Electric Vehicles

1973 repeat, but with EVs instead of fuel efficiency

[https://www.nytimes.com/1973/03/20/archives/honda-develops-emission-system-says-it-would-meet-auto-pollution.html](https://www.nytimes.com/1973/03/20/archives/honda-develops-emission-system-says-it-would-meet-auto-pollution.html)

I came across this article and imma list 2 excerpts which almost perfectly sum up the big 3s current stance on EVs and how they arent good and don’t sell

>In testimony last week, officials of General Motors, Ford and Chrysler, while urging suspension on the ground that they could not meet the 1975 standards,

>Today the Honda representatives said two Chevrolet Vegas that had been fitted with their system had met the 1975 standards. Although 50,000‐mile durability tests have not yet been conducted on these Vegas, the officials expressed confidence in the durability of the system.

Given that almost every automotive regulation we currently have has been written at least in part with the intent of protecting the big 3 from ever having to truly compete with Toyota.

Personally, I think the Japanese are working on solid state batteries and just don’t want to say anything until the tech is ready, tried and tested as is their business model while the big 2.5 are hard at work complaining about how no one wants ~~their not great and overpriced~~ EVs

Toyota has been putting out press releases about working on solid state for over two decades now.

    Oh look a new one

    [2024 Sept ETA starting 2026 ](https://global.toyota/en/newsroom/corporate/41100223.html)

From other plans it sounds like they plan on making small packs for PHEV hybrids first not BEVs

I liked the old article reference.

You need to let go of the solid state battery thing, it’s just a red herring.

While battery prices coming down is a major cost factor, regardless of their chemistry, the belief that the old guard is suddenly going to jump in and catch up is unrealistic. It’s not the cars per se that are important, it’s the manufacturing facilities and design architecture, it’s the machines that build the cars that are most important, that’s what makes profitable scale possible.

  3. This is more nonsense. I think this author is writing garbage in bad faith for clicks or something.
