I remember all of us saying when these companies all announced this sort of thing that they would all push the date back as time came closer. Here we are.

Volvo was really counting on North America for some growth and kind of just got screwed over on a bunch of fronts. Both the EX30 and EX90 should have been on sale in notable numbers in our market by now.

Volvo also has a serious pricing problem with the XC40 / C40 / EX40 / EC40 in North America which really makes those cars uncompetitive. The EX90 honestly isn’t too bad when compared to the Tesla Model X, but the EX40 is a worse value than even the Audi Q4 e-Tron (which itself isn’t a particularly great value). You don’t even get adaptive cruise control on lower trims. They don’t need to be pulled down to the mainstream, but they do need to be more “premium” to match their pricing.

I went to their website. I’m in the US, and the only Volvo fully electric car I could buy right now is a XC40 Recharge. It looks perfectly nice, but it’s over $60k for a compact crossover with 250 mile range and if I’m not mistaken, built on an ICE platform. That’s a lot of compromises if I’m willing to consider other options. I understand the tariff thing isn’t their fault exactly, but you can’t complain about low demand if you’re not offering much of anything for sale.

What is Volvo’s best-selling ICE model? The XC60, which sells twice as many units as the XC90. What’s the first next-gen model they’re sending to the US? The EX90, which is designed to be yet another low-volume, premium, three-row SUV. That’s fine, I guess. But if most of the newer EVs on the market are going to be upscale three-row SUVs, low demand is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

    >> because we see that even though we’re fully ready to do it, the market’s not really with us.”

Release only expensive SUVs. Don’t release affordable ex30 or whatever is called. Bad software. People aren’t buying EVs. Shocked Pikachu face.jpg

The EX90 is about 1-2 years delayed, and the interior is nowhere near as nice as their existing XC90 (I own a 2017 XC90). They just showed a mildly refreshed XC90 where they improved its interior even more. The EX90 should have that interior instead of what it has. For the price, the EX90 should be nicer, not worse.

  6. I really like the EX30, but the pricing is whack, and the range is kinda meh.
