There’s a lot of hype surrounding the Chinese-built BYD Shark 6 ute – and a lot of pressure riding on how the public and the press respond to the crucial new hybrid pick-up truck.
Well, at long last we’ve finally had a chance to drive the plug-in hybrid petrol-electric ute in China and inspect it inside and out, and the news is generally positive.
Following a year of development and testing in Australia across a range of on and off-road scenarios, it turns out the hybrid ute is fairly capable on the rough stuff and although it’s not as refined on the road as some of its rivals, it’s certainly not a disappointment.
Bristling with technology and able to run up to 6kW of power tools or appliances from three powerpoints in the tray and one inside the vehicle, it looks set to give the Ford Ranger PHEV a run for its money – especially given the BYD will be a significantly more affordable dual-cab ute.
It’s true that ute buyers are often loyal, but just as Tesla saw a change in loyalties the sedan and SUV segments, perhaps the 2025 BYD Shark 6 will shake things up in the pick-up truck world?
