for my first car for $500, but my Dad talked me out of it. It was raining, and the windows were fogging up on our test drive and my Dad didn’t want me to deal with “one more thing” while learning. Damnit!
